India, Israel, UAE, US meet to expand cooperation, maritime security

India has robust defence, security and trade cooperation with Israel and the US, while the UAE is a key energy partner

The first meeting of the foreign ministers of India, Israel, the US and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) decided to establish an international forum for economic cooperation and discussed joint infrastructure projects in transportation and technology.

The meeting, described in some quarters as a “new Quad”, also focused on ways to expand economic and political cooperation in the Middle East and Asia and to enhance maritime security.

The meeting was joined by external affairs minister S Jaishankar and Israeli foreign minister Yair Lapid from Jerusalem, US secretary of state Antony Blinken from Washington and UAE foreign minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan from Abu Dhabi. Jaishankar is currently on a bilateral visit to Israel.

In a tweet, Jaishankar described the discussions as “fruitful” and said the foreign ministers had agreed on a speedy follow-up. The Israeli foreign ministry said the four ministers intended hold an in-person meeting at Expo 2020 in Dubai in the coming months.

“Discussed working together more closely on economic growth and global issues. Agreed on expeditious follow-up,” Jaishankar said.

Blinken tweeted that the meeting had focused on “shared issues of concern in the region and globally, and the importance of expanding our economic and political collaboration”.

Lapid, who initiated the process for the meeting during a recent visit to Washington, said at the start of the meeting: “Around this virtual table - there is a unique set of capabilities, knowledge, and experience that can be used to create the network that we all want to see created.”

The synergy between the four countries will help them work together on infrastructure, transport, maritime security and other issues, he said.

The key to success is moving from a “government-to-government” approach to a “business-to-business” approach and turning the initiative into a “working process that will put boots on the ground, changing infrastructure around the world”, Lapid added.

The ministers decided to establish an international forum for economic cooperation, the Israeli foreign ministry said.

The ministers also discussed joint infrastructure projects in transportation, technology, maritime security, and economics and trade, as well as additional joint projects, the ministry added.

Each country will appoint senior professionals to a joint working group that will formulate options for cooperation.

US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said in a statement that the foreign ministers had “discussed expanding economic and political cooperation in the Middle East and Asia, including through trade, combating climate change, energy cooperation, and increasing maritime security”.

They also discussed people-to-people ties in technology and science, and ways to support global public health in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. Blinken reiterated the Biden administration’s “support for the Abraham Accords and normalisation agreements and discussed future opportunities for collaboration in the region and globally”, Price said.

Price also told a news briefing that the US, the UAE, Israel and India share many interests and the meeting was an opportunity for the ministers to discuss a range of topics, including expanding economic and political cooperation in their respective regions, climate change, energy cooperation, and maritime security.

The meeting built on the momentum created by the Abraham Accords of last year, and it was held less than a week after Blinken met Lapid and Sheikh Abdullah in-person in Washington on October 13 to review progress in the normalisation of Israel’s relations with Arab states.

This normalisation can be a force for progress between Israel and Arab states and also between Israelis and Palestinians, Blinken said at the time.

The three countries had also launched two working groups on religious coexistence and building tolerance, and on water and energy. The trilateral partnership made it possible for the countries to discuss urgent regional security issues such as Iran and Syria, Blinken had said.

India, Israel and the UAE have already stepped up trilateral cooperation, especially in trade and investment, since the US brokered the Abraham Accords in August 2020.

The meeting also dovetailed with India’s efforts to build new plurilateral and multilateral partnerships focused on cooperation in areas ranging from security to connectivity and energy. India has robust defence, security and trade cooperation with Israel and the US, while the UAE is a key energy partner.

The UAE is home to more than three million Indians, and security cooperation has been growing rapidly, with the first ever visit by an Indian Army chief taking place last year.

India has backed the Abraham Accords process, following which Israel also normalised relations with Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco. The external affairs ministry has said these efforts are in line with India’s support for “peace and stability in West Asia which is our extended neighbourhood”.

In May this year, India, Israel and the UAE concluded the first trilateral partnership whereby an Israel-based company will produce a robotic solar cleaning technology in India for a project in the emirates.

A statement issued at the time by the Israeli embassy in New Delhi said the Abraham Accords agreement between Israel and the UAE had “paved the way for friendships and business partnerships across the region”. The statement added: “India being a friend of both the UAE and Israel is clearly the preferred partner to leverage the global potential of the UAE, Israel and India trilateral.”

    UAE is a dictatorship.

The alliance is nothing. Zionist Israel and Hindutva India have the same goals in the region. Ariel Sharon met the BJP many years ago, cementing this alliance.

They failed to stop Pakistan having nuclear weapons. They failed in their proxy state terrorism over the last 10+ years.

Let these extremist governments work together, they cant touch a nuclear Pakistan.

India is pretty much a lapdog of US and Israel foreign policy, they say fetch and Modi gets the bone.

UAE are just looking out for their best interests financially. Being a beacon for the broader Islamic world isnít on their agenda but Iím not sure we should be holding them to that standard. Pakistan needs a big shift here, a Pak-Iran-Turkey alliance focused on energy independence is something thatís now needed. Itís a shame we havenít developed deeper ties with our next door neighbour due to Saudi pressure.

    1. From running after Americans to loan some dollars for IMF to asking for loans from UAE/Saudis to
becoming a lapdog of China.. Everyone knows that state of Pakistan is always begging for money and loans and bailouts. I will not respond to the Baap Jibe but everyone knows how Pakistanis align themselves when seeing some dollars to open more Papa Johns in America.

2.I am a proud Sikh, So My Gurus sacrificed their lives against forceful conversions and we do not have concept of idols. But, that was 16th century. If some one comes again to my homeland in 21st century with the same mindset and tries to take away my Indias freedom, we very well know how to protect our mothers, not sell them to highest bidder and allow for example the Americans free pass to Drone Bomb the country.

Come on, man.. have some shameÖ

There's nothing wrong with the alliance. Foreign policy is a cut throat job, there are no permanent friends or enemies. People are naive to think that foreign policy of nations works on the emotions of people like religious affiliation, culture, human rights, etc. None of these things matter in foreign policy, everyone cares for his own interests first.

India is a democracy. But we cannot tell others what kind of government they want. Its their wish.

When was the last time an Arab country invaded India?

I haven't seen the Emirates govt poke their noses into Kashmir or CAA or such things in India. They mind their own business.

Afaik that Indians hold the white collar jobs in UAE in addition to the blue collar jobs.

Its laughable to suggest that UAE can throw bones at a 3trillion economy. We are not a country living on arab largesse or bailouts.

Qatar has an even lower crime rate, so does Kuwait and Oman

As for UAE and Qatar, they both are disliked by different people for their interference in foreign countries domestic politics, sometimes the interference being military.

Why do people keep mentioning Iran with Pakistan in some fantasy alliance? Iran and Pakistans interests have never allied from Afghanistan to India and their constant attempts to forment trouble in Pakistan not aside.

They're still not as bad as some Arab nations but unlike Turkey there is literally no evidence of them being good enough to be any sort of allies.

Whatever is the degree of cooperation, the important thing from Indian perspective, is to focus & benefit from knowledge transfer and technology sharing, of the scientific genius of Israel & America.

The focus should always be, to win the trust of the partners , using sincerity & commitment to cause - to obtain what India needs the most - the technology principals.

The world currently recognises passports and nation states as identity not religion. What you think doesn't change the laws that run the world.

When a person from BD starts name calling UAE, which is ahead of BD in most indicators, its amusing and its essential to show the mirror.

Its more amusing that you post on issues about India UAE Israel etc but is missing from the thread about BD.

But I digress and I see some of my previous posts have been deleted even one which included an on topic statement of why I find the Indian policies laughable. But I understand itís all about national interests, so thatís fine. Pakistan can align itself similarly with different countries and itís hypocritical of Indians here to act all smug over it. Itís hilarious how the Indian posters are so fixated on an off the cuff non topic related comment and totally chose to ignore the part thatís addressing the topic at hand. Iím sorry if I pushed some buttons, guys but can we please try and address and perhaps answer my comment on the topic?

Same, i can just sense this is just wrong , considering the tensions between the 2-3 taxi driving factions or whatever. I used to take a lot of cabs there in a period of 3 years, from my home in the greens to dubai academic city, and the community was homogeneously referred to as malabaris, ive heard a lot of cab stories but never this kinds.

Am I missing something.. What has this thread got to do with south indians. Besides, stereotyping a specific community based on a few incidents is not the most sensible thing to do. I certainly wouldn't be doing it if I were a Pakistani, given the rep Pakistanis get in the west.

    partnerships with USA and China?
Yeah hilarious indeed that you think a casual stereotype is an off the cuff comments.

I have a share of harmless off the cuff comments here that were way less stereotypical that got people triggered. Not sure if you were one of those too.

Itís being mentioned because itís time to change tactics and strategy. What good have the saudis and uae been for Pakistan? In the end they screwed Pakistan to serve their own best interests. The problem is we wouldnt know . There arenít any hindu counties per se. India is still technically a secular democracy and Nepal is no longer a Hindu country either. It is also secular.

Now are you referring to indic/Hindu ethnic countries like even Pak,Bangla and Srilanka?

Then maybe the terminology threw me off.

You wonít take it to well if India calls itself a Hindu country now would you?

I am from both Canada and Bangladesh. I am a dual citizen.

Either way, I am allowed to criticize UAE whether I am in Canada or Bangladesh. I don't need an Indian man's approval. I don't live in BJP's India.

What you are failing to understand is the fact Muslim Ummah is not restricted by manmade boundaries.

But you are correct, technically India is a Democracy that is practicing extremely hard to be the only Hindu nation in the world.

India the country is a Hindu majority country but the constitution is secular. Now obviously that has to do with India being a Hindu majority country but thatís a debate for a different day

Thatís a very good point, we will do as much as we please and thatís what partnership on an equal footing is all about. Rather than laying down and taking it, really hard everywhere and then a few years later deciding to form a ďstrategic partnershipĒ with the very same people who you claim raped and pillaged your lands, then lorded over it for so many years, pales in comparison to a lot of stuff thrown around here by Indian posters. Now you are colluding with Arab Monarchs who have proposed and applied shariah laws In Their countries, stuff you guys vehemently oppose and call draconian.

Yes but this is fantasy. Because Iranians have showed no intention for any sort of alliance from making threats to us or trouble in Pakistan and that's with Pakistan being neutral. To make some sort of 'strategy' you have to look at what's on the table and what's realistic. No point listing countries who have never had any interests aligned to ours and who have been indifferent at best to belligerent at worst. Otherwise we might as well name other unrealistic countries in a range of fantastical alliances as all of them would be equally as realistic.

Saudis and other UAE states are no allies. They have done nothing but brought hardline fundamentalism to Pakistan and used it for proxy war against Shiites (same with Iran). None of these countries are friends of Pakistan.

Saudis supply you cheap oil on deferred payment basis. Dont they?

Malaysia literally begged India to buy Palm oil from them after India stopped it. They may have better infrastructure but not a better economy.

Turkey ofcourse is ahead in many indicators but India is ahead in economic growth and even in industrial development like IT,Pharma,Auto sector and others.

I was replying to the poster who referred to the Muslim subcontinental countries, so only way to draw a comparison is to do like for like, which would be the hindu subcontinental country. When the distinction has been made already by your compatriot along religious lines, why would it be a problem to respond on topic?

No. Modi's government got elected on a purely developmental agenda. 'Sabke saath sab ka vikaas' was their election slogan.

All the talk of Modi wanting to obliterate Islam is from Pakistanis who are yet to come to terms with the fact that a substantial number of their 'ummah' rejected Pakistan in 1947 to remain in India.
