Predict the outcome of the 4-match India vs England Test series
This will surely be a cracking series.
The hosts India just coming off the high of a monumental and historic series win in Australia, and now with largely a full strength side once more, while the visitors have just come off a 2-0 series win in Sri Lanka, with captain Root in seriously good form in similar conditions and a few more star names such as Archer and Stokes to return for this upcoming tour of India.
What do you think the outcome of the series will be?
Arsenal all the way!! (and Pakistan, of course!)
-
25th January 2021, 18:35 #2
India 3-0 England
-
25th January 2021, 18:38 #3
India are 100% favourites for this. England's spin department is mediocre, and their batting against Sri Lankan spin, with the exception of Root, was not impressive.
Arsenal all the way!! (and Pakistan, of course!)
-

3-1 win for England.
They'll get thrashed in the first Test getting bowled out for 35 but will stage a turnaround for the ages beating us in the next three games and thereby ending our home dominance and destroying our Indian fortress.

I think England will manage to win a test. India 3-1.
-

Anything less than 3-0 will be a huge disappointment. I don’t think India will take any game lightly considering WTC final spot in on the line.

I think England might win the day night test at the new builded stadium and might draw one of the two test matches in Chennai.
So the result will be 1-1 or 2-1 to anyone.

India 3-1
The D/N test is where I think England will have a clear edge. By then Bumrah, Siraj will be running on fumes with no Umesh, Shami to ease their workload.
-
26th January 2021, 05:37 #17
Probably best competition India will get in India (taking into consideration Pak v India tests not happening soon).
Having said that, 2-1 at best, maybe 3-0 (to India). If England win the series, then this is an amazing era of tests.
-
26th January 2021, 08:33 #18
Even if we are getting Ind vs Pak Tests, England are a better or dare I say the best competition we'll get. And I'm pretty sure Australia and New Zealand are too. They have the bowlers to pick 20 Indian wickets which Pakistan unfortunately does not even though I agree Pak batsmen are slightly more adept at playing spin than them.

3-1 to India. India will actually be missing Yadav and Shami who are their best home conditions fast bowlers, but I expect them to still do well. Jadeja is probably the biggest miss because it allows them to play Saha(Who I still think is the best pick in home conditions for a keeper)

I've never been against Pant. In fact I would play him in T20s and ODIs despite his performances being not so great in Internationals. But that said, keeping is important in tests, particularly in home conditions for India. There's a reason India has been so dominant over there, Pant should play as a pure batsman if he makes it on merit. India might play Pant if Jadeja is missing though

On merit, Pant walks into team ahead of Rahane. But Rahane can't be dropped. I see no point of derailing things. Let Pant play as keeper batsman.

So, a 2-1 win by Aus on SA is not enough to give them a place in test championship final.
Also, India aren't guaranteed to make it to finals with a 2-1 win over England.

I would expect the BCCI to prepare slow turners as England have an effective fast attack but no spinners of note. I cannot see them taking twenty Indian wickets except in the pink ball test. Whereas the Indian spinners excel at home.
Crawley, Root and Stokes will get runs and draw a match somewhere, but India will get more.
I am looking forward to seeing Foakes when his opportunity comes.
0-3 to India. 1-2 if England wins the pink ball match.Last edited by Robert; 26th January 2021 at 12:36.

Effective fast attack that averages 32 away from home over the last 6 years? Compared to our own fast attack that averages around 25 at home during the same period? India did not make turners last time for England. I expect the pitches to be flat like they were the last time England played .

The Indian cricketers on Thursday cleared their first round of RT-PCR tests and will be undergoing two more rounds before starting training from February 2 for the upcoming Test series against England. The four-match series starts in Chennai on February 5. The entire Indian contingent has already arrived in the city and both the teams are staying at the Leela Palace hotel. "The SOP is same as the IPL bio-bubble during the hard quarantine period. We have had one RT-PCR test done already and we would be doing two more before being cleared to train. Right now, the players will have to be confined to their rooms," a senior BCCI official told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
The players will have to make do with some physical exercise in their rooms under the supervision of the two strength and conditioning experts, Nick Webb and Soham Desai.
In a welcome move, the BCCI has allowed the players to be accompanied by their families as it "could be extremely lonely" during the hard quarantine phase.
Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, senior opener Rohit Sharma, wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, all-rounder Hardik Pandya have all been joined by their respective families and all of them have put out posts from their official social media handles.
"The players have all come back after a gruelling tour. Hard quarantine can be extremely difficult and it would only help their well being that wives and children are around which would help them remain in a good head space," the source said.

Could someone confirm if Jadeja and Ashwin are both playing this series?
Ashwin will be a handful, best spinner in recent times IMO. Jadeja is a force to reckon with.
Let's not forget that India's pace department will also trouble England, so I don't see a chance of England winning the series at all.
At best, England could probably go 1 up in the first game as they are in some good form, but they will get obliterated in the next 3 games.
I think 3-1 to India.

I don't hold out high hopes for England in this series.
Root, Bairstow and Stokes are the only competent batsmen vs spin, and one of those guys is not even playing the first 2 Tests.
A spin attack of Moeen, Bess and Leach does not look very impressive either.
India heavy, heavy favourites to win emphatically and take their place in the WTC Final vs NZ.
Arsenal all the way!! (and Pakistan, of course!)

-
2nd February 2021, 19:15 #56
Lot of ‘if’ in there
Remember it’s in INDIA. Lol
D/N test is taking place in Gujarat which is experiencing right now cold winters. Expecting lot of dew at night which would make batting lot easy. BCCI should never schedule D/N test in month of Feb that too in state of Gujarat
England will be extremely lucky to even win a match let alone series. Lot of fans are seriously overrating England and underrating Indian despite history suggesting different story. They are up for rude awakening
-
2nd February 2021, 19:40 #57
Ashwin will play in Chennai (venue of first two tests), don't know the extent of his back niggle so whether he lasts the full series is not clear.
Jadeja has been ruled out of the entire series because of fracture/dislocation in his bowling hand. Even Shami is 99% ruled out the series (fracture in bowling arm), Umesh out of first two tests but no reports about his recovery, fingers crossed. However all our batsmen are available, at least for now.

England's openers Sibley and Crawley are very weak against spin. Sibley doesn't have enough release shots. Rory Burns will likely come in but his Test record isn't much to shout about. He has a habit of getting his front pad a long way in front of his stumps making him vulnerable to LBW.
The middle order will be expected to score the bulk of the runs.
Where England should be optimistic about their chances than the 2016 tour is their bowling. Archer, Wood and Stone provide that X-factor the 2016 bunch was missing. Anderson and Broad will be vital for the D/N Test if there's any movement.
Still expecting India to take this 3-0.

I'd go Hardik for Shardul in the d/n test especially....his bowling could hoop around in cold d/n conditions and be the difference ....and throw in his gun fielding and also his quick strike batting....he due for something big....however expect eng to go hard in esp this d/n test....but I still feel series will be a lot closer than people are predicting, I expect india to win but be really stretched out....Loss of Jaddu is a massive factor, Same with Shami for the d/n test...will be a good series...go Indiaaa...!

Going for 3-0 for India. there will be a draw somewhere.
But if England win this, it will be a tremendous achievement for them and a shocker for us.
Anyways, hoping for exciting series.

Yet he did nothing of note last month in actual spinning conditions. I'm afraid a brilliant double hundred in Southampton vs a woeful bowling attack in seaming conditions does not foreshadow competence vs spin in India.
As for Moeen, it's true he played very well last time in India, but unfortunately that was over 4 years ago.
Since then he's played 42 Test innings, scored 0 centuries and averaged 20.85. This includes a 3-match tour of Sri Lanka in 2018 where he averaged 13 and had a top score of 33 in his 6 innings.
I don't hold out as much hope for him as you do, but I could very much be setting myself up to look quite stupid. Let's see how he gets on.
