Sky Sports, Willow TV, Flow Sports, & Sky NZ join SuperSport to show Pak cricket and PSL (2021-23)
• Willow TV, Flow Sports, Sky Sports and Sky NZ join SuperSport to showcase Pakistan international cricket and HBL Pakistan Super League till 2023
• PCB to produce cricket in High Definition with other latest broadcast specifications and tools
Lahore, 21 January 2021:
Resumption of cricket in Pakistan has attracted household sport broadcasters across the globe to partner with the Pakistan Cricket Board and secure media rights for the HBL Pakistan Super League and all home bilateral international matches till 2023.
After premier sport networks PTV Sports and SuperSport had acquired Pakistan and Africa region’s media rights for Pakistan cricket, respectively last year, the PCB has now signed partnerships in North America, the Caribbean, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
As such, fans and supporters of Pakistan cricket will now be able to follow Babar Azam and his side as well as the HBL Pakistan Super League in North America though Willow TV, in the Caribbean through Flow Sports, in the United Kingdom through Sky Sports and in New Zealand through Sky NZ.
Discussions with potential broadcasters in Australia, Middle East and South Asia are underway and further details will be provided in due course.
The PCB had worked in close collaboration with its international media rights consultant Colgan Bauer and carried out a stringent analysis of each market. This included devising rights packaging and processes to enhance competition and quality broadcasters from all markets.
Until the end of 2022, Pakistan has lined-up a series of mouth-watering international cricket and topped up with the HBL Pakistan Super League 2021, 2022 and 2023, fans can brace to experience the most exciting and thrilling cricket to be participated in by some of the modern day elite cricketers.
Pakistan’s upcoming home bilateral cricket includes:
• 2021 – vs South Africa (Tests & T20Is), New Zealand (white-ball), England (men’s and women’s T20Is) and the West Indies (white-ball)
• 2022 – Australia (full tour), England (Tests & ODIs) and New Zealand (Tests & ODIs)
• 2023 – FTP to be confirmed
PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan: “Despite the challenging Covid-19 times, these remain incredibly exciting times for Pakistan cricket. The homecoming of all cricket has attracted leading sport broadcast partners to place Pakistan cricket on their networks which, in turn, will provide enhanced access to our fans and supporters across the world to follow and stay connected with us.
“This is a huge achievement for the PCB, not only in terms of succeeding in taking cricket to our global fans through these popular networks but to also maximise and exploit our media rights to ensure we continue to invest in our player welfare and development as well as cricketing infrastructure.
“It has been a calculated and strategic approach by the PCB and it revolved around bringing cricket back to Pakistan before we aggressively exploit our media rights programme. Till the HBL Pakistan Super League 2023, the world’s most attractive and leading international cricketers will be playing cricket in Pakistan and this is too tempting an opportunity for any top broadcaster to miss out on.
“The interest of these global sport networks also reflects that Pakistan cricket remains an attractive product for the international broadcasters. We now need to make our product bigger and stronger so that we can extend these partnerships and relationship beyond 2023.”
Sky Sports Director of Cricket, Bryan Henderson said: “We’re delighted to add Pakistan cricket to our portfolio starting with the visit of South Africa later this month, followed by the excellent HBL Pakistan Super League T20 tournament. Later in the year England’s men and women’s teams will play in Karachi – we can’t wait.
“This announcement is a fantastic way to begin 2021 for Sky Sports as we look forward to a thrilling domestic summer of cricket which includes The Hundred for the very first time in addition to the visit of Pakistan in a busy international calendar for England.”
Sky NZ chief executive Sophie Moloney: “We are delighted to add international PCB matches to our fantastic cricket line-up on Sky Sport. Our customers value the very best sporting content, and it’s our pleasure to be able to secure this for 2021 and beyond.”
Willow TV SVP Operations, Todd Myers: “Willow TV's goal is to serve cricket fans in the US and Canada with the best cricket from around the globe.
“Our continued relationship with the Pakistan Cricket Board and the HBL Pakistan Super League allows us to do just that by showcasing PCB's world-class players and competitions exclusively across all of Willow TV's platforms.”
Director, Entertainment Networks & Media Ops, Michael Look Tong: “Flow Sports is absolutely pleased to partner with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to distribute their home series and HBL Pakistan Super League T20 in the Caribbean. Pakistan has a long cricket history in the region and has gained many fans over the decades.
“Several years ago we introduced the HBL Pakistan Super League T20 which enabled us to showcase many Caribbean players including Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo and Carlos Braithwaite, to the delight of our customers.
“We’re excited that the PCB is now part of our international cricket portfolio - the largest in the Caribbean.Last edited by MenInG; 21st January 2021 at 13:22.

With the pandemic around, this is awesome news for all cricket fans.
Finally we get guranteed HD cricket 🏏.
Top marks to PCB for this, hopefully we can get good pre + post ceremonies from Sky like they do for England home series etc.
Think a lot of credit has to go to presenters like Zainab, Fakhar-e-Alam and Wasim for bringing us closer to the English audience. Put in Bazid and Rameez and it doesn’t look or sound a word away from world class.

Don't want sky would have preferred bt sport
Reason being with now tv stream , sky has a habit of sticking games you want to watch on red button , and you can't use red button services with now tv sports package , so you have to subscribe to proper box package with 24 month contract to use the red button service.
So example if England were playing sri lanka and pakistan were playing South africa, sky would put the England fixture on sky cricket and the pakistan vs south africa would be relegated to the red button service. So for now tv subscribers they won't able to watch

The PCB was offered $150 million by Ten Sports for 5 years, the only ended up with $60 million because India refused to tour Pakistan or play Pakistan in the UAE.
My question is that the deals that EM, WK have negotiated with these broadcasters and are negotiating further with other broadcasters, are they going to bring the PCB more than $150 million especially considering we are not playing against India anytime soon? Surely the PCB PTV deal which the PCB projects will help them earn $200 million in the next 3 years would have strengthened PCB's negotiating powers with all of these external international broadcasters.
Anyways if the likes of EM, WK have managed to bring a total of $150 million plus from all of the these broadcasters combined especially considering we aren't hosting India anytime soon, then their achievement will be truly remarkable.
-
22nd January 2021, 04:58 #32
If EM, WK have ended up bring tremendous broadcast revenue to the PCB overall in a Covid world, where we aren't hosting India and the fact that our Cricket team is ranked in the bottom tier in all formats, then you just have to take your hat off to them.

I asked WK on how much revenue the PCB is actually getting from these deals. I don't want to disclose the platform but i will give you his response
We signed a 3 year $200 million "local" broadcast deal with PTV in September 2020. Our international broadcast rights figure under confidentiality agreements. The PTV deal gives you an idea of the level!. Our previous deal was worth $50 million in total

Lol Ehsan Mani comes across as a lethargic, old fashioned, slow decision making individual especially because he doesn't come on the media every day and doesn't give sensationalist interviews, statements, masala comments frequently but the man is very smart. He was on the ICC finance committee and he was the ex ICC chairman. He knows how money in cricket is generated and multiplied. WK to his credit didn't even take credit for the PTV deal and instead credited Ehsan Mani's vision and work behind the scenes

Has anyone got any figures of how much these deals are worth ?
-
23rd January 2021, 02:14 #50
PCB wont release the numbers because the agreements have confidentiality clauses. But based on my brief convo with WK, he hinted that the PCB got $50 million last time from 2015-2020 and they are projected to make $200 million in 3 years from the PTV deal which covers the right for PTV to air Pakistan's domestic cricket, home series in Pakistan alone and therefore you can comfortably rest assured that the PCB will be doing its utmost to get a much better deal than last time. Ten Sports who offered the PCB $150 million from 2015-2020 but ended up only paying $50 million because India went back on its tour to Pakistan, apparently this time offered the PCB $25 million for the next 3-4 years and the PCB told them to move on.
It makes sense too. If an international broadcaster tries to low ball the PCB with a poor offer, the PCB can easily pressurize and negotiate with a stronger bargaining power for more money citing the $200 million deal.
-
23rd January 2021, 03:27 #51
This is some good stuff but let’s not over celebrate this. Most important thing is to have a system where are producing quality international cricketers. That’s what we need to be concentrating on. This stuff should be done with minimal fuss like how it has been done.

Apparently according to WK, the PCB is negotiating deals with broadcasters in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Middle East, Australia seperately. If no reasonable deal is found then the PCB will go for open streaming services available in the respective countries as well.
The PCB will retain sole control of the entire production and will only provide a feed to the broadcaster.

Whatever the figures are there is no reason for domestic cricketers not be earning 10 times more then they currently are
And for Pakistan test cricketers should all be making a minimum of $50,000 a year
-
23rd January 2021, 13:34 #56
I was just looking at the countries where the BCCI has sold the IPL rights too, the PCB should also look to target the following broadcasters in the remaining countries
Afghanistan (Lemar TV, Ariana, RTA TV)
Australia (Network Ten, One HD, Fox Cricket)
Bangladesh (Maasranga, Channel 9)
Bhutan (Sony Sports Network, Star Sports Network)
Brunei (Astro)
Canada (Rogers Media (Sportsnet World, Sportsnet One, Omni Television, Ethnic Channels Group, CricketGateway)
Hong Kong (PCCW)
India (Sony Sports Network, Star Sports Network)
Malaysia (Astro)
Arab world (OSN Sports, BeIN Sports)
Nepal (Sony Sports Network, Star Sports Network)
Singapore (StarHub, Singtel, YuppTV)
Sri Lanka (Sony Sports Network, Star Sports Network)
Worldwide Digital Rights (Times Internet, Disney+ Hotstar)

Would prefer BT but as someone in the UK this is still fantastic compared to god awful coverage or none at all.
I missed out on the deal a week ago to get the NOW TV pass for 25 quidended up paying 34 quid which is still a bit too pricey
-
23rd January 2021, 15:33 #58
Well this should be able to pay domestic cricket costs, and ensure departmental cricket never comes back.
-
23rd January 2021, 16:17 #59
Not disclosing the details is making all these deals fishy. NAB should closely monitor Mani's & WK's bank accounts & assets.

I think I mentioned to you before SkySports Mix HD is absolutely HD but it is part of Sky Signature/Entertainment pack so non SkSports subscribers can sample some sport. To get SkySports Mix HD you need to get the base Entertainment Signature pack HD. You may subscribe to SkySports pack in HD pack but you won’t get Mix HD unless you subscribe to it.
I hope that helps and some of the call centre people don’t have a clue.

NAB, Pakistani Parliament should double check the PCB Broadcast deals
I don't feel comfortable with the PCB refusing to divulge, reveal the revenue that they have signed up to receive from all these broad casters under the pretext of confidentiality clauses in the contract. There has to be an independent, transparent evaluation, oversight of these contracts to ensure no hanky panky is going on

It doesn't explain why the PCB will not explain the details about all the other deals.
Some Indian posters are expressing outrage at Sony for this treachery and demanding the BJP govt to stop the sony deal which according to one India posters was giving the PCB $200 million a year which i find crazy and ludicrous because not even the BCCI is achieving that much. But bottomline these broadcast deals involve huge sums of money and if the PCB is not revealing the sums then someone independent has to step in to examine the contracts in order to ensure that nothing nefarious is going on behind the scenes.
-
25th January 2021, 00:23 #73
As the PCB isn't a publicly listed entity, they are under no obligation to disclose details of their commercial transactions to the public.
In any case, it's not in their interest to disclose these sums as it would likely impact the value of the broadcasting contract in different markets.
-
25th January 2021, 00:53 #74
Thats not true, Ehsan Mani used the same argument in his last national assembly meeting with the parliamentarians and they then threw the rule book at him where they proved that under the laws of the country, the PCB had to answer any questions that the National Assembly sports committee demanded answers too and the commercial transactions of the PCB falls under their remit as well. Disclosing the value of these broadcasting contracts is being transparent and gives confidence that no corruption is taking place behind the scenes.
-
25th January 2021, 01:07 #75
I'd be thankful if you can refer to that specific law. Being answerable to the subcommittee is completely distinct from conducting all commercial affairs on an open-book basis.
It would seriously hamstring the board if they were suddenly forced to disclose the value of all broadcasting contracts to the public, as it would devalue the cumulative sum of the rights.
As long as the board's auditors don't raise a red flag about the procurement process, then there's no real issue here.
-
25th January 2021, 01:54 #76
Must be something unique about the PCB where they are the only board in the world whose broadcast value would suffer if they revealed the details to the public vs the rest of the other Big 5 boards i.e. India, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa who are more open and transparent about their commercial dealings.

Pakistan Cricket Board and SNTV today announced an extension of their partnership that will allow SNTV to provide news broadcasters around the world access to highlights of the Pakistan versus South Africa series and the HBL Pakistan Super League 2021.
This will be South Africa’s first series in Pakistan since 2007 and comprise two Tests and three T20Is, and begins in Karachi on Tuesday, while it will be the sixth edition of the PCB’s annual 34-match marquee event and second to be held in Pakistan.
The partnership means SNTV will provide highlights from each match day to its network of more than 1,200 clients. Founded in 1996, SNTV is a world-class sports video partner relied upon by credible and reputed media organisations to fulfil their content needs 24 hours a day, with 115+ territories reached worldwide.
The PCB and SNTV first partnered last year to distribute highlights of HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 and received an overwhelming response from international news broadcasters.
PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan: “We are pleased to extend the coverage of Pakistan versus South Africa series and the HBL Pakistan Super League 2021 through a global and respected organisation such as SNTV. This is part of our drive to build new partnerships and strengthen old relationships.
“This partnership will allow the PCB to showcase and take its international and franchise cricket to untapped markets that, in turn, will further enhance the profile of Pakistan.
“The extension of this relationship also reflects the interest and willingness of a global media house to work with the PCB, which has built a strong global reputation in the past couple of years by successfully convincing and encouraging leading cricket playing nations to resume Pakistan tours.
“The HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 was a catalyst to international sides agreeing to resume tours to Pakistan after their leading players spent nearly six weeks in Pakistan and realised that the country was as safe and secure as any other Test playing nation.
“This strong and positive message was spread throughout the world by SNTV and in this background, and following a successful 2020-21 domestic season in challenging Covid-19 times, we are delighted to be working with them again to ensure Pakistan cricket continues to grow from strength to strength.”
SNTV Managing Director James Dobbs: “We are pleased to be expanding our partnership with the PCB this year to help them enhance the profile of cricket in Pakistan to a global audience. Using our engaged global media network, we will provide increased reach and exposure for both the Pakistan versus South Africa series and this year’s HBL Pakistan Super League.
“Being able to offer highlights of both these events to our broadcast partners is a great addition to our extensive international cricket coverage.”

Reason is that BCCI don't sell international rights. We have a unique deal that allows PCB to sell their international rights.
Normal deal like previously PCB had was broadcaster signs two to three years contract through open bidding that allows the broadcaster exclusive right to show games at home where all TV revenue is going to the broadcaster and right to sell international TV right in return for a fixed amount given annually to the board.
PCB right now has a public private partnership with PTV.

The PCB's PPP deal with the PTV only relates to the domestic contract. It doesn't apply to international contracts.
The BCCI actually sold all the rights in a bundled deal with Star. However, most of the other boards still sell all their foreign rights on an individual basis in each respective market e.g. CA selling rights separately in the UK/India/SA et al.
These rights always tend to be undervalued as it's a buyer's market in general. It's why there has been a push in recent years from boards outside the Big 3 to be allowed to bundle up the international tv rights of three or four countries and sell as a packaged deal.
