England inflict a series whitewash on South Africa after a comfortable 9 wicket win in the 3rd T20I
A win in the third T20I against South Africa would catapult England to the No.1 spot alongside Australia in the MRF Tyres ICC Men's T20I Team Rankings.
Overview
South Africa vs England, 3rd T20I
Newlands, Cape Town
Tuesday, 1 December, 06:00pm local time, 04:00pm GMT
England, who are currently ranked No.2, are just one rating point behind Australia.
With victory in the second T20I at Paarl, the visitors bagged the series win against South Africa with a game to spare. The latest success means that the Eoin Morgan-led outfit have further extended their undefeated run in T20I series, which began in October 2018.
One of the chief factors for their streak – which includes victories over West Indies, New Zealand and Australia – has been their ability to close out games from various challenging positions.
In the second T20I, they were faced with somewhat tricky situations in a relatively modest chase, but where it was Jonny Bairstow's explosive ability that won them the first game, Dawid Malan called upon his more measured approach to help ride the tide in the next.
South Africa will take heart from the fact that they have challenged England in both games so far, but will be aware that to take down the visitors in the final game they will need to serve up a more complete team performance.
With the series closed out, England may consider testing their bench strength in the final game. The likes of Moeen Ali, Mark Wood and Sam Billings could get a look in.
Remember the last time
Adil Rashid headlined a clinical bowling performance by the visitors in the second game, picking up 2/23, to relp restrict South Africa to 146/6. The hosts began their innings well but began losing momentum after skipper Quinton de Kock was dismissed for an 18-ball 30, which was their highest score of the match.
England looked to pace themselves on a pitch that made scoring a touch difficult. They looked to then unleash against spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, but the bowler cashed in on the attacking intent by picking up three key wickets. At 83/4, England appeared to be in a spot of bother, but Malan made a 40-ball 55 to help see his side over the line. Eoin Morgan closed things out with a 17-ball 26*.
What they said:
Dawid Malan (England batsman): "If we can get a bit of momentum going, and keep on winning series and these types of tight games, that will put this squad in good stead for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup."
Quinton de Kock (South Africa captain): "The group are learning. Every game is different, every stadium has a different feel. We need to start learning fast."

Hopefully South Africa can win the dead rubber today. England might rest a few players so that should increase their chances.
It is not acceptable for any team to get whitewashed at home, especially a team like South Africa which should be among the top sides in a few years.

de Kock is a brilliant batsman in all formats but doesn't get the due credit or hype.

England and Australia seem the strongest in terms of contenders for the World T20. Wouldn't rule out West Indies and India due to it being in India.
But if Australia and England can adapt to conditions quickly I would expect 1 of those 2 to win the tournament.

De Kock is overrated to be honest, the guy failed miserably during world cup. He doesn't have the jazba junoon like Smith

I think Van Der Dussen should be made captain, De Kock looks nervous all the time. He reminds me of Haba

It's important to me that England complete the clean sweep rather than take their feet off the gas.

Van Der Dussen showing he can accelerate . Faf at 3 and Van Der Dussen at 4 should be the way South Africa go.

Faf
Van Der Dussen
Miller
That is a decent middle order. South Africa need Bavuma to fire or replace him with someone else to partner De Kock and they have a decent batting line up for the T20 WC.

De Kock captaincy has been mixed in this series so far. Should have kept Linde on for another over.

Watch the No.1 T20 batsman in the world bat.
Very good shots by David Malan
-
2nd December 2020, 00:04 #33
I would still like to see Root involved in T20s but with Malan performing like this, you can't really see him getting back into the T20 team.
-

Linde looks a good find for South Africa. Gives them another option in terms of spin for the World T20.

De Kock not going to the bowler and trying to help him. Maybe needs to give up the gloves so he can stay in closer contact to the bowler during these situations. Interested to see what SA do. Klassen can keep and Kyle Verreynne is another keeping option.

Woakes should replace Tom Curran and Wood should replace Jordan. That would strengthen England's bowling and that would make them very very difficult to stop for the next 2 T20 wCs. May need to develop a 2nd spinner for the World T20 in India.
-
2nd December 2020, 00:27 #44
Sipamla and Shamsi losing this for SA.

Shamsi is gabage

South African batters did well today and in the 1st game , in the 2nd game their bowlers did well. They need to find a way to join a performance together to get more wins. But tbh England are just a much better team and they would have beaten most teams with the way they performed in this series.
-
2nd December 2020, 00:42 #49
Malan has outscored Buttler comfortabley in a similar amount of balls. Amazing stuff.

Malan doesn't have Buttlers ability yet he is able to accelerate yet our fans think it acceptable for Babar to bat at once pace.
The top LO players are able to accelerate. Babar is clearly our best player. He really needs to improve in this aspect.
-
2nd December 2020, 00:50 #52
I'm sure I read somewhere he made himself unavailable for this series.
I think South Africa see Andile Phehlukwayo and Dwaine Pretorius as their LO all rounders. Both were injured for this series so I think they will be back for the next series.
I would definitely get Chris Morris involved but it is upto South Africa and Morris to come up with a solution.

What a chase by England.

Right now I can only see Australia stopping England in the T20 WC. What a team and what an era of white ball cricket England are having.

If Pak would have lost like this, critics would have bashed the team and everything related like no tmw.

That was painful to watch. England is my second favorite team but this cannot be good for the South African youngsters.
South Africa have all the qualities to be the 4th best team in the world alongside NZ very soon.
QdK needs to be more animated and active in the field. His body language was very negative.

Got something to say tag me in it. Don't do sly digs.
Pakistan haven't won ODI series against a top team since 2013. Such a high quality team. That's our level. South Africa have a long way to go before they get to that level.
Would rather say my honest than just be positive for the sake of it.

Why did you make a sly dig at me?
I'm bringing Pakistan into it because they are in even bigger trouble than South Africa so think about that before taking digs at me and predicting the demise of South African cricket.
Look at Pakistan bilateral LO record against England. If losing to England means your finished, Pakistan cricket finished a long time ago by your logic.
-
2nd December 2020, 01:38 #76
Our fans mock other teams but they don't even realise how bad we are. They are doing banghra over Australia beating India but some posters are on here were predicting the demise of Australian cricket, some even said they wouldn't qualify for the semis of WC last year.
-
2nd December 2020, 01:43 #77
Yep that was ridiculous that people thought Aus cricket was done. I knew as soon as Smith and Warner were back, they'd be back in full flow. Losing 2 top and experienced players all of a sudden will plummet any team mentally for a period of time. Sadly even someone sensible like Mamoon was thinking Aus wouldn't perform in WC.

Because your claim is being proven wrong before our eyes, unless of course being whitewashed is being a force. People replied to your thread by saying they were a mid tier team but you insisted that they weren't.
(Almost) Everybody accepts we're not a top team, but when someone says neither is South Africa, you get mad
Pakistan drew 1-0 in tests in England and drew T20s 1-1, yet we're talked about like minnows. South Africa loses 3-1 in tests at home and now gets whitewashed in T20Is yet "South Africa will remain a force".
Again, as I said, we'll have a clearer picture in 5 months time. 2 tests and 3 T20Is in Pakistan in January. Then 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is in South Africa in April.
-
2nd December 2020, 01:55 #80
So I'm wrong after 1 series ? So by that logic when South Africa beat Australia they are definitely a force.
I don't get mad when someone says South Africa are not a top team. I get mad when people say South African cricket is finished which is not the case.
And when I said they would be a force, what I meant was the would beat the lower teams and challenge the big 3. Maybe beat them in some series. It won't happen after 1 week of me making that thread. It will take time. But eventually South Africa will return to being a top team . A situation which is unlikely with Pakistan.
Pakistan could have easily lost that test series 2-0 if it wasn't for rain in the last game and England didn't play their full strength team against us in the T20s. They played their full strength team against South Africa. That is why there is no need to say South African cricket is finished when they are losing to the best team in the world in LO.
