Barcelona 2-3 Real Madrid: Real beat rivals to go through to Spanish Super Cup final

Real Madrid are through to the Spanish Super Cup final after beating rivals Barcelona in extra-time.

Federico Valverde slotted in the winner after Ansu Fati's late equaliser forced extra time in Saudi Arabia.

In a thrilling El Clasico clash, Real took the lead three times, with Barca coming back twice before Valverde eventually made it 3-2.

Real striker Karim Benzema scored and assisted in normal time, but Luuk de Jong and Fati levelled in each half.

Benzema, who played in Vinicius Junior for the 25th-minute opener, also hit the post in normal time and came close to extending Real's lead with minutes to go in extra time.

He was a threat throughout, while Vinicius' pace on the counter-attack caused problems for Barcelona.

But Xavi's side also created opportunities, especially through Ousmane Dembele and substitutes Pedri and Fati, though they were unable to capitalise on them.

There was also a full Barcelona debut for former Manchester City forward Ferran Torres, returning from injury, but he did not get on the scoresheet before being substituted at half-time.

Last season's La Liga champions Atletico Madrid take on Athletic Bilbao on Thursday in the other semi-final, with the winner facing Real Madrid - chasing their 12th Super Cup - in Sunday's final in Riyadh.

James Rodriguez: Colombia international thanked by Ousmane Coulibaly for life-saving action

Former Mali international Ousmane Coulibaly has thanked Colombia international James Rodriguez for helping to save his life.

The 32-year-old suffered a heart attack and collapsed on the pitch while playing for Al Wakrah against Al Rayyan in the Qatar Stars League on Saturday.

Al Rayyan's Rodriguez rushed to help Coulibaly, adjusting his head to make sure he could breathe properly.

Coulibaly was treated by medical staff before being stabilised in hospital.

In a message on Instagram he thanked Rodriguez, hospital staff and first responders at the match.

"Thanks to God and the work of these heroes I was saved," Coulibaly wrote alongside an image of himself in hospital.

Erling Braut Haaland scored twice as Borussia Dortmund thrashed fourth-placed Freiburg 5-1 to move within three points of Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.

The 21-year-old Norwegian, who scored the third and fourth, has now scored 78 goals in 77 matches for Dortmund.

Thomas Meunier put the hosts in control with two early headers.

Ermedin Demirovic gave the visitors hope at 3-1, but Mahmoud Dahoud capped a dominant Dortmund display late on.

Haaland's impressive goalscoring record also includes 55 goals in 56 Bundesliga matches.

Bayern Munich can stretch the lead at the top of the table to six points if they beat Koln on Saturday.

Robert Lewandowski scored his 300th Bundesliga goal as Bayern Munich netted for a record-breaking 66th consecutive league game to beat Koln.

The Poland striker gave Bayern an early lead, with Corentin Tolisso adding a second before the break.

Lewandowski made it 3-0 before completing his hat-trick late on.

The win lifts Bayern six-points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who thrashed Freiburg on Friday.

Mark Uth thought he had pulled a goal back for Koln with the score at 2-0, but the striker's effort was ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee.

Bayern's 66-game scoring run sets a new club and Bundesliga record, eclipsing their own 65-game streak between February 2018 and February 2020.

In reaching 300 Bundesliga goals, Lewandowski became the first player to do so since Bayern great Gerd Muller in 1976.

Paulo Dybala appeared to send a message to the Juventus hierarchy after scoring the opener in a 2-0 win over Udinese.

Rather than celebrate the goal, Dybala glared in the direction of the club's directors amid uncertainty over his future.

The Argentina striker is yet to agree an extension to his contract, which expires at the end of the season, despite long-running negotiations.
Weston McKennie headed a second to move Juve level on points with fourth place Atalanta, who have two games in hand.
Recent reports in the Italian media have suggested that Dybala, 28, is unhappy with the club's stance in talks.

Juventus are now unbeaten in their past eight games in Serie A.

    Gnabry explains dietary change
FC Bayern star Serge Gnabry speaks as a new brand ambassador for a food manufacturer about not eating meat.

Serge Gnabry is also apparently interested in sustainable and meat-free nutrition: the star player from FC Bayern , whose contract negotiations are currently on hold, is now a brand ambassador for a manufacturer of plant-based foods as a meat substitute.

"I have to be able to rely on my physical performance, so I take my nutrition very seriously," said Gnabry at SPORT1 about his commitment to Beyond Meat - and added that he decided about three years ago to eat less animal protein gain weight

FC Bayern: Gnabry declares meat renunciation
The 26-year-old offensive player, as a so-called flexitarian, doesn't like to do without meat completely - but he does inspire others to do the same.

Especially since for Gnabry the taste of burgers and bratwurst is also possible with vegetable proteins. In addition to the international, professional athletes Romelu Lukaku, Lewis Hamilton, Nick Kyrgios, Chris Paul, Kyrie Irving and Lindsey Vonn also support the plant-based protein diet initiative.

Alves scores then is sent off in Barcelona's action-packed 4-2 win over Atletico Madrid

Dani Alves scored and was sent off and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made his debut as Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid in an action-packed game.

Yannick Carrasco gave Atletico the lead from a Luis Suarez pass and Jordi Alba volleyed in from Alves' ball before Gavi headed in Adama Traore's cross.

Ronald Araujo scored after Gerard Pique's header hit the bar and Alves drilled in a Barca fourth.

But Suarez netted to give Atleti hope before Alves saw red for a bad foul.

Barcelona move above Atletico into fourth place in La Liga.

The Germany international had seen a switch to the Premier League mooted, but he is set to remain in the Bundesliga when taking on a new challenge

Niklas Sule is set to leave Bayern Munich once his contract expires and link up with Borussia Dortmund as a free agent, with interest from England being snubbed by the Germany international.

The 26-year-old centre-half has opted against committing to fresh terms at the Allianz Arena, with a new challenge now being sought.

There were suggestions that he could head to England, with Newcastle and Chelsea said to be among his many suitors, but a man that has been on Bayern’s books since 2017 has taken the decision to remain in the Bundesliga and sign a four-year contract with BVB.

    What has been said?
Sule confirmed that the matter of his future had been resolved several weeks before this month's announcement, stating to BILD: "In the last few days and weeks, there has been a lot of talk about me and speculation about what I want to do and why.

"I already decided a few weeks ago to play for Borussia Dortmund in the future. "From our first contact, I felt that those at the club were very interested in working with me. [They] gave me an impressive impression of the role I can play at [Dortmund].

"I had the feeling that they wanted me as both a person and as a footballer. I was impressed by the way they looked after me, so I quickly knew where I was going to play in the future."

    Zorc confirms delight with capture
Dortmund’s sporting director, Michael Zorc, told the club’s official website of securing the services of another proven performer: “We are pleased that we were able to sign a German national team player in Niklas Sule and retain him for four years.

“Niklas has shown us in discussions that he is very interested in Borussia Dortmund.

“He has a lot of experience, calmness in the build-up game and the necessary physique to take the next step with us from the summer.”

    The bigger picture
Bayern agreed a deal for Sule in January 2017 and welcomed him onto their books that summer as the physically-imposing centre-half joined them from Hoffenheim.

He has taken in 159 appearances while in Munich and savoured four Bundesliga title triumphs.

Sule, who has 37 caps to his name, has also won the DFB-Pokal on two occasions, formed part of a Champions League success in 2019-20 and helped Bayern to UEFA Super and Club World Cup honours.

He has turned down offers of a new contract at the Allianz Arena, but his representatives insist that money was not a factor in a decision to move on.

GOAL and SPOX were able to confirm in January that Sule was ready to take on a new challenge, with Bayern lining up a move for Andreas Christensen as his replacement – with the Danish defender running down his own deal at Chelsea.

Dortmund have now got their man, with Marco Rose’s side looking for another reliable centre-half option to slot into their ranks.

Mats Hummels, who returned to BVB from Bayern in 2019, has endured injury struggles of late, while there are suggestions that Manuel Akanji – who is working on terms until 2023 – may start to explore alternative options.

Sule will be able to slot straight into the heart of Dortmund’s defence, while he is also capable of providing cover for Belgium international Thomas Meunier at right-back.

Thomas Muller scored an own goal as Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich were held to a 1-1 home draw by Bayer Leverkusen.

Niklas Sule scored the opener for Bayern at the Allianz Arena after Leverkusen failed to clear a corner.

But the unchallenged Muller diverted Kerem Demirbay's free-kick into his own net nine minutes before half-time.

Bayern are nine points clear at the top of the table, although second-placed Borussia Dortmund have a game in hand.

Bayern were comfortable after Sule struck and had 18 shots to Leverkusen's nine.

Bayern's Robert Lewandowski headed narrowly wide on the hour mark, while Lukas Hradecky made a comfortable save to deny substitute Marcel Sabitzer as Leverkusen became only the third team to take points off Bayern at home this season.

Leverkusen are third in the table, 14 points behind Bayern.

Substitute Ferran Torres was the inspiration as Barcelona came from behind to maintain their fine recent form with victory at mid-table Elche.

Trailing at the break to Fidel's opener, Barca boss Xavi sent on Torres and the former Manchester City man equalised with an instinctive finish.

He could have scored more but found Elche keeper Edgar Badia in fine form.

However, fellow sub Memphis Depay won and converted a late penalty to fire Barca up to third in La Liga.

The Catalan giants have scored four times in four of their last six games, with January signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netting in each of his four La Liga games.

However, he was well shackled here as Barca initially struggled to impose themselves and Elche led at the break through Fidel's fine finish.

The second-half arrival of Torres changed the impetus and he was immediately involved, cleverly turning home Jordi Alba's knockdown and forcing Badia into a series of excellent saves.

Aubameyang was sacrificed for Depay and the Dutchman pressurised Antonio Barragan into a handball in the box, with a penalty subsequently awarded after the referee checked the pitchside monitor.

Depay himself blasted home the penalty to secure three vital points and move Barca above Real Betis, who host fifth-placed Atletico later.

Paris St-Germain fans booed their own players despite cruising to victory over Bordeaux in Ligue 1.

Neymar and Lionel Messi were among the players booed after PSG were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring at the Parc des Princes, before Neymar doubled the hosts' lead after the break.

Leandro Paredes added a third as PSG stretched their lead at the top of the table to 15 points.

Mauricio Pochettino's players were met by a cold reception as they took to the field following their exit from the Champions League.

It follows calls by some fans for club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Leonardo to resign.

Pochettino's side can now only win Ligue 1 this season and the Argentine said he was sad about the atmosphere at the game.

"No-one who loves PSG, its colours, and who feels the frustration of elimination, can experience it in any other way," he said.

"Sadness. I think that's the right word. The sadness of experiencing an afternoon like this here at the Parc des Princes.

"Messi and Neymar? We are all affected, we understand the disappointment and frustration, which we also share. But we are responsible. We only have to assume it as a team and we will be united until the end."

Centre-back Presnel Kimpembe added: "We understand their disappointment and their hatred but we have to more forward to lift our heads up and win the Ligue 1 title.

"We're all at fault, we're a team. It's time to show that we have character and stick together."

Neymar and Messi's former Barcelona team-mates Luis Suarez and Cesc Fabregas have since both posted messages of support for the pair on their social media platforms.

Suarez wrote "As always, football has no memory", while Fabregas tweeted: "Football has no memory whatsoever… it's a shame."

    Monaco 3-0 PSG

Paris St-Germain's dismal Ligue 1 defeat at Monaco was "unacceptable" and a "sporting shame" says manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The runaway league leaders were second best throughout and deservedly fell to their heaviest defeat of the campaign.

The result also brought up a fourth loss in their last six matches in all competitions.

"The way we lost is not acceptable at this level of competition," Pochettino said.

Wissam Ben Yedder scored twice for the hosts, flicking in a near-post cross and converting a late penalty as he moved two goals clear of PSG's Kylian Mbappe as the top goalscorer in Ligue 1 with 17 goals.

In between, he created Monaco's second, with Kevin Volland turning his shot past the wrong-footed PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, with Pochettino clearly angered by the manner of his team's collapse.

It also followed their recent exit in the last 16 of the Champions League, letting slip a 2-0 aggregate lead to lose 3-2 at Real Madrid.

"We can't start a game the way we started this one," added Pochettino. "You have to get out of the frustration of elimination in the Champions League. You have to think about giving the best of yourself.

"We lacked the fighting spirit against a team that wanted to react after being eliminated [from the Europa League].

"It's unacceptable to start the match like that. There is sporting shame. It can't be repeated. We can still lose matches, but what happened shouldn't - and can't happen again because it's serious.

"The spirit and the performance must be collective. We must stop looking for excuses and finding pretexts."

With Lionel Messi absent due to illness, Mbappe provided PSG's only real threat. But he had few chances to impress as the players behind him were out-fought and out-thought by their, seemingly, more motivated opponents.

"We could win 8-0 and nobody would care, they'd just be thinking about the Champions League," Mbappe said. "We need to remain professional, think of our families."

PSG captain Marquinhos described the defeat as a wake-up call. "If we carry on like that the title will be in danger. We have been warned," he added.

"We came here to win and have fun, but that was a catastrophe."

PSG still remain well clear at the top of the table with 65 points from 29 games, 15 points ahead of Rennes, and also Marseille and Nice, who meet later on Sunday. Monaco move up to seventh on 44 points.

Real Madrid 0-4 Barcelona: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scores twice as league leaders thrashed in El Clasico

Barcelona took their resurgence under Xavi to another level by thrashing rivals and runaway La Liga leaders Real Madrid 4-0 in El Clasico.

Real Madrid were on their best Clasico run in years, having won the last five meetings in all competitions and started the day 15 points clear of Barcelona in La Liga - however, they were met by a rejuvenated and revitalised Barca, who ripped them apart in every department.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice and provided an assist for Ferran Torres, while Ronald Araujo also headed home in a rampant performance by the visitors. Aubameyang has now scored nine goals in his 11 appearances since arriving from Arsenal.

Former Arsenal striker Aubameyang had already been denied from close range by Thibaut Courtois when he popped up with the opener on 29 minutes, bulleting a header home following a fine run and cross from Ousmane Dembele.

Real Madrid looked lost without Karim Benzema, who was missing through a calf injury, and it was no surprise when Araujo doubled the lead when heading home from another Dembele cross.

Carlo Ancelotti changed the shape of his runaway league leaders at the break but it did not change the trajectory of the game as Barcelona were soon 3-0 up when Torres spanked home a fine finish following a fine flicked Aubameyang assist.

Julian Nagelsmann says he has received death threats on social media after his Bayern Munich side were knocked out of the Champions League by Villarreal.

The German club were beaten 1-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final in Spain before a 1-1 draw at home meant they went out 2-1 on aggregate.

"I know I will always get criticism from all sides - that's normal and I can deal with it," said Nagelsmann, 34.

"But with 450 death threats on Instagram, it's not so easy."

Nagelsmann is in his first season as manager of German league champions Bayern, having taken over from Hansi Flick last summer.

His side are nine points clear in the Bundesliga and look set to retain their title.

"If people want to kill me that's one thing, but they also attack my own mother, who doesn't even care about football," added Nagelsmann.

"I don't understand it. As soon as they turn off the TV, people forget all decency. And they think they are the ones in the right, that's the crazy thing."

Asked whether he had considered taking legal action, Nagelsmann said: "I would never be done with it. I get them after every single game, regardless of whether we win or lose.

"There are more death threats when we play with a back three than when we play with a back four, and obviously a few more whenever we lose."

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's ninth goal in 11 La Liga appearances helped earn Barcelona a win at Real Sociedad that lifted them to second in the table.

The ex-Arsenal forward scored with a close-range header after a cross by ex-Manchester City player Ferran Torres.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen saved well from Alexander Sorloth while Alexander Isak fired another chance wide.

Shortly before Aubameyang's goal, Ousmane Dembele's shot came back off the post.

Barca were made to work hard for the points with Sorloth missing a further two chances as Real Sociedad piled on the pressure after half-time.

The game was briefly stopped early in the second half after an object was thrown onto the pitch.

Aubameyang, 32, joined Barca on a free transfer in February after not playing for Arsenal following a disciplinary breach in December. Only Memphis Depay has scored more goals in La Liga for Barca this season.

Barca's win lifts them into second spot on 63 points - 15 behind runaway leaders Real Madrid.

Real Sociedad remain sixth in the table - six points off a Champions League spot with five games left.

Real Madrid need four points from their last five games to secure a 35th La Liga title.

Celta Vigo striker Santi Mina has been sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of sexual abuse.

Mina, 26, will appeal against the verdict and jailed if the appeal fails.

David Goldar, who plays for Spanish second-tier side Ibiza, was found not guilty after being accused of being an accomplice.

Mina was accused of raping a woman in a camper van in 2017, where she had gone with Goldar. Her lawyer said Goldar did nothing to stop Mina from raping her.

Mina and Goldar said the woman consented to their sexual relations.

Mina was cleared of the sexual aggression charge he was also facing, which is associated with intimidation or violence against the victim.

The striker was playing for Valencia at the time but returned to boyhood club Celta in 2019.

Celta have removed Mina from the squad while the appeals process is ongoing and have also opened disciplinary proceedings against the former Spain Under-21 international.

The ruling by the lower court can be appealed against at Spain's Supreme Court.

The state prosecutor had asked for eight years in prison for Mina, while the victim's lawyers were seeking nine-and-a-half years.

Mina has made more than 150 appearances for Celta over two spells at the club, and has scored 11 goals in 40 games this season.

Juventus striker Paulo Dybala has announced that he will leave when his contract expires in the summer.

Dybala, 28, has scored 115 goals in 291 matches for the Italian side, including 15 in 37 games in the 2021-22 campaign.

The Argentine joined from Palermo in 2015 for 23.8m and has won 12 trophies, including five league titles.

"Tomorrow will be my last match with this shirt, it's hard to imagine, but it will be our last farewell," Dybala said on Twitter.

"It will not be easy, but I will enter the field with a smile and with my head held high, knowing that I have given everything for you.

"It is difficult to find the right words to greet you, there are so many years and so many emotions involved, all together...

"I thought we would be together even more years, but fate puts us on different paths. I will never forget everything you made me experience, every game, every goal. With you I grew up, I learned, I lived and I dreamed."

Dybala had been linked with a move to Manchester United or Tottenham in the 2019 summer transfer window, but Juventus opted not to sell.

Juventus are guaranteed to finish fourth in Serie A, after a disappointing campaign which has seen them lose seven games and draw nine in the league.

The Bundesliga giants have taken the decision to part company with their coach and will be under new management in 2022-23

Marco Rose has been sacked as manager of Borussia Dortmund after spending just one trophyless season in charge of the Bundesliga heavyweights.

The 45-year-old inherited the reins at Signal Iduna Park in the summer of 2021 having showcased his talents across stints at Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Monchengladbach.

He was, however, to find the going tough with BVB and ended the 2021-22 campaign eight points adrift of champions Bayern Munich and with no major silverware collected.
