Pakistan announce 15-member squad for the New Zealand and England series, and the T20 World Cup
Pakistan cricket selectors have named an experienced, well-balanced and formidable 15-player squad for the upcoming Twenty20 Internationals against New Zealand and England, and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.
The seven home T20Is in Lahore and Rawalpindi will be played from 25 September to 14 October, while Pakistan will proceed to take on India in a battle of former champions in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup opener in Dubai on 24 October.
Domestic performers Asif Ali and Khushdil Shah have been drafted into the side to provide more firepower in the middle-order.
Asif played his 29th and last T20I for Pakistan against Zimbabwe earlier in April and averages 16.38 with a strike-rate of 123.74, while his overall strike-rate in T20 cricket stands at 147. Khushdil Shah’s ninth and last T20I was against South Africa in Lahore earlier this year. The left-hander averages more than 21 and holds a strike-rate of 109.24, while his overall T20 strike-rate stands at 134.
From the 19 players who were part of the Pakistan squad for the T20I series in England and the West Indies, Arshad Iqbal, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Sharjeel Khan and Usman Qadir have been left out, though Fakhar and Usman along with Shahnawaz Dahani have been named as the three traveling reserves.
The 15-player squad includes five batters (Asif Ali, Babar Azam, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Hafeez and Sohaib Maqsood), two wicketkeeper-batters (Azam Khan and Mohammad Rizwan), four all-rounders (Imad Wasim, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Wasim Jnr and Shadab Khan) and four fast bowlers (Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Hasnain and Shaheen Shah Afridi).
15-player squad (in alphabetical order):
Babar Azam (captain, Central Punjab)
Shadab Khan (vice-captain, Northern)
Asif Ali (Northern)
Azam Khan (wicketkeeper, Southern Punjab)
Haris Rauf (Northern)
Hasan Ali (Central Punjab)
Imad Wasim (Northern)
Khushdil Shah (Southern Punjab)
Mohammad Hafeez (Central Punjab)
Mohammad Hasnain (Sindh)
Mohammad Nawaz (Northern)
Mohammad Rizwan (wicketkeeper, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa)
Mohammad Wasim Jnr (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa)
Shaheen Shah Afridi (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa)
Sohaib Maqsood (Southern Punjab)
Traveling reserves – Fakhar Zaman (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Shahnawaz Dahani (Sindh) and Usman Qadir (Central Punjab)
==
Chief Selector Muhammad Wasim: “While selecting the squad, we have tried to cover all our bases by catering for the modern day brand of T20 cricket that will be required to perform impressively in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. This includes trusting the abilities, skills and experience of the players to perform in a high-pressure global tournament in conditions that are familiar to us, as well as looking at the teams we will play in Group-2 matches.
“Asif Ali and Khushdil Shah may not have impressive numbers against their names but hardly anyone can doubt their tremendous talent and prowess. They are the best in the available pool of middle-order batsmen and we remain confident that they will provide us solutions to our middle-order difficulties through solid performances.
“These two experienced middle-order batters will compliment Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Rizwan and Shoaib Maqsood, while in Imad Wasim, Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan, we have three top-quality spinners who are equally good with the bat and outstanding in the field.
“Azam Khan is an aggressive and attacking batter who also keeps wickets, a combination that has earned him the selectors’ nod ahead of Sarfaraz Ahmed. Mohammad Wasim Junior has been preferred over Faheem Ashraf due to his pace and ability to hit big shots. Wasim will bolster the fast bowling unit, which comprises Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Hasnain and Shaheen Shah Afridi.
“Fakhar Zaman, Shahnawaz Dahani and Usman Qadir were unlucky to miss out on the selections. Sohaib Maqsood’s ability to bat and perform anywhere in the top-order has given him an edge over Fakhar, while the presence of three experienced spinners, who are also capable batters, and five genuine wicket-taking fast bowlers made it difficult for Usman Qadir to get into the side. Like Faheem, an uncapped Shahnawaz was tied with Mohammad Wasim Junior, but we opted for the latter due to his pace and batting abilities.
“Most of these players know the United Arab Emirates conditions better than others as they propelled Pakistan to number-one in the ICC T20I rankings after winning 21 out of 36 matches (13 loses and two no-results). In the lead up to the event proper, they will play seven T20Is at home, which will take their overall tally of T20Is in 2021 to 24 – most by any participating country.
“The home series against New Zealand and England will provide us one-last opportunity to fine-tune our preparations. In doing so, we will like to win maximum matches so that we can carry the confidence and winning momentum to Dubai.
“Our impressive record in the United Arab Emirates, clubbed with the talent we have in our ranks and the well-planned preparations gives me significant confidence that we will perform well in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021. All the players now need to do is not to get overawed by the occasion, continue to keep faith in their abilities and try to give something extra each time they step onto the field.”
Pakistan’s schedule of T20I matches (all matches to start at 1900 Pakistan time):
25 Sep – Pakistan v New Zealand, 1st T20I, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore
26 Sep – Pakistan v New Zealand, 2nd T20I, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore

Where is Fakhar Zaman?
-
6th September 2021, 12:02 #3
Is this some troll job or something by Wasim, knowing full well he wont get an extension?
How can you not have Fakhar in the T20 team, and have losers like Asif Ali and Khushdil Shah? Fakhar is your only proven match-winner.
-
6th September 2021, 12:04 #4
Asif Ali, Khusdhil Shah, Azam Khan.
No Fakhar and Sharjeel in the main squad of 15. Good luck Pakistan. You will need it a lot.

as an Indian fan, happy to see no Fakhar. Only one who can put India under pressure on a given day.

Rip any already slim chance of winning we had. No one could have come up with any worse selections even if he tried best. But Salute to this selection committee and team management, Babar Era is just continuation of the same old tested failed methods and players.

What Khushdil and Asif did actually to get selected?
I would rather go with Haider. Same goes to Sohaib Masqsood as well. This lad didn't perform and Im not sure why he has been preferred ahead of Fakhar.

Glad to see the back of Sharjeel 'Nothing Player' Khan but why no Shoaib Malik?
WCT20 was meant to be his swansong, his farewell.

Why is it that ABSOLUTELY NO ONE ON THIS EARTH RATES ASIF ALI, but the PCB do?🤬
Ridiculous squad, it’s a joke, a bad joke.
Man, if only I was Indian.
-

Given that this tournament is in Dubai the squad is as good as it can be.
The only glaring omission is fakhar. But doesn't he have an appalling record in Dubai? The slow dubai tracks weren't kind to him?

This is the worst squad selection ever in the history of Pakistan Cricket. No joke. Mohammad Wasim is the most clueless selector ever in history.
I cringed when he said no can doubt the tremendous talent and Ability of Asif Ali and Khushdil. Two certified hacks who would not make it past club Cricket in most countries.
No Fakhar Zaman and Faheem Ashraf makes absolutely no sense to me. Two of the most reliable players don't make the cut.
Also how an earth did Usman Qadir a wicket taking spinner not make the cut? Unbelievable.
-
6th September 2021, 12:16 #15
Garbage. Fakhar is one of the handful of match winners in this country and he’s somehow not selected.
Hard to get a handle on this double edged sword
-

Shadab, Asif Ali, Azam Khan, Haris Rauf, Khushdil Shah. We’re definitely winning the World Cup

For people moaning about Fakhar. Realize he averages 13 in Dubai in T20I and 27 in ODI.
He clearly struggles there. He likes thr ball coming onto the bat and he's not gonna get that in UAE.
We can't ask our selectors to be data invested and think critically and when they do, give them grief about it.

-

What?!? Fakhar not in the team? Even sharjeel dropped.
Looks like top 3 are settled. But what happens once we lose wickets.
Asif can’t bat in Pakistan shirt. Kushdil is just as bad. If these guys were to be selected why didn’t they just take Malik?
India winning the first game

asif ali
khushdil
imad/nawaz
shadab/nawaz
hasan

hasnain/rauf/wasim
Not much batting options. Khushdil/Asif/Sohaib are bound to fail. We pretty much don't have any backup option to replace them. God save us in WT20.

Why fakhar and sharjeel ain't in the top 15 doesn't make any sense. Pathetic selection tbh. Seems like ramiz had a say in selecting the squad that's why sharjeel isn't in the squad despite performing decent-ish in the domestic n league cricket.
-
6th September 2021, 12:38 #27
@Mamoon is right when he says our cricket is dead. Look at the talent avaliable. Even Fakhar is not a monster in T20s, wouldn't make a huge difference if he is playing in the team or not.
This team is only dependent on Rizwan and Babar

Khusdil and azam khan remain to be seen. By no statistic measure can we pass judgment on them apart from eye test perhaps.
Asif Ali is the one I would have perhaps replaced with Malik. But it's not major upgrade.
In any case Fakhar hasn't really made a strong case for his selection and whether or not his replacementd are better is another debate all together. It would be difficult to do worse though.

We don’t even have a back up batsman who can play in the top 3/4 if Maqsood and Hafeez fail🤣

Babar
Maqsood
Hafeez
Azam Khan
Hassan Ali
Mohammad Wasim jnr
Mohammad Nawaz
Shadab Khan
Shaheen Afridi
Mohammad Hasnain

Fakhar is a better middle-order batsman than Maqsood, Azam Khan, Asif Ali and Khushdil Shah combined. He is being played out of position constantly since the past one year or so, and has done much better than all these losers.
Point remains, while Fakhar won’t go and win you the tournament, you have a good chance of competing with the big teams if he comes off. I dont even remember any of these four selected coming off in the recent past.
This team has become unwatchable.

This squad is purely selected on Ramiz's input. Wasim isn't that bad in his selection matters as far his past selections are concerned tbh. Saud Shakeel debuted in his era, so is Wasim who is a brilliant bowling allrounder in the making. He has an eye for the talent and prolly the only guy who knows stuff about our domestic players. Ramiz is quite a huge advocate of power hitting and stuff so these two selections are purely on his recommendation.

Looks like a complete troll job. Asif and Khushdil are out of the blue selections. Azam and Wasim jnr have done nothing to be selected for a major event, these lads dont have game time behind them to handle the pressure of such an event. I doubt any team, besides maybe Sri Lanka, would be going in with such an undercooked bunch of players.

We could’ve had this XI
Rizwan
Babar
Maqsood
Hafeez
Fakhar
Sharjeel
Hassan Ali
Mohammad Nawaz
Shadab Khan
Shaheen Afridi
Mohammad Hasnain.
There was absolutely ZERO pressure on Mohammad Wasim if he hadn’t picked those two hacks in Asif Ali and Khushdil Shah, but now that he’s picked those two failures the pressure will be on him.
And for those blaming Rameez Raja, get a grip. If the CS can’t put his foot down and select the squad of his choice then he’s in the wrong job.

. I get the anger/ angst/ surprise over the non selection of Fakhar Zaman (few Indian fans will ever discount this man), and Sharjeel also.
But in my opinion the most surprising part is not their dropping. For me it’s actually the selection of Azam Khan.
It looks like a bad choice all round. First there’s a wicket keeper already there in the shape of Rizwan. Second, it’s the one selection that is seriously upsetting team composition - had Rizwan been retained as keeper you could have brought Fakhar into the team (and kept Asif and the other slowcoach batsman if you wanted). Third, the lad is seriously overweight, doesn’t have enough experience and I feel he will be taken apart at that level. And last, this feels, looks and probably is the worst case of nepotism one has seen in an international cricket team in a while.
Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

LOL hahahahah asif ali and khushdil shah.
These hacks are probably the worst players to play for Pakistan.
Khushdil shah after playing 9 t20i innings he has average of 21 with 109 strike rate.
Less said about that legend hack asif ali the better.
He averages 16 yeah 16 with 123 strike after playing more than 25 innings.
How can that clueless selector Mohammad wasim select these jokers.
This Mohammad wasim should be kicked out

Beggers can't be choosers.
That's what's been happening to us for a long time, and now it's particularly bad. We don't have anyone to select, domestics are dry.
Not a single quality T20 batsman at the top order.
It's not a matter of selection. Why? Because THERE'S NOBODY TO SELECT.
This is what happens when your stocks have completely dried out. There's no batsman even in the domestic circle who's good enough.
Khushdil
Azam Khan
Both low quality, but this is ALL WE HAVE.
Fakhars a spent force too, no use crying over him. He's no world beater.
Yes Sharjeel on paper gives us a good opener, the only person who deserved selection but didn't get picked.

I think Pakistan are too conservative in their thinking...
Its only T20.
Just pile in the top 6 with whoever can do the job on the day, can easily play Imad at 6...if he has more of a chance at scoring than Asif or Khushdil.
Just be a bit a bit out of the box, look at the score that you need, and aim to get it.
Why not ask Hasan Ali to pinch hit?

Asif Ali better get his grip right. Looks like faislabadi supported by misbah camp.
He has done nothing and only thing to mind comes a easy drop vs West Indies in the World Cup.

So no Sharjeel and no Fakhar
Insistence on playing Rizwan as an opener has cost Pakistan dearly.

So as expected . . because both Babar and Rizwan are not half as useful down the order, unfortunately Fakhar has had to pay for it (Sharjeel too) . .
Khushdil Shah?! The guy is over rated to say the least . . he can only tonk the spinners . . and only mediocre ones . .he's not going to find many of those in the WC
Azam Khan?! I am still trying to understand what he has done to merit a place in the squad . .
Mohammad Nawaz . . it is a fallacy to have him in the squad as an all rounder . . when we need 35 of the lats 3 overs, the last person I'd want on the crease is Nawaz . . he is a good enough bowler, but do we have a spot for a specialist spinner?
Usman Qadir .. you carry him for a year . . you play him games . . and he has been decent . . nothing extra ordinary, but decent . . given the tournament is happening in the UAE, surely his leg spin would be decent. . he is also a better bowler than Shadab . . we drop him when it came to the final squad
MOhammad Wasim Jr. . . what has he done? if you needed an all rounder, I feel like Aamer Yamin has done more in domestic cricket . . Faheem Ashraf has been invested in . . but we throw in Wasim . . not sure how that happened either . .
Overall, it doesn't seem like a very well thoughtout squad . . but I'd put less blame on Mohammad WAsim here and more on the Babar/Misbah and the lack of clarity they've had in their T20 thinking in the last 1 year . .

Are we going to play WC with only 2 batsmen babar and rizwan? This is an unbelievably bad squad. Incredible

Fakhar's exclusion is inexplicable.
apart from being a match winner with the bat he's also a gun fielder.
With the players we have our team is going to give away 20-40 runs in the field

I think Wasim knew he was going to get sacked after world t20, so he just wanted to mess things up further. Khushdil, Azam, and Asif Ali have no place in the team. They’re proven failures for the last 2 years. Fakhar, and Sharjeel should’ve been given a nod. Well, best of luck of the team anyways. From #1 in t20 2 years ago to this. Wow!
