    [VIDEOS] Dewald Brevis (AB 2.0)

He's supposed to be the next big thing in South African cricket and as the title suggests many feel that he could go on to be the next AB de Villiers.

He's currently playing in the Under 19 World Cup and has scored 65 versus India and then 104 against Uganda.

    Possibly one to watch.

Even AB was not AB when he started he only started to become AB 360 well in to his career .I would recommend the young man to fist focus on building a good solid technical base like his hero did and then expand his repotore

A good T20 prospect but for Tests and ODIs, need to learn several other aspects of batting.

If I am not wrong, he bowls leg spin too and is seen more of an all rounder than just a proper batsman.

Obviously, many players who used to bowl in their U-19s ended up becoming specialist batsman only so only time will tell how it stacks for him.

It definitely seems like he has copied a lot of the aspects of his batting on AB.

Exciting prospect. Always good to see potentially good, young cricketers.

Well done to him. Unfortunately he is a South African born in the wrong generation. It will be hard to shine as a SA's player over the next decade.

You really think he’ll play for South Africa? 😆

ECB are probably arranging all the documents for him to get a British Citizenship.

IPL has its eyes on him already.

A day after his picture donning the old Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) jersey went viral all over social media, South Africa's ‘Baby AB’, Dewald Brevis, left speculations brewing after yet another video went viral on Twitter where he is heard talking about his love for IPL and names his favourite franchise and cricketers.

In the video shared during the U19 World Cup 2022, Brevis said that he has been a big fan of the IPL and wants to play the tournament for his favourite franchise, RCB, as it has two of his favourite cricketers - Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

“For me one of the biggest dream is to play for the Proteas. I'm such a big fan of IPL and I would love to play the IPL for RCB. I love RCB because Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers was there. I'm big fan of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers," he said.

Brevis has been one of the most talked-bout players in the ongoing U19 World Cup on West Indies after fans found a striking resemblance between his batting technique and that of South African legend De Villiers, hence the name 'Baby AB'. And the 18-year-old has been living up to the expectations with his batting scores as well. In four matches so far, Brevis has scored four consecutive half-century scores with his figures reading - 65 against India, 104 against Uganda, 96 against Ireland and 97 against England.

Brevis is also a leg-spinner and has picked six wickets in the tournament as well.

South Africa’s young superstar Dewald Brevis took the tournament by storm, scoring 506 runs in six innings at an average of 84.33.

The brilliant Brevis showed off his enormous ability right from the start of the tournament with a fine 65 against India, accompanied with 2/43 from his useful off-spin.

And the 18-year-old very nearly followed up that knock with a hat-trick of centuries, hitting 104 against Uganda before falling four runs short of a ton against Ireland and three runs short in the loss to England.

Brevis’ only failure in the tournament was a disappointing six against Sri Lanka, but he finished his campaign on a high with an outstanding 138 against Bangladesh to steer his side to a successful run chase in the seventh-place playoff.

Reasons for comparisons between Brevis and AB de Villiers were clear from the moment he took to the crease against India, with the player having clearly modelled his style on the South African legend.

But there are worse players to emulate, and on the evidence of his displays in the Caribbean, Brevis has every chance of also making it in the international game.

    BREVIS' RECORD-BREAKING NUMBERS

    65 and 2/43 vs India
    104 and 2/18 vs Uganda
    96 and 0/13 vs Ireland
    97 and 2/40 vs England
6 and 1/52 vs Sri Lanka
    138 and 0/34 vs Bangladesh

    WHAT THEY SAID

South Africa coach Shukri Conrad: “Dewald Brevis is a player who’s on everyone’s lips. He’s AB de Villers 2.0.”

ICC pundit Natalie Germanos: “He’s been absolutely brilliant. I’d heard a lot about him coming into the tournament, and seen a little bit of him as well. We all know he looks like AB de Villiers, he plays like him, strokes the ball just like him. He’s been brilliant through the tournament, whether it be with the ball, in the field, with the bat. He’s an absolute star, and for me – no pressure on the youngster – I really feel this is one for the future for South Africa.”

ICC commentator Alan Wilkins: “It’s almost as if he premeditates and says ‘this bowler’s going to go’. He plays these audacious shots, he’s got touch, but he goes big down the ground. He’s a formidable force for South African cricket, and I think he’s going to go all the way.”

DEWALD BREVIS IN HIS OWN WORDS

“I think I was born with a passion to play cricket and a love for the game, and I really want to make a difference with cricket," Brevis told the ICC.

“As a youngster, me and my brother always played backyard cricket, he had such a big ambition also for the game, there was lots of passion, lots of laughter, lots of tears.

"My mum always told me to believe that I was going to do something in sports, and cricket is what I want to do, that’s what keeps me driven.

“In my era growing up everyone knows AB de Villiers, he’s been such a role model for me from a very young age.

"Growing up watching him at SuperSport Park for the first time live, on TV, I always loved the way he played, 360 degrees, taking on the bowlers, being aggressive.

“I’ve chatted to AB quite a lot, it’s a special relationship, something that I keep close to my heart and don’t really talk much about, but he’s given me some advice and small things to improve my game.

“I love a lot of shots, but if I had to choose I believe it’d be playing a straight drive or straight over the top, but 360… I like playing 360!”

Another fine knock from Brevis today, one of the only positives in this years IPL for Mumbai so far. 49 of 25 balls including four 6s in a row against Chahar. Definetly a future star in the making.

Dewald Brevis has lit up the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season and he has given some impressive performances. In the game against Punjab Kings, Brevis scored a quickfire 49 and he even smashed Rahul Chahar for four consecutive sixes. Then, against Lucknow Super Giants, he smashed 31 off 13 deliveries and till the time he was at the crease, one could not take their eyes off him. The young Proteas batter had earlier set the stage on fire at the ICC U-19 World Cup as he amassed 506 runs. The batter has now revealed the two players he has always idolised.

Speaking on the MI show on Star Sports, Brevis said, "I think lot of people know AB de Villiers, and I look up to him since I was a youngster and love the way he played and how he goes about his game. Also Sachin Tendulkar, always idolised him because the way he plays and the way he lives about his mottos and how he goes about the things in life."

"I also like Virat Kohli and as a bowler Shane Warne, I look up to him because I'm also a leg spinner so that's why," he stated further.

Speaking about this year's IPL, Dewald Brevis said, "I'm so excited, for me I really look forward to spending time with every single player in the team, learning from them and when i get the opportunity, use it mostly just to learn, play the game and to enjoy it and keep it simple."

Mumbai Indians have lost their opening six matches in the ongoing IPL 2022 season. On Saturday, Mumbai Indians suffered a 18-run loss against Lucknow Super Giants.

In 2014, Mumbai Indians had lost their first five matches, but they managed to progress to the playoffs that season.

Dewald Brevis has already made an impression at the 2022 IPL and has been tipped to be fast-tracked into South Africa’s XI for the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup later this year.

But it was “Baby AB’s” stunning showing at the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup earlier this year that sped up his journey to the top of the game.

If eyebrows were raised when the Indian Premier League’s Mumbai Indians splashed out Rs 3 crore to bring an 18-year-old Brevis to the franchise, then the doubters cannot have been paying attention.

The South African teenager immediately showed his class, slotting into the IPL starting XI at number three for Mumbai and displaying his outrageous range of shots and ability to score eye-wateringly fast, stroking 29 from 19 balls in his first IPL outing against Kolkata Knight Riders.

And Brevis has barely looked back, slamming five maximums in a 25-ball 49 that almost helped his side pull off an unlikely run chase against Punjab Kings, and hammering 31 from 13 balls against Lucknow Super Giants.

But a pair of low scores saw Brevis suddenly on the outer in Mumbai as Indians coach Mahela Jayawardena shuffled his side in an attempt to find the winning formula.

But Brevis' star is still on the rise and the now 19-year-old is tipped to be fast-tracked into South Africa’s full T20I side ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

But nobody who watched the brilliant Brevis light it up at the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in January and February will have been surprised by how the past few months have gone for the boy from Johannesburg.

Brevis was comfortably the top-scorer at the tournament, hitting 506 runs in six innings, including two centuries as well as a 96 against Ireland and a 97 against eventual runners-up England.

    WHAT THEY SAID

South Africa Men’s U19 coach Shukri Conrad: “Dewald Brevis is a player who’s on everyone’s lips. He’s AB de Villers 2.0.”

ICC pundit Natalie Germanos: “We all know he looks like AB de Villiers, he plays like him, strokes the ball just like him. He’s an absolute star. I really feel this is one for the future for South Africa.”

“I think I was born with a passion to play cricket and a love for the game, and I really want to make a difference with cricket," Brevis told the ICC.

“In my era growing up everyone knows AB de Villiers, he’s been such a role model for me from a very young age.

“I’ve chatted to AB quite a lot, it’s a special relationship, something that I keep close to my heart and don’t really talk much about, but he’s given me some advice and small things to improve my game.”
