"Helping win the WTC for Pakistan will be a great achievement for me" : Azhar Ali

Azhar Ali speaking to the media:

"I would like to send our best wishes to Arshad Nadeem who is representing Pakistan in the Javelin Throw event in the Tokyo Olympics and has qualified for the final of the event; We will all try and watch this event tomorrow, and we pray that he makes us all proud tomorrow and is able to win the medal for Pakistan"

"Even we were disappointed to see that the T20Is were effected by rain; After practice, we used to look forward to watching these games and were very excited about them but the matches would be called off"

"The number of Tests we play have been on the low side for a while now which is slightly frustrating as a Test player; But sometimes there are circumstances which means that less number of Tests are played; As a player, one is disappointed but what can we do about it? All we can do is to perform the best we can for Pakistan; The WTC has begun again so we will try our best to get a good start in it"

"These 2 Tests are very important for us in terms of the WTC as we have seen that once a team takes the lead in the points table, other sides come under pressure to catch up. So it's a great opportunity for us to make a good start here against the West Indies and we then have the home series against Bangladesh as well; So the idea is to get a good start against our hosts but we also know that the series in the West Indies has always been a tough one for us; The West Indies in their home conditions always give a tough time to the visitors; It will be up to us to play according to our potential and to utilize the experience we picked up from our previous Test series here"

"All teams are always very tough to beat in their home conditions as they have a good idea of how bowl here especially with the Duke ball; The Windies bowling attack in Tests is a seasoned one with the likes of Gabriel, Roach, Holder and Joseph who are all pacy bowlers; So they have a good seam bowling attack and it will be a good challenge for our batsmen but we have performed well against them in the past and we will look to do the same in this series also"

"West Indies are very good at home as we saw in the 2017 series where despite us being strong side, we lost the 2nd Test and really had to fight hard to win the 3rd Test; So you need to put in a lot of effort to win any games here"

"Whilst we need to improve our overseas Test record, we have won Test series in foreign locations in the past"

"In Jamaica, historically the ball has carried well and in our last visit there, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Abbas bowled well; Having said that, until we reach there we won't know about the nature of the pitch as sometimes they have prepared slow pitches also; But the good thing is that we have both options when it comes to our bowling; We have both options in our side so if the pitch favours spin bowling, then we have world-class spinners and if it helps pace then we also have that as an option"

"Given that ICC has now introduced the WTC, all my focus is to ensure I do well in Tests and help my side win important points and then win the Championship; Helping win the WTC for Pakistan will be a great achievement for me"

"I don't think there is any danger that Test cricket will fade out- although I do hope that just because some people are saying it, this doesn't become a reality"

"People who watch Test cricket continue to be fans of this format and I hope that the Almighty grants them a long life and they continue to inspire others to do the same"

"In our part of the world, based on what I have heard and seen, there is a possibility that Tests could be removed from our cricketing calendar or attempts made to do that; In England, Australia, New Zealand we see the crowds coming to see Tests like they did before and there is a big media following also."

Azhar Ali should be promoted by PCB to complete 8000 Test runs at 45+ average. Going by filtered stats, averages in SENA, he is easily the best South Asian test batsmen after Kohli, in past decade. He could have had a 50+ test average had he got the support from Fawad Alam in middle order or Babar Azam in top order in last 4-5 years that he has now. All his cricketing life he was out there in opening 2-3 overs against new ball despite that he has somehow managed to have better numbers than likes of Mathews, Pujara.

He averages 43 not 45, he has 6k runs not 8k. Where are you reading these numbers from?

As a captain he was garbage and as a player he should've been dropped/rested when he had what was it 12 innings in a row with no 50 to his name?

Despite what people think, Azhar Ali has been one of Pakistan's finest ever test batsmen.

Even now, I'd back him to finish with about 25 test centuries if he gets back into rhythm, especially since we have a lot of home cricket.

I will always maintain that even now, Azhar Ali can open in test cricket in the subcontinent where swing is negligible after 5 overs.

If we want to get rid of dead weight from the team, Azhar should be promoted to an opener where he can take as much time as he needs to get set and score big.

A good player, and above all, he has served Pakistan well. Truly one of the best test batsmen from Asia in the last decade.

Conversations around winning the WTC need to keep coming from the big names in our cricket right now.

Pakistan have such a kind draw that not making the final is unforgiveable. Accountability is essential.

A side is always judged by the performance of its senior players and how well they step up. In any other country of the world, Azhar Ali would be shown the door. His Average was once touching 48 in 2017 and its now fallen to 42 in the last 4 years, how this guy is still playing for Pakistan is shocking. This guy definately has a parchi

Pujara and Rahane have atleast contributed twice to memorable Indian test victories in Australia, something that the likes of Sri Lanka and Pakistan cannot claim to yet. Azhar Ali has nothing to show for his pathetic career so far, still plays and has the body language of a debutant.

He has been washed up since 2018-19 and the hundred in England last year saved his career, albeit not his captaincy.

He fails 8 out of 10 times nowadays and should be replaced. However, the issue is that his replacement is likely to be even worse, such is the lack of talent in Pakistan.

People love to bash Azhar Ali when he's down but rarely acknowledge when he delivers. Sad state of affairs.

You can call him washed up all you want, but fact is he was Pakistan's leading run-scorer in tests in the past year with even more runs than Rizwan. So idea that he is washed up is factually incorrect to begin with.

He's not naturally gifted or talented as most top-tier batsman, nor will he go down as a legend; but he's a veteran who deserves respect and has frankly earned it with all that he has accomplished and contributed for Pakistan. Pakistani fans always surprise me with their unrealistically high expectations. You would think their team is ranked No.1 or 2.

Learn to cherish what you have before its gone. Won't be long before you start lamenting about teh time Pakistan had Azhar Ali in their top-order.

Imam ul Haq would be the best man to replace him at no.3 but he is wrongly used as opener in tests I think.

Yes obviously replacements need time to prove their worth

    Exactly.

Saud Shakeel and Usman Salahuddin have been there for a couple of years now. They deserve to bat at the top. Saud has even shown in ODI's that he has a decent batting technique.

Yes obviously replacements need time to prove their worth
Just what we need Imam at 3 to score those big double hundreds thatís been stopping us from beating the best teams.

Imam so far did well to his position as ODI opener , but in tests he find it difficult somehow but he is given less games in UAE, mostly outside in SENA series , with age on his side and with decent technique , except the short ball which every Asian batsman has playing in SENA countries.

With his work ethic in consideration, and the improvement he shows to handle his shortcomings , and his willingness to stay at the crease with a calm mindset. He can be tried as no.3 in tests for a long term solution , I’m very sure with more games and runs under his belt he will come good.

The same mental gymnastics that dhoni went through to put Rohit to open in ODIs and ganguly went through to put sehwag to open.

Saud Shakeel yes he is in the bench looking at his game in the England ODI series , he needs lot of improvement in his batting, he seems to come out as a product of those sluggish wickets and no.3 is too early for him in tests but he might come good at no.5 replacing Fawad when he retires. Imam has played nearly 50 games in ODIs to be judged, whereas Saud played just 3 games and got a scratching fifity that’s all.

Usman Salahuddin a candidate for opening which I’m looking forward.

Wow it was actually 47? that is a massive decline and shame, he should have retired in 2027 lol

Despite his failures, Pakistan still need him and there are no better alternatives, Ali has shown the spirit to comeback from these slumps but because he is old it will take some time for him to find his feet especially overseas

Lmaoo, you think imam is anywhere near rohit or even sehwag you must be delusional...

Imam is a minow basher at best, he is no where near those 2 players you mentioned even before they switched positions.

Imams talent is like 1/10 of rohits or even sehwags...

Saud is definilty a better test player and thats evident by his avg is FC.. while imam avgs in the 30s.. there is nothing to back your claim.. even rohit and sehwag were avging 50 plus in FC..

I wonder if sending him today at number 3 actually served him any purpose at all.

They may as well have kept him in the dressing room given he's not very confident at the moment.

Imam will struggle to average over 30 in test cricket heís nowhere near the best openers too many weaknesses that can be exploited by the best teams.

Someone tell this guy he needs to score runs for that lol. Wonder how such players get a free ride in the team. Hell score a 70 odd in 300 balls when the WTC is done and get another free ride for a few years.

He can help by retiring. These Chacha always save their careers with 100s in either dead rubbers or against weak opposition, whilst consistently failing when needed against good teams

Is the clock ticking for Azhar Ali once Ramiz becomes chairman?

    ==

“Azhar Ali has played so many Test matches but he is yet to establish the balance at the crease. His reflexes are getting slower with age. He needs to do something in his last Test innings here and Pakistan would need him. Same goes with the openers. Unless they provide good starts, Pakistan can’t be a big team in Test cricket,” said Raja.

That's a little unfair given Azhar Ali has had a decent year with the bat

Azhar averages 43 (rounded up) this year with 2 fifties (91 vs NZ, 51 vs SA) and 1 hundred (100 vs Zimbabwe). Can't exactly drop him on the back of he is performing. This is exactly what i was afraid of a power drunk chairman who will go change happy.

On the contrary I think Azhar Ali will be given test captaincy and asked to open the innings.

Not gonna happen under Ramiz Raja.. He might bring in youngsters and even kick out Abid Ali..

Imran butt can only be claimed for his slip fielding and I believe he might be pushed down to bat at 5 or 6 which i think is ideal for him

Azhar Ali might be asked to open the innings to save his career and Usman Salahuddin could open along with him

Or Azhar Ali chopped off Babar will push himself up to bat at 3 and Saud Shakeel will be in at 4 I guess..

Im not saying he plays like rohit or sehwag

With pakistans batting cupboard being empty , and also seeing how Saud played for his 50 in England, needs lot of time to find his feet in intl cricket.

Imam with all the nepotism critics that he had when starting his career, kept going to avg 50+ as an opener in ODIs, yes he failed to avg 50+ in tests but he played most of his tests in SENA tours.

He has got enough experience and mentally strong enough to up his skill, no.3 or 4 in tests would be very ideal for him.. Unless tried never know what he is made of, like what Mickey Arthur did with Hashim Amla (made him open in ODIs and send him at 3 in Tests) which made a cricketing career for Amla, same logic might work for Imam is what I think...

Having said that , yes he has flaws to fix with his test batting, but he will deliver in the long run if chances given...

Azhar needs to zip it and retire already.

Sick of watching him come in, make every pitch look like a minefield, send jitters through the pavilion and then get out for a low score with his usual expression on his face afterwards.
