Varane is entering his peak years, is already a Madrid legend and could become one of their greatest ever players by the time he retires as well as a club captain.

Sure Madrid needs a rebuild, but they are still in a much better position than Man United especially because Madrid faces far less competition in La Liga and Barcelona is out of sorts as well.

Him moving to Man United when they have no chance of eclipsing City over the next few years and that too while playing under a mediocre manager like Ole makes no sense from a footballing perspective.

Nevertheless, the heart wants what it wants. Perhaps Varane is no longer hungry for trophies considering he has already won everything in abundance.

What a signing he would be - Maguire and Varane at the back for Utd could be a fantastic partnership.

Marcus Rashford: Man Utd striker set to miss first two months of season

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford may not play until the end of October after deciding to have surgery on a shoulder injury.

Rashford, 23, had a scan on Tuesday after being hampered by the problem in the latter half of the 2020-21 season.

It was decided the damage was so severe that rest alone would not repair it and United hoped the England striker could have the operation immediately.

However, the surgeon is not available until the end of July.

It is anticipated Rashford will be out for 12 weeks, which will be a blow to United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans for the start of the new campaign.

The news emerged on the day Rashford's England team-mate Jadon Sancho had a medical as his £73m move to United from Borussia Dortmund edged closer.

Rashford scored 11 goals in 37 Premier League appearances last season but did not make a significant impact for England at Euro 2020.

He made five appearances for his country in the tournament but was only on the pitch for a total of 84 minutes then missed a penalty in the shootout as Italy beat Gareth Southgate's side on penalties in the final.

Rashford - together with Sancho and Bukayo Saka, who also missed their spot-kicks - received racial abuse on social media after the game.

A mural of Rashford in Withington, Manchester, was also defaced.

The damage has since been repaired and on Tuesday hundreds of people gathered for an anti-racism demonstration there. People have left hundreds of messages of support and solidarity at the mural.

On Monday, Rashford issued a statement apologising for his penalty miss but said he "will never apologise for who I am".

The statement added: "I've had a difficult season, I think that's been clear for everyone to see and I probably went into that final with a lack of confidence."

Sancho, Varane and camavinga would be a dream window, probably the best in many years.

However if Pogba leaves it would cause a dent that would need replacing too.

If Ole is going to transition to a 4-3-3, a expert DM like Matic is a must, camavinga could fill that role but would need to grow into it and get experience.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Marcus Rashford has gone away to "reflect" on whether to have surgery at the end of the month.

Forward Rashford saw a specialist last week and feels an operation is the only way of dealing with a shoulder problem that has troubled him for seven months.

However, it appears Solskjaer and his staff are not as convinced.

Speaking after United's 2-1 pre-season win at Derby, Solskjaer said a final decision is still to be taken.

"Marcus went away to reflect on it a little bit," said the United boss. "We have to take the best course of action for him and the club. We still need to address it with the experts."

Tahith Chong, who will spend the season on loan at Birmingham, and Uruguayan teenager Facundo Pellistri, 19, scored the goals at Derby for Solskjaer's side, which was shorn of its Euro 2020 stars. Colin Kazim-Richards replied for Wayne Rooney's Championship outfit.

Two of the most eye-catching United performances came from new signing Tom Heaton and Jesse Lingard, who has returned to the club from a loan spell at West Ham, which was so impressive it took him to the brink of a place in Gareth Southgate's England squad for the Euros.

After a quiet start following his introduction as a second-half substitute, Lingard gradually made an impact, hitting the bar with one excellent effort.

"Jesse wants to fight for his place," added Solskjaer, who selected the 28-year-old for only two cup games last term before he left the club in January.

"What he did last season, that is the true Jesse. We showed towards the end of the season that we lacked some options at times and Jesse is in the plans at the moment."

Keeper Heaton, 35, made excellent saves from Curtis Davies and Phil Jagielka on his debut after returning to his first professional club from Aston Villa to provide even more competition for David de Gea and Dean Henderson.

"Tom is here to give the others a bit of a challenge," said Solskjaer. "He wants to play as well. He has been unlucky with injuries otherwise he would have been in the England squad."

    Covid-hit Newcastle lose to York
Meanwhile, Newcastle's pre-season began in ignominious fashion as they fell to a 1-0 loss at National League North side York City.

Michael Duckworth scored the only goal at York Community Stadium with a header in the 87th minute as Newcastle striker Joelinton hobbled off with an injury in the first half.

The defeat came after goalkeeper Karl Darlow tested positive for coronavirus and back-up stoppers Mark Gillespie and Freddie Woodman - who were identified as close contacts - were also ruled out of the game.

Academy graduate Dan Langley, 20, deputised for Darlow as Steve Bruce's men, who included stars like Allan Saint-Maximin, were upset.

Newcastle had planned to split their first team for simultaneous friendlies against York and Harrogate Town, but to avoid mixing, the senior players travelled to York while an Under-23 side took on the League Two outfit at the EnviroVent Stadium.

Manchester United remain in talks with midfielder Paul Pogba over a new contract despite speculation linking him with a move away from Old Trafford.

This comes after speculation that Pogba is 'increasingly unlikely' to sign a new contract extension at United amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

Talks between Pogba's representatives and United failed to find a resolution with reports claiming a concrete offer had been rejected by the France midfielder.

However, speaking after Man Utd's 4-2 pre-season defeat at QPR, Solskjaer said talks between the two parties were going on and that the France midfielder was looking forward to the new season at Old Trafford.

"The talks are ongoing between Paul's representatives and the club's representatives," Solskjaer said.

"All that I've ever heard with Paul is he's looking forward to the season."

Pogba has now entered the final year of his current deal and a decision is looming for United as to whether to sell him this summer or allow him to see out the reminder of his contract and leave for free.

Paris Saint-Germain are interested in signing Pogba - but as yet, there has been no official bid or club-to-club contact regarding the 28-year-old.

Pogba, who can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January, wants to assess all his options before deciding on what is likely to be the last big contract of his career, but Solskjaer hasn't given up hope of convincing Pogba to stay at Old Trafford.

He added: "There's always speculation about Paul, the talks between Paul and his representatives, I'm not in the detail of every single one, I've got nothing to say really, about that.

"Whenever he has been here, he has been so professional, he's always ready to give everything for the team and that will be the case if Paul stays here, or he might stay for even longer. Paul is a very good player.

"We've seen Paul at his best, Paul knows what we feel about it and I've enjoyed my time working with him and hopefully we can continue working together."

Man Utd played their first game since Jadon Sancho's arrival at the club for £73m, and Solskjaer spoke excitedly about the new addition to his front line.

He told Sky Sports News: "It's a big statement. We've followed him for a long time, it didn't work out for us last summer but we still decided that Jadon is the right one for us. He's a forward with creativity, flair, individual skills and he's got the years ahead of him. We're delighted with his arrival.

"It shows the fans we mean business. We hope that we've got one of the best forwards in England for the next 10 or 12 years. We've got Marcus [Rashford] who is 23, we've got Mason [Greenwood] who is a young lad.

"We've got an English core there and then we've got the added experience for Edinson [Cavani], Anthony [Martial], Bruno [Fernandes], Jesse [Lingard] is coming back so I think the forward line is looking really good."

Solskjaer also gave an update on potential shoulder surgery for Rashford, adding: "I think he's still thinking about it. It's a big decision for him, of course, and if he decides to have something done, it'll keep him out for a little while so we'll give him as much time as possible to do that."

While one contract saga at Old Trafford rumbles on, another was wrapped up earlier today as Manchester United manager Solskjaer signed a new contract with the club until 2024, with the option of a further year.

Former club striker Solskjaer initially stepped in as caretaker boss at Old Trafford in December 2018, replacing Jose Mourinho.

After leading United to 14 wins from 19 matches, Solskjaer was rewarded with a three-year contract in 2019, which was set to expire at the end of the 2021/22 season.

Solskjaer led the club to a third-place Premier League finish in his first full season in charge. United finished second in the table last season and also reached the final of the Europa League, where they were beaten on penalties by La Liga side Villarreal.

Manchester United will host rivals Leeds United at Old Trafford on the opening weekend of the 2021/22 Premier League season.

United face a possibly season-defining run of games in October and November, which starts with a trip to Leicester on October 16, the first showdown with Liverpool at Old Trafford on October 23, and a visit to Tottenham on October 30.

November 6 marks the first Manchester derby of the season as champions Manchester City travel to Old Trafford, before United head to Champions League winners Chelsea on November 27 before rounding off the month by hosting Arsenal on November 30.

Ole and Utd have no excuse this coming season. If Utd dont win the league now, then they are a terrible club and a poor team even after spending so much.

Looking at previous managers shopping is useless as new managers have different systems and demand different players.
before the current window, Ole has spent £280m, Klopp has spent £480m, pep has spent £666M.
Ole is still using players out of there positions because he doesnt have the right players he wants.

With the current window, ole should get his players and should challenge for the title, but saying if he doesnt win it when MC are also strenghting is just your desperation, just like how confident you were LP will finish above MU and your challenge backfired on you so bad that you cant even accept it now

So the board has priority over the manager in most cases which means that the club did want him. No wonder your Mourinho got sacked for missing out on world class players like VVD. Truth is VVD had his heart set on LFC. How do you know the average Sancho will be with you for ten years? Another dud you've signed.

Manchester United are “close to a full agreement in principle” on personal terms with the representatives of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

Varane is currently in pre-season training with Real Madrid and is thought to want the move.

No one else wanted Sancho not Man City either forget the Spanish giants. At the time many clubs were interested in VVD but could not afford him also they were well looked after in defence where as we needed him. I have forgotten more about Football then you ever knew! I took care of another Liverpool fan some years back on this very website who was belittling Liverpool then we went on and won the CL and EPL. I was also the only one who predicted Italy would win the Euro 202 prior to the competition starting! You are mad if you think anyone else is gonna pay you some £100 million for an average player like Sancho. Like most English players he is overrated and overpriced.

Spainish giants can not afford a fly right now

Chelsea tried to snatch the Sancho deal in the end and were told to get lost, Sancho made it clear last year he will never go back to city. Since last summer anyway, sanchos mind was set on coming to MU and had even told Rashford to pressure the board to get it done.

I dont care what you do to LP fans, thats no interest to me, you also predicted Italy to win Euros, 2 posts after mine , probably the only time you are right when you copy me.

Clearly youve never had a player like Sancho and never ever will, so i can understand the jelousy, especially since he rejected you.

Also doesnt matter what other clubs did with VVD, he only went to the club that was interested in him and bidded for him, LP could never attract top players like MU do.

maybe you also think Varane is a dud and signing him for £36M is over priced Lets hear it.

Manchester United have agreed a fee of £41m with Real Madrid for defender Raphael Varane.

The price for the France international is believed to be £41m including add-ons and the deal is set to go through, subject to a medical.

Having already signed England international Jadon Sancho for £73m from Borussia Dortmund, the acquisition of Varane would be a further statement of intent from United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team were second in the Premier League last season but finished 12 points behind Manchester City.

Varane is well established as one of the world's top defenders, having joined Real from French side Lens in the summer of 2011.

He has gone on to make over 350 appearances for the club, and be capped 79 times by France, helping them to World Cup glory in 2018.

He started all four of France's matches at Euro 2020 before they were knocked out on penalties by Switzerland.

If the deal goes through as expected, Varane's first competitive action for United could come when they start their Premier League campaign on August 14 against Leeds United at Old Trafford.

I guess that leaves a DM now to complete Oles Jigsaw, he should be given one this window but dont see anything happening.
Rice is over priced, Ndidi not going anywhere, that leaves unexperienced Camavinga who wants to go to spain anyway and out of form Saul.

If we can get Saul for cheap i'll go for it, still young and will be a low risk

That will make it 3 bargains in one window, what an amazing window, most teams dont get 3 in a decade.

Raphael Varane has been described as being a "Rolls-Royce" and "an absolute bargain" after his £34m move from Real Madrid to Manchester United was agreed.

He will join fellow new arrivals Jadon Sancho, signed from Borussia Dortmund for £73m, and free transfer Tom Heaton at Old Trafford as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer builds a squad to try to improve on the second place they achieved in the Premier League last season.

As long as his medical is successful and personal terms are finalised, Varane would take United's spending on players to just short of £400m since Solskjaer was appointed on a permanent basis in March 2019, eclipsing the outlay of Manchester City (£298m), Chelsea (£262m), Tottenham (£255m) Arsenal (£243m) and Liverpool (£119m) in the same period, according to Transfermarkt.

But can Varane help the 13-time Premier League winners bridge last season's 12-point gap to their local rivals Manchester City? Should we now class them as genuine title contenders as they look to end their eight-year wait to be English champions?

    'Defence wins you titles'
Sir Alex Ferguson always used to say: "Attack wins you games, defence wins you titles."

Most Premier League champions have been built from the foundation of a strong back line, and as Liverpool and Manchester City can attest, signing the right centre-back can have an almost instant impact on your chances of success.

In 2016-17, the year before Liverpool signed Virgil van Dijk, the Reds conceded 42 goals in 38 league games. By 2018-19, the Dutchman's first full season, that total was down to 22. Having finished second, a year later they were champions for the first time in 30 years.

While Ruben Dias' impact wasn't quite so stark in that sense - City only let in four fewer goals in his debut campaign than they did in 2019-20 - the Portuguese made a huge difference alongside John Stones. With him in the team, Pep Guardiola's men won 38 of 50 matches - a rate of 76% - and kept 25 clean sheets as they eased to a fifth Premier League title, a fourth successive Carabao Cup success and reached the Champions League final.

Solskjaer will be hoping the signing of Varane can be similarly transformative. The pacey centre-back, 28, is expected to partner Harry Maguire in the heart of the defence.

Ex-Everton midfielder Don Hutchinson told BBC Radio Live's Football Daily: "He is an absolute bargain. He is in his prime, is a multiple league winner, multiple Champions League winner, and is coming in as a finished article and one of the quickest centre-backs out there.

"You imagine his partnership with Harry Maguire would be very good. We have questioned the signings for quite a few years at Manchester United, but this one alongside Sancho shows where they are heading. This is a brilliant signing."

Former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison added: "Sancho is an exciting signing, but Varane is a hell of a signing. He is a Rolls Royce. Lindelof did well but he doesn't have the pace to cover Maguire. "

Going on last season's stats, Varane is a proven upgrade on new team-mates Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly in a number of key areas, particularly tackles won and aerial duels. The Frenchman won an average of 0.8 of the former per 90 minutes compared with Lindelof's 0.6 and Bailly's 0.3 - and 2.4 of the latter on average, which is 0.1 more efficient than Lindelof and 0.3 than Bailly.

His strength in the air will be crucial in both boxes. United scored just seven set-piece goals last term, the joint-third fewest in the league. And Varane's pace will allow them to defend with a higher line, enabling Solskjaer to make his team more tactically flexible.

A World Cup winner with France in 2018, Varane recorded similar numbers of tackles and interceptions last season as Maguire did for United, and the hope is they could bring the best out of one another - like Dias did for Stones on the blue side of the city.

Stats don't tell the full story though. Becoming a great defender is as much about mentality - and Varane is a winner. He has played in 10 finals, including four in the Champions League and one in the World Cup, and won them all.

In contrast, Solskjaer has not yet won a trophy since taking over in December 2018, with defeat by Villarreal in the Europa League final in Gdansk extending his frustrating wait.

And, together with the earlier signing of Sancho, ex-Everton midfielder Leon Osman believes they now can't be ruled out of the title race this season.

He told the Football Daily podcast: "We were all looking at Manchester United and thinking they were two players away - a centre-back and right-sided player. And they have gone and got them, like a top club does. They look like they are having a real good go and look like they could be real title contenders next season.

"Their issue is Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool are looking strong. Do I think they will win the title? No, I don't. But you can only ask a team to improve and Manchester United are doing that."

Hutchinson added: "I think they are slightly behind Manchester City still. Liverpool will be back - [Ibrahima] Konate is a brilliant signing, although Jurgen [Klopp] could do with one or two players still.

"They are the teams to beat - and I wouldn't discount Chelsea, if they make signings. If they get that number nine I think they will scare the others and Manchester United are in the hunt as well.

"We are in for a brilliant Premier League - it is a four-horse race."

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford will have surgery on a shoulder injury next week and faces about three months out.

The 23-year-old has been troubled by the problem for a number of months and felt an operation was the best way of resolving the issue.

United wanted to check but have now agreed to the surgery.

Rashford scored 11 goals in 37 Premier League appearances last season and was in England's squad at Euro 2020.

"Following consultation between Marcus, the manager [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer], club medical staff and specialists, Marcus will undergo surgery imminently to resolve his shoulder injury," said the Old Trafford club.

"He will now focus on his rehabilitation in order to return as soon as possible."

Rashford helped United finish second behind Manchester City in the Premier League last season.

Solskjaer's side also reached the Europa League final but lost to Spanish side Villarreal on penalties.

Rashford made five appearances for England at Euro 2020 but was only on the pitch for a total of 84 minutes and then missed a penalty in the shootout as Italy beat Gareth Southgate's side on penalties in the final.

I am very worried that the first team is basically going to start the season cold.
It cost us last season, and if we are to have aspirations this season we need to find a way to win our first 3 games whilst the first team squad pretty much complete their pre season.

Our opposition are going to have had a full pre season and be right at it from minute one.
Huge first few games coming up

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has confirmed he has undergone surgery on his shoulder and that the procedure "went well".

The club confirmed last month that Rashford would undergo surgery on the problem, which the 23-year-old previously admitted had hampered him during the second half of last season.

The England international could be back training within five weeks of surgery but it would be approximately 12 weeks until he returned to action, potentially ruling him out until late October.

Breaking: Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Raphael Varane on a four-year deal

Varane signed for Real Madrid from Lens in June 2011, having turned 18 less than two months before
Manchester United have completed the signing of centre-back Raphael Varane from Real Madrid on a four-year deal.

A fee of £34m - which could rise to £42m with add-ons - was agreed for the France international on 26 July.

The 28-year-old won three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies with Real during a 10-year stay.

"Manchester United is one of the most iconic clubs in world football," said World Cup winner Varane.

"The chance to come here and play in the Premier League is something I couldn't turn down.

"There is a lot more that I want to achieve in my career and I know I'm joining a squad full of great players who will all have the same determination to win matches and trophies.

"Having spoken to the manager, I can see how much progress has been made over the last few seasons and I now join a group ready to play at the highest level.

"I want to make an impact here and I will give everything to become part of this club's illustrious history."

Varane began his career at French side Lens and made 360 appearances for Real.

He has won 79 international caps and played in all four of France's games at Euro 2020 this summer as they were eliminated in the last 16.

United have been long-term admirers of Varane, whose contract at the Bernabeu was due to expire next summer.

Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson originally pursued a deal for the player before his move to Madrid, and Jose Mourinho was also keen to sign the defender during his time at Old Trafford.

Does Varane signing make Manchester United Premier League contenders?
"I'm absolutely delighted that we have managed to secure one of the best defenders in the world over the last 10 years," said United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"Raphael is a proven winner who we have tracked over a long period of time and we know just how much of a dedicated professional he is.

"We have great depth of international defenders and he will add his immense skill set and leadership to that group. He is a unique defender with a rare combination of top-level attributes that I know will rub off on our younger players.

"He has won everything there is to win but I know that he is still determined to succeed. I can't wait to welcome him into the squad."

Varane is United's third signing of this transfer window, following the £73m arrival of England winger Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and the re-signing of goalkeeper Tom Heaton.

He is expected to partner Harry Maguire at the centre of the United defence, where other options include Sweden international Victor Lindelof and Ivory Coast's Eric Bailly, who signed a new contract in April

Great start to the season for United.

Tougher tests to come, but some good signings this time around and if they can keep Pogba happy, you never know anything is possible.

Manchester United failed to build on their opening day demolition of Leeds United as Southampton earned a fully-deserved draw at St Mary's.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side looked full of attacking menace and threat in that 5-1 win over Leeds, but here they were a pale shadow of that performance as Saints earned their first point of the campaign and even threatened to grab the victory.

Southampton saw off United's bright start to flourish and take the lead on the half hour when Che Adams' shot deflected off Fred beyond keeper David de Gea.

United looked to be on the charge when Mason Greenwood's shot squirmed under Southampton keeper Alex McCarthy 10 minutes after the break - Solskjaer then moving to punish Saints further by sending on £73m man Jadon Sancho for the disappointing Anthony Martial.

Instead, it was Southampton who created the best opportunity to take all three points as De Gea saved crucially from Adam Armstrong when he looked to poised to score.

United boss Solskjaer will be disappointed with both the performance and the result but this was no more than Southampton deserved as they bounced back impressively from defeat at Everton in their first game.

    Its all debt money.

Utd have no excuses not to win the Premier League now. If they fail, Ole should be sacked, whether he will is another matter.

Does it really matter though?! Debt is easily manageable for a club of United's size. It has been for a while.
And Ronaldo's deal will pretty much pay for itself and then some.

Honestly, I am so happy right now. This is the happiest I have felt for a long time as a United fan. Ronaldo coming back home. For a while, I thought he was gonna go to that Oil money lot, but thankfully United realise that they can't let their best player ever go to their rivals and made a last minute bid. I can't believe I am saying this, but credit to the Glazers for Ronaldo signing and also the signings of Varane and Sancho. This is easily the best transfer window Man United have had since the Glazers have been at the club. There are no excuses for Ole anymore. He simply has to deliver this season or get sacked.

And it's funny that Man City are saying that they were never interested in him. Yes, you were but Ronaldo rejected you guys once United were interested in him. Ronaldo was never gonna choose City over United. It's funny that both Messi and Ronaldo rejected City in the same transfer window. But that is to be expected for a club that was only formed in 2008. Oil money can buy you trophies and success. It can't buy history.

Sure, I was only point this out. The Glazers have been hounded, they will continue to borrow to buy keeping the fans happy while they put money in their pockets.

Not true, City wanted him on a free. Whatever the case he was willing to go to City, otherwise his agent wouldnt have long talks with City.

Sure, he was willing to go to City, if that was his only option. But once United came calling, he was never gonna choose City.
