[Video] 'Pawri girl': A five-second video brings India and Pakistan together
A five-second video has done the impossible - brought social media users in India and Pakistan together.
When Pakistani video creator Dananeer Mobin uploaded the video on her Instagram page on 6 February, little did she know that she would become an overnight internet star in both nations.
So you may ask, what's so special about the video? But before we tell you, you must watch the original video:
On the face of it, there is nothing special about it. She says: "This is our car, this is us, and this is our party". The video shows a bunch of young people enjoying themselves.
And that is where the answer lies. When the news has been mostly about death and despair recently, the happy faces in the video cheered people up in the two countries - who are usually at odds on most things because of the decades of sometimes deadly animosity between the two nations.
"What could be better than sharing love across the border at a time when there is so much trouble and so much division around the world," she told BBC Urdu.
"I'm glad my neighbours and I are partying together now because of my video," she says, referring to Indians.
A bit more about the video...
Dananeer Mobin, 19, whose Instagram bio says "call me Geena", is a social media influencer from Pakistan's northern city of Peshawar.
Her posts usually centre around fashion and make-up.
In the viral video, she says the line in her native Urdu "Yeh humari car hai, Yeh hum hain, aur yeh humari pawri ho rahi hai" (you already know the translation!), swinging the camera around as she speaks to the viewer.
She uses the English word for "party" but pronounces it "pawrty".
She explains in text below the video that she's poking fun at "burgers", who come to visit the northern mountainous parts of Pakistan on holiday.
Pakistanis use the term "burger" to describe the rich elites who may have studied or worked outside Pakistan and speak with an American or British-tinged accent. The burger was very expensive when it first came to Pakistan, as opposed to the local version - the humble bun kebab.
"It's not my style to talk like this in burger style…. I did it just to make you all (my Instagram followers) laugh," Dananeer says.
'Memefest' - by Pakistan and India
She even says in the post that this is meme-worthy content. And she was clearly right.
Far from being offended, Pakistanis starting recreating the short clip and doing what Pakistani Twitter does best: making memes.
It wasn't long before some high-profile actors and cricketers got involved.
The Pakistan Cricket Board shared a video of the Pakistani national team doing their version of the video after winning a series against South Africa.
It also saw an explosion in popularity across the border after an Indian DJ took her phrase "ye humari pawri hori hai" (we are partying) and turned it into a catchy song.
Yashraj Mukhate, who has taken meme-able videos and turned them into songs before, gave a shout out to the "pawri girl @dananeerr".

She was actually making fun of 'burger bachey' in Pakistan but many thought that was her original accent.
Yeah I have also seen here memes and Yashraj Mukhate's remix on her famous lines. Even SBI(State Bank of India) used it to promote their offers. You could see so many Indians in the comment section saying good things about Pakistanis, unity, bhai bhai love etc but it is just for as long as that video is playing. They
then move on to next video regarding Pakistan and abuse them.

Brings india and pakistan together? Just because it appealed to our baser senses of making fun of a bimbo doesn't mean people have come together.

Are you sure? Have all bhakhts including you liked it? Our people are ready to get entertained by Pakistanis, watch their dramas online, listen to their ghazals, laugh on Moin Akhtar's video but still act like Pakistani haters. Why were big Indian companies and banks were sharing memes Pakistani memes? Why this hypocrisy bro?

I have no idea who Moin Akthar is with all due respect. Will Google him after this post.
As far as this meme goes, it was all over SM during IPL auction. Now hearing the story behind it is heart warming.
Not everything is an agenda or has an ulterior motive. you not able to separate these things seems to be an issue.

Really? Let me give you an example. Singer Mika Singh went to Pakistan to perform in Karachi but he was critcised and abused by the same people who are now enjoying these memes. Even Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) banned him from working in India. Many in Bollywood ignored him. He had to say sorry to start working again. My question is what was his ulterior motive behind performing in Pakistan? Why are those who were ignoring him back then are enjoying and imitating Pakistani memes now? If this isn't hypocrisy then what is lol?

I don’t follow these things like you do. You can take it up with people who follow these things. I have no perspective to offer here.
As far as memes go, I don’t think it has anything to do with nationality, I have seen Pakistanis use some Bollywood related memes or Indians and Pakistanis use Hollywood related memes or ones from Africa,China,Korea etc.
You seem to be flustered about something here, sorry don’t have anything to add.
On topic it was a smart, funny, well done meme so the girl deserves appreciation. Has nothing to do with her nationality.

Anyways, gratz to her, she fulfilled her dream of 'going viral'!
How come no one posted the remix:

Shes a wannabe "burger" kid herself. She just couldn't pull it off well and now pretends that she was mocking actual burger kids lol. Congrats kid. Got your 60 seconds of fame by leveraging quite a few foolish people on social media. A couple in this thread too by the looks of it.

More like 5 sec actually, anyways the world is such a mess, such undeserving people become famous for these useless things and some real don't even able to get slightest recognition in general public specially both in India and Pakistan. How so many people can get hooked to such cringe is beyond me. Maybe as a whole thi human race is still not as smart as we can think. Can't even distinguish and respect real talent from such cringe.

It is amazing how condescending people can get over someone that they know nothing about, other than the fact that she got famous because of a meme. Firstly, she is not a burger. Her parents have brought her up really well and she is very cultured and doesn’t walk around speaking English all the time.
Secondly, she was mocking them in this video. Check the caption of her original post that went viral. That captain was there at a time when the video had only 15-20 views.
Thirdly, the “60 seconds of fame” has translated into 1m followers on Instagram and several brand endorsements already. She is set for life.

She has worked really hard on her instagram for years now and she got a break that changed her life. What is the problem here?
Her parents have brought her up really well. She is very cultured and respectful, she does really well academically, she is a talented singer, painter and cooks quite well. She is also very creative. What more talent do you want?
She is a really nice girl with really nice parents and they deserve this success. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer family.

My opinion was based on the interview and clip, and her Instagram page.
She reminds me of some of my female cousins, who are also doing the same thing. Being "influencers" on instagram. So i dont know pawri girl, but i do my cousins, and i dont think they have any talent and are wannabes. Getting tharkis to "Like" your pics, and be your "followers", does not take talent.
Is she a relative, or friend of yours? Is this why you are offended? Otherwise i am not sure how you know all this about her.
-
24th February 2021, 14:17 #34
I am offended because I have known here since she was a little girl and none of what people are saying about her is remotely true. It is disrespectful and condescending. Please do not pass judgments on what you see you on Instagram and social media because it is only one aspect of people’s lives.

In the Instagram post, she literally says it will become a meme. It was designed to be a joke and it was simple and fun. It has gone viral and good for her.

You don’t understand the context.
In recent times, there has been a growing trend where these burger folks from all over Pakistan flock to the northern areas and act like they are in Europe or something.
It has been highlighted and criticized on social media by many people and people have made fun of them. The culture of the northern areas is conservative but that doesn’t stop these people from partying and dancing.
Take a look at this video which recently went viral.
Besides, she did not mock any individual. She made fun a stereotyped group and provided some meme content which went viral like crazy. She shared it on WhatsApp few days before she even posted it on Instagram.
It is hardly comparable to people making judgments about her at a personal level even though they know nothing about her beyond the fact that she went viral because of this video.
-
24th February 2021, 18:08 #39
When you get astronomical success people will always get jealous. A lot of these Instagram influencers who are praising her on Instagram are burning like hot coal. Within two weeks she went from being a moderately popular influencer to completely taking the spotlight away from all these influencers who had far more followers and exposure.
The amount of deals offered to her are mind-boggling. She is not interested for now but she is already getting offers from big name Pakistani directors to sign a couple of movies.
More power to her. May she continue to rise and shine.

Regardless of what she meant for the video, she has blown and gone viral, there's even articles of her bringing pakistan and india together in the BBC in the UK with the video, if this isn't positive then i don't know.
And guess what shes had more than just 60 seconds of fame, countless companies have made her offers, she was a VIP at the psl the other day, shes a tik tok star, she has got exposure, exactly what social media influencers set out to do.
I don't know why your getting so upset by her? stop spoiling the PAWRIII

It's really not that funny but I also don't understand why people are getting ********** over it. Getting a 4 second clip to go viral across two countries is pretty amazing given no more than 3 sentences are said, and there is no nudity or action. It's remarkable actually and the fact that unlike many memes which are unintentional, this young lady had the intention of making this go viral, yet still packaged it in a concise way, should be applauded.

Don’t think anyone here said anything particularly offensive or insulting to her. A couple of posts (including mine) called her a ‘burger wannabe’ but that is hardly an abusive term. Given that she got famous making fun of ‘burgers’, it is ironic that you think people are being condescending by calling her the same. I know you know her personally so it is different, but it is unrealistic to expect that people will not judge her based on a 5 minute interview. I am sure she is a very nice girl from a great family but people will always make judgments about famous people based on what they see in the media. A social media influencer is an occupation where you are practically putting yourself in the public domain and people will judge you for every single thing you do. It is simply how things work.
And to be honest it is weird that you are saying 'she is not a burger and her parents brought her up really well' as if being a burger is a bad thing or reflects poor upbringing. She might not speak english all the time but she did in that interview and so people will form their opinions based on that. Now that she is famous, you will have to get used to people making all kinds of comments and a lot of them will be much more offensive than anything said here.

You're taking a hit on the poor girl just cause you don't like the guy...
Not cool!
Tons of people have that car in Pakistan my brother learned his driving on that car/ dad would drive around on that car, have bunch of memories with that car (just like a lot of pakistanis) bunch of relatives drive that car nothing shameful about that
She can make a an hour long video of that car and no one should would judge her unless one is a burger/ABCD himself...
-
25th February 2021, 04:10 #46
My dad also had this car many years ago, doesnt stop asking why anyone would show it off, it's basically a shed on wheels.
Good luck to the girl but if you make videos and love being viral, expect some banta. Its a British term, we take the p out of people every day, it's normal. Dont take it too seriously, Im sure Mamoon will soon upgrade her to a BMW.

That car is a rental. The tracks in these northern areas are dangerous when you don’t have experienced drivers, so people hire locals.
These local people are poor - they do not have SUVs. This is what they have got, and it is a fun experience for these people because most of them have never been on one before. They also get to sit at the back in the open which is cool.
It was part of the meme because that is what burgers do when they go to the northern areas in these rentals other than dancing and partying. They take pictures with these rental cars because they find them exotic and funny.
And I don’t need to buy her anything. She is already making more money than the moaners on this thread can even dream about. Not that she didn’t have money before, she had loads, but what is happening to her now is simply amazing.

I’m actually with @Mamoon on this one. The whole cringeworthy re-dos and how people are salty about this girl going viral highlights how stupid and behind our people are. Take a viral video for what it is and let the hype die down without attacking the person individually. But nah...Pakistanis will always trash the content and the person first before anything else.

Exotic because they haven’t been on one before, not because they haven’t seen one. How many of the upper class kids in Pakistan have been on a Suzuki dabba before?
I thought it would be obvious.
You will find these rich kids getting excited over getting a ride in rickshaw as well, and there are millions of them in Pakistan.

Born and brought up in Peshawar but shifted to Islamabad after her A-Levels. They divide their time between Peshawar and Islamabad these days.
Why would she pretend to be an Islamabadi? It is not London. Also, if she wanted to hide that she is from Peshawar, she would have deleted her Instagram stories of Peshawar.
No one from Peshawar pretends to be from Islamabad these days. It is not the 2000s anymore.

Islamabad is not London but tell that to people living in the F sectors that base their personality and life around the name “Islamabad” which subsequently impacts these youngsters who then aspire to be an “islamabadi” - dont tell me you dont know about this, mamoon.
I recently moved here from Lahore and the level of obnoxiousness is suffocating and whats up with you guys from peshawars filling up whole Islamabad? I havent seen so many pathans in my life than in Islamabad.
-
25th February 2021, 20:20 #58
Yes, “sectorism” is a real thing in Islamabad. A lot of people living in the F sectors and E-11 look down on those living in G and I sectors.
However, Peshawar has come a long way in the last 10-15 years. Sure, it is still nowhere near Islamabad but people are no longer ashamed of admitting that they are from Peshawar.
Yes there are lot of Pathans in Peshawar but why should it be surprising? Islamabad is only 2 hours drive away from Peshawar and the Islamabad territory is right next to KPK.
It is more developed and people move there for better work opportunities etc.
There are a lot of Pathans in Karachi as well. Probably more than you have in Islamabad but they are less concentrated of course because Karachi is a massive city.

I find the whole sector thing silly tho, no one in Lahore does that. And not like these sectors are out of the world, they are simply just a piece of land situated in down town islamabad.
Heard theres a DHA coming up in Peshawar, this will surely improve the real estate landscape in Peshawar? What do you think?
And yeah makes sense about the islamabad-peshawar part.

I don't know why people have issues with this video or that girl. The video was in a good fun. I am also impressed with the manner how Danareen Mobeen has spoken. She looks educated for her age and I have not seen any well-mannered social media star from Pakistan. Kudos to her and she deserves the fame.
-

This is the unfortunate reality of the internet, but sadly it’s amplified in Pakistan and India. Whatever meaningless meanness or rudeness people show behind a screen to others is for whatever reason increased by 10 in social media circles of Pak and India. I guess they are relatively closeted cultures, so when they see a girl having fun and making a parody, they think “why is she having fun, how can she have fun???”
I’m not saying she should be shielded from comments, when you put yourself out there, people are obviously gonna talk and have a gossip. But some of the comments towards her are pretty sad and speak more about the people making them than about the girl herself.Last edited by Suleiman; 26th February 2021 at 00:56.

As a viral trend of the day it was fine but why is this getting so much more attention? It wasn’t like it was a beautiful piece of creative art or unique? It just looks like a generic but funny tiktok video or something. Happy for the girl but may be I am getting old.

It’s hard to gauge what might be the next big trend on social media or for how long the interest might last. However, when something is immortalised through memes, it holds a special place in the hearts of netizens for a long time. Now, two such ‘meme legends’ from Pakistan have joined forces to create a laugh riot online. Yes. ‘Pawri’ girl and ‘Oh Bhai, Mujhe maaro’ guy recently got together for a video, and it’s breaking the internet.
Dananeer Mobeen from Islamabad, who brought India and Pakistan closer after rising to fame and with her ‘pawri ho rahi hai’ video, joined the ‘Maaro mujhe maaro’ man Momin Saqib to create a hilarious clip. Saqib, a British-Pakistani influencer and cricket fan had taken social media by a storm in 2019, with his epic rant after Pakistan had lost to India that year ICC Cricket World Cup.
The viral video was shared by Mobeen on her Instagram profile.

The girl is making the absolute most of her fame. Making connections with all the celebrities in India, Pakistan, hanging out with as many A listers as possible and becoming friends with them.
Every day she posts videos of her and her entourage of friends eating out at the exotic restaurants, travelling on road trips. She has done a few photoshoots, modelling shoots and has claimed to have received film and TV offers already
Does she really have any in incentive to pursue an education at this time? I hope she learns from Momina Mustehsans experience that this fame is short-lived and you have to be constantly on top of your game to trend otherwise people will move on and the hype around you dies.
But yes lol, Mamoon is right, a lot of people are just feeling jealous about how her life has changed so drastically

From the two videos I have seen she seems like quite a happy girl who is enjoying life, whereas Mamoon is is hankering after a life outside of Pakistan which he himself has ruled out, and this is causing inner conflict. This state of depression makes it very difficult to get motivated to do something positive for Pakistan, so understandable.
I for one welcome our new In____ overlords - Kent Brockman
