Football : January transfer window 2022

The January transfer window is just around the corner. From key dates to how to follow with Sky Sports, here's what you need to know ahead of the window opening next month...

    When does the window open?
The transfer window opens on Saturday January 1, 2022 for clubs in England and Scotland.

In Europe, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 windows will also open on January 1, while La Liga and Serie A will begin their trading on Monday January 3, 2022.

    When does the window open?

Premier League: Saturday January 1, 2022
    EFL: Saturday January 1, 2022
    Scotland: Saturday January 1, 2022
    Bundesliga: Saturday January 1, 2022
    Serie A: Saturday January 1, 2022
La Liga: Monday January 3, 2022
    Ligue 1: Monday January 3, 2022

    When does the window close?

The January transfer window will close for all leagues across the UK and Europe on Monday January 31, 2022 at 11pm GMT.

    Transfer deadlines around Europe...

Premier League: Monday January 31, 11pm GMT
EFL: Monday January 31, 11pm GMT
Scotland: Monday January 31, 11pm GMT
Bundesliga: Monday January 31, 5pm GMT
    Serie A: Monday January 31, 7pm GMT
La Liga: Monday January 31, 11pm GMT
    Ligue 1: Monday January 31, 11pm GMT

    What deals can be done?

As usual, players can be bought and sold across Europe and beyond. Loan deals are also able to be completed during the month-long window.

    Other deadlines around the world...

    Feb 1: Mexico
    Feb 2: Portugal
    Feb 8: Turkey
    Feb 10: Australia
Feb 22: Russia (window opens Jan. 26)
    Feb 28: China

    What to look out for?

It promises to be a busy month at St James' Park as Newcastle's new owners look to make a splash in their first transfer window.

Eddie Howe's relegation-threatened side are second bottom of the Premier League and have just picked up their first win of the season at the 15th time of asking. However, the new owners will be looking to avoid relegation at all costs so expect plenty of incomings at Newcastle next month.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe says he has 'half an eye' on the January window but insists his main focus is on working with the players currently at his disposal

Meanwhile, it was a big summer at Manchester United with Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho all arriving at Old Trafford. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is no longer in charge, so will interim boss Ralf Rangnick look to make any changes to his squad?

What about Man City? They splashed £100m on Jack Grealish in the summer window but all the talk was about the potential arrival of a striker? Harry Kane's name was constantly mentioned in discussions about Peo Guardiola's side potentially signing a forward, while Cristiano Ronaldo was also linked with a move to the Etihad late in the window before his move to Man Utd. Will Guardiola make his striker move in this window?

Who could be on the move?

It will be an interesting window because there are a number of high-profile players who will see their contract at their current clubs expire in the summer.

PSG forward Kylian Mbappe is in that position and Real Madrid saw huge bids for the France international rejected by PSG in the summer. Could Real make a move for Mbappe again or will they wait and try to sign him on a free next summer?

Paul Pogba's deal at Man Utd also expires next summer and Antonio Rudiger is in a similar position at Stamford Bridge. Will they leave their clubs in January or will Man Utd and Chelsea both lose valuable assets for free?

Harry Kane's future dominated the summer transfer window, but following Antonio Conte's arrival at Tottenham, will the speculation continue or is Kane happy to stay in north London?

It remains to be seen whether Man City reignite their interest in the England captain...

Jesse Lingard is another player who could be on the move. He chose to stay at Man Utd in the summer, but a lack of first-team action could see him now leave Old Trafford, with West Ham a potential destination.

    Does he have a point?

Ralph Hasenhüttl believes the Premier League should consider preventing January signings from featuring in matches rearranged from the past month. Southampton complained to the league about a perceived lack of transparency after their game last Sunday did not go ahead because of a combination of Covid cases and injuries in the Newcastle camp.

Hasenhüttl said he raised the issue at the last Premier League managers’ meeting and has called for the league to consider banning signings from playing in rescheduled games to protect the division’s integrity. Newcastle, for example, completed the purcahse of Kieran Trippier on Friday and the defender would be eligible for the rearranged match at St Mary’s.

“It is for us the same,” Hasenhüttl said. “We can also now with our new owners sign three players and I don’t think it is really fair for them to play in games that have been postponed. I think the last word is not spoken so far. I was disappointed we could not play because we have been in good shape. We also had five cases of Covid. It is not long ago that we had to fill up our team with nine academy players and then we got a big defeat against Man United.”

Southampton visit Swansea in the FA Cup on Saturday and take on Brentford in a rearranged league game on Tuesday. “I think it should maybe be something the Premier League is discussing,” Hasenhüttl said. “How many games have we had postponed? I think 16, 17 or 18 games so far. It is something that you cannot stop playing in December and wait for a signing in January to play.

“Nobody did this but it could in the future be an opportunity. You shouldn’t get that … We could now sign four players and against Brentford we could play with a completely different squad.” The goalkeeper Willy Caballero has agreed a contract extension until the end of the season.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have rejected a £15m bid from Tottenham for winger Adama Traore.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte is keen on the 25-year-old Spain international, who has 18 months left on his contract at Molineux.

Wolves manager Bruno Lage knows he must sell before he buys new players this month.

Traore scored his first goal of the season when Wolves beat Southampton 3-1 on 15 January.

Wolves signed Traore from Middlesbrough for £18m in August 2018.

Conte believes he can use Traore in a wing-back role, similar to how he worked with forward Victor Moses during his time at Chelsea.

    Süle decision made!
Niklas Süle leaves FC Bayern at the end of the season. Since the national player is on a free transfer, many doors are now open to him.

Niklas Süle will leave FC Bayern on a free transfer when his contract expires in the summer. SPORT1 can confirm a corresponding report by Sport Bild .

Another round of talks between Süle's advisors and those responsible at FC Bayern was originally planned for February.

But in the past few days, the topic has gained momentum, the central defender made a final decision and, after months of speculation, created facts.

FC Bayern loses Süle: Barca and Chelsea are interested

Similar to David Alaba, who was transferred to Real Madrid in summer 2021, Süle is tempted by a new challenge abroad. It has not yet been decided where exactly he will go. According to SPORT1 information, FC Barcelona and FC Chelsea are particularly interested in him and are in lively exchange with the Süle side.

In addition, the nouveau riche Premier League club Newcastle United is putting out feelers for the 26-year-old. But SPORT1 knows: A change to the Magpies is out of the question for Süle, he wants to continue playing regularly at the top international level.

Born in Frankfurt, he moved from TSG Hoffenheim to Munich in 2017 for around 20 million euros. Since then he has played 158 games for the record champions and won 13 titles. Süle was also an integral part of the 2020 triple team.

Süle leaves FC Bayern – is Rüdiger or Ginter coming?

So now the decision for a new adventure in a new country - although he has blossomed again under his former Hoffenheim sponsor Julian Nagelsmann and has been showing consistently good performances for months.

FC Bayern must therefore look for a new defender. Those responsible are prepared and have several candidates in mind.

According to SPORT1 information, there was a meeting with the management of Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen in December . Like Süle, the Dane is available for free in the summer.

His teammate Antonio Rüdiger as well as Denis Zakaria and Matthias Ginter (both Borussia Mönchengladbach), Matthijs de Ligt (Juventus Turin) and Nico Schlotterbeck (SC Freiburg) are considered transfer candidates. So far, however, there have been no concrete discussions with these players.

Anthony Martial: Sevilla prepared to cover Man Utd forward's wages

Sevilla have made Manchester United a loan offer for Anthony Martial that would see the La Liga side cover his wages for the rest of the season.

France forward Martial, 26, has been targeted by the Spanish club for a number of months.

It is thought he has indicated a willingness to take a pay cut to allow the deal to go through.

Martial, who joined from Monaco for £36m in 2015, has told Ralf Rangnick he wants a change of scenery.

That view has not changed even though Martial featured for the first time since interim United boss Rangnick took charge when he came on as a substitute in Saturday's 1-0 win against West Ham.

Martial has made 11 United appearances this season, scoring a single goal, against Everton on 2 October.

United are yet to decide whether to accept the offer.

Sevilla are challenging for the La Liga title and currently second in the table, four points behind leaders Real Madrid with 16 games remaining.

Martial is one of a number of United players with uncertain futures.

Jesse Lingard is still wanted by Newcastle, although BBC Sport has been told reports the Magpies have offered a £10m loan fee for the England international, whose contract expires in the summer, are wide of the mark.

Goalkeeper Dean Henderson, 24, is also looking to try to find regular football after losing out to David de Gea in the battle to be United's number one.

The Premier League winter transfer window closes at 23:00 GMT on 31 January.

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a £20 million deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Adama Traore.

Spurs had a bid of £15m for the Spanish international rejected last week, with Wolves understood to value Traore at £25m.

Aston Villa have signed defender Calum Chambers from Arsenal on a three-and-a half-year contract.

The 27-year-old, who has only made five appearances for the Gunners this season, was out of contract in the summer and joins on a free transfer.

He is Villa's third January signing following the arrivals of Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona and Lucas Digne from Everton for £25m.

"It's a massive club and they're in a great moment," said Chambers.

"It's a very exciting place to be and everyone can see that from the outside. Things are happening here and it's definitely moving in the right direction.

"For me, it was a no-brainer to join a great club. It was the right thing for me to do."

Chambers had been at Arsenal since joining them from Southampton in 2014.

He replaces Axel Tuanzebe, whose loan from Manchester United ended earlier this month to allow him to join Italian side Napoli.

Bruno Guimaraes set to undergo medical with Newcastle on Friday ahead of £33m transfer from Lyon

Bruno Guimaraes is set to undergo a medical on Friday ahead of completing a move to Newcastle.

Guimaraes will take a medical in his homeland of Brazil after Newcastle agreed a package worth in the region of £33m plus add-ons with French club Lyon to sign the midfielder.

Arsenal were among a number of clubs interested in signing Guimaraes, who has also been watched closely by Manchester United and PSG, but Eddie Howe's side are now on the verge of clinching the 24-year-old's signature.

Guimaraes has made 25 appearances in all competitions for Lyon this season, registering six assists. He has three caps for the Brazil national team.

Liverpool are considering making a late £45m move to sign Luis Diaz from Porto, who are also in talks with Tottenham for the forward.

The Colombia international winger was a target for the summer after coming up against the Reds twice already this season in the Champions League, but they may decide to bring plans forward because of Spurs' interest.

Tottenham have been locked in talks with Porto over Diaz this week, with the Premier League club said to be willing to pay up to £46m.

Sources in Portugal suggest Spurs are prepared to offer £37.6m up front for Diaz, with an additional £8.4m in performance-related add-ons.

However, Porto are holding out for a fee of £50.2m for the 25-year-old, who has 16 goals and six assists in 28 games for the Portuguese side this season.

Spurs in Ambrabat talks | PSG close in on Ndombele loan

Spurs want to make at least one signing this month, and according to Sky in Italy they are also in talks to sign Morocco midfielder Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina on loan, with a €16m buy option being discussed.

Paris Saint-Germain are closing in on a deal to sign Ndombele on loan from Spurs, with an option to buy.

Valencia and Everton were also interested in the 25-year-old, but the midfielder looks to favour a return to France.

Ndombele still has three-and-a-half years to run on the contract he signed with Spurs in the summer of 2019, when he joined in a club-record £63m transfer from Lyon.

But after just six starts in the Premier League this season, he has opted for a reunion with the manager that brought him to Spurs, PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Newcastle set to sign midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon

Newcastle United are set to sign Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes after the two clubs agreed a deal in principle.

Reports suggest the fee is 40m euros (£35m) with a further 8m (£6.7m) euros in add-ons.

The Brazilian passed a medical while on international duty in South America with the two clubs finalising details before an announcement is made.

The 24-year old will be Newcastle's third signing of the January transfer window.

The Magpies, who are third bottom in the Premier League, have brought in England full-back Kieran Trippier for £12m and signed striker Chris Wood from Burnley for £25m.

On Friday manager Eddie Howe said Newcastle were "close" to signing a player, taken to mean Guimaraes, and he "didn't imagine that would be the end of our interest in bringing new players" before deadline day on Monday.

On Saturday, the team returned from a training trip to Saudi Arabia and face Everton in their next Premier League game on Tuesday 8 February.

Defensive midfielder Guimaraes would add protection to a backline that has kept only two clean sheets in the Premier League this season.

Transfer news: Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele set for Premier League if he moves in January

Ousmane Dembele is most likely to join a Premier League club if he leaves Barcelona before Monday's deadline.

His representatives Moussa Sissoko and Marco Lichtsteiner are working to find a solution for the winger whose Barcelona contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

The club told Dembele again on Thursday to find another club if he does not want to not sign their previous offer of a new short-term contract with a wage reduction.

Dembele would prefer to stay for the remainder of his current deal but Barcelona have made it clear they want him out now and have even threatened to leave him in the stands if he stays.

The 24-year-old joined the club from Borussia Dortmund for £135m in the summer of 2017 - just weeks after Neymar's world-record move to Paris Saint-Germain - but has struggled with injuries for much of his time in Spain.

Dembele has started just six matches this season with his only goal coming in the Copa del Rey victory at third-tier Linares earlier this month.

Ousmane Dembele: Barcelona forward agrees terms with Paris St-Germain - Guillem Balague

Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele has agreed terms with Paris St-Germain and could move on Monday's transfer deadline day if the two clubs can agree a fee, reports Guillem Balague.

The Spanish club want 20m euros (£16.6m) for the 24-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer.

Barca paid an initial £96.8m for Dembele in 2017 but are now asking him to take a pay cut or leave.

Manchester United and Chelsea also showed interest in a deal for him.

However the Premier League clubs are not expected to be able to challenge PSG for the France winger's signature because of financial fair play restrictions, which would leave them needing to offload players before adding Dembele's wages to their books.

If Dembele does move to Paris before Monday's 23:00 GMT deadline, he will join former Barca team-mate Lionel Messi in the French capital, while also teaming up with international colleague Kylian Mbappe and Brazil superstar Neymar.

Barcelona are keen to offload Dembele in order to sign either Spain and Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, with whom they have a deal agreed, or Arsenal's Gabon forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

There is also a possibility Dembele will move to PSG in a swap deal with Argentina striker Mauro Icardi.

Premier League clubs are preparing for what could be one of the busiest transfer deadline days in recent years, with January spending already far above last year.

The deadline in Europe's major leagues is on Monday, with the English top flight and Football League windows closing at 23:00 GMT.

Premier League clubs have spent about £195m going into deadline day, compared with £70m at the end of January 2021.

So when exactly is the deadline around Europe, who has already moved, what could happen and how can you follow it?

    What could happen?

Newcastle United, who became one of the world's richest clubs after their Saudi Arabia-backed takeover in October, could stay busy as they attempt to build a team that can avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Manager Eddie Howe has agreed the signing of Brighton defender Dan Burn for £13m, which will take their January spending to almost £90m. The Magpies have been linked with a string of other players including Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett and Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah.

Several Premier League teams, including Newcastle, want Jesse Lingard - but Manchester United are reluctant to let him leave.

Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to make their first signings since Antonio Conte took over, having been frustrated by several deals falling through. They are working on deals for two Juventus players - Uruguay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur and Sweden winger Dejan Kulusevski.

Another Juve player has been linked with the Premier League, with Newcastle, Burnley, Everton, Crystal Palace and Leeds United all reported to be interested in Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has not played since early December, is a reported loan target for Barcelona.

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek has agreed to join Frank Lampard's Everton on loan, but the deal has not yet been confirmed, while centre-back Phil Jones has had talks with Ligue 1 side Bordeaux over a temporary move.

Manchester City are expected to confirm a deal for 21-year-old River Plate striker Julian Alvarez, although he is then set to return to the Argentine club on loan.

Other potential moves could see Tanguy Ndombele (Lyon, PSG), Japhet Tanganga (AC Milan) or Dele Alli leave Spurs.

Brentford are also trying to sign free agent Christian Eriksen, while Juventus' former Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata has also been rumoured for a potential return to the Premier League.

Paris St-Germain have agreed terms with Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele, 24, which could spark a move by the Spanish club for Morata, Aubameyang or PSG's Mauro Icardi.

    What has happened so far?

Liverpool made the biggest signing of the window in England on Sunday, with Porto's Colombia winger Luis Diaz joining in a deal worth 45m euros (£37.5m), with a further 15m euros (£12.5m) in potential bonuses.

Newcastle have already sealed Lyon's Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes for £35m with £6.6m in add-ons, Burnley striker Chris Wood for £25m and Atletico Madrid and England right-back Kieran Trippier for £12m.

There have been four other Premier League signings worth £10m or more.

Aston Villa signed Everton left-back Lucas Digne for £25m, while Everton bought two defenders for a combined £27m - Rangers' Nathan Patterson and Dynamo Kyiv's Vitalii Mykolenko.

Wolves made the loan signing of RB Leipzig forward Hwang Hee-chan permanent for £14m.

The biggest signing in Europe came when Juventus signed Fiorentina forward Dusan Vlahovic - who had been a target for several Premier League sides - for an initial £58m.

Aston Villa, Brentford and Southampton all signed goalkeepers on loans or as free agents, while Watford brought in five relatively unknown players - Edo Kayembe, Samir, Hassane Kamara, Maduka Okoye and Samuel Kalu.

Villa also signed Arsenal defender Calum Chambers on a free transfer.

Notable loan deals saw Villa take Barcelona's Philippe Coutinho and send Anwar El Ghazi to Everton, while Wolves signed Portugal Under-21 winger Chiquinho from Estoril for £3m.

Two players to leave the Premier League for La Liga on loan were Adama Traore (Wolves to Barcelona) and Anthony Martial (Manchester United to Sevilla), while United loaned Amad Diallo to Rangers.

    When is the deadline?

The deadline for all of Europe's top leagues is on Monday, 31 January.

The Premier League and English Football League have theirs at 23:00 GMT, with the Scottish Premiership deadline at midnight.

In Germany's Bundesliga it is 17:00, while it is 19:00 in Italy's Serie A, and 23:00 in both Spain's La Liga and France's Ligue 1 (all GMT).

How can I follow across BBC Sport?

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will have a medical at Barcelona after the club agreed a free-transfer signing from Arsenal.

The 32-year-old Gabon striker has not played for the Gunners since a disciplinary breach in December.

He has scored 92 goals in 163 games since a £56m arrival from Borussia Dortmund in 2018.

Barcelona feared the move was dead earlier on transfer deadline day even though Aubameyang had flown to Spain.

He had also been linked with a switch to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.

The former Arsenal captain will sign a one-and-a-half-year deal at the Nou Camp and it will save the Gunners around £15m in wages.

If he departs, it will leave Gunners boss Mikel Arteta with just Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah as his forwards for the remainder of the season.

Aubameyang was sent home early from the Africa Cup of Nations in January because of ongoing health issues.

The striker missed Gabon's draw with Ghana after scans revealed "heart lesions" following a bout of Covid, although later scans gave him the all-clear.

    The story of the deal
Aubameyang got a private jet to take him to Barcelona and the Spanish club had booked a medical for him because it looked like the move was going to happen.

It wasn't related to Ousmane Dembele's departure from the Nou Camp, but if the French forward had gone, Barca would have been able to pay larger wages.

Then, at 6pm, it looked like the move was not going to happen and the financial differences between the two clubs were too big.

This whole affair has been relayed to us almost minute-by-minute by the Barca president Joan Laporta, who is at a Mundo Deportivo awards event. Laporta is in the business of giving hope to the fans and has been describing the situation as it unfolds.

It looked like the transfer wasn't going to happen because the difference in what Barca could afford in wages and the percentage of Aubameyang's wages Arsenal were prepared to pay was too great.

Barcelona had 2m euros (£1.6m) in wages to pay and Aubameyang was happy to accept any payment In the end. Then Arsenal accepted a free transfer. That means the Gabon forward may just get 2m euros this season - rather than the circa 9m euros (£7.5m) he was due at Arsenal - and more later.

Aston Villa have been the most active during this transfer window. As Liverpool and Man City already have strong teams one would not have expected them to bring in too many new faces nonetheless they both did one each. Arsenal lose Aubameyang without bringing anyone in where as Man Utd have been equally bad. Chelsea have been a bit quiet on the final day, Spurs after missing out on Diaz bought in two from Juventus.

Tottenham's Dele Alli joins Everton on permanent deal

Everton have signed Dele Alli from Tottenham on a two-and-a-half-year deal for a fee that could reach £40m.

New Everton boss Frank Lampard made the signing of midfielder Alli a priority and believes he can rebuild a career that has stalled in recent years.

The 25-year-old, who has played 37 times for England, made six appearances under Spurs boss Antonio Conte after the Italian's arrival in November.

The first £10m of his transfer fee will be payable after 20 appearances.

"I'm delighted to have signed for Everton, a huge club with a great fanbase and history," said Alli, who scored 67 goals in 269 games at Spurs.

"I'm eager to get started and can't wait for my first game in an Everton shirt.

"I'm looking forward to helping the team and the opportunity to work with the new manager Frank Lampard."

He is cup-tied for Everton's FA Cup fourth round match against Brentford on Saturday, but could make his debut against Newcastle in the Premier League on 8 February.

Everton were forced to make the deal permanent because their loan quota is full after adding Manchester United's Donny van de Beek to the recent signing of Anwar El Ghazi from Aston Villa.

Alli, who won the most recent of his England caps in 2019, joined Tottenham from MK Dons in 2015.

He scored 10 goals in 33 Premier League games during his debut campaign before hitting 18 in the 2016-17 season, earning him two PFA Young Player of the Year awards.

Having been a regular under Mauricio Pochettino, however, Alli fell out of favour following Jose Mourinho's appointment, starting only seven league games last season.

The attacking midfielder started the opening six Premier League games of the current campaign during Nuno Espirito Santo's brief spell in charge, but struggled for game time under Conte.
