Should be a good entertainment, but the final dates clash with PSL start date.

Let’s see who eventually takes part.

Looking at the Asian XI I would play

    Jayasuriya
    Dilshan
    Hafeez
    Yousuf
    Misbah
    Afghan
    Afridi
    Gul
    Murli
    Akhtar
    Vaas

In the climax of the Hollywood musical, Mary Poppins Returns, the eponymous English nanny turns the clock, the famed Big Ben of London, back by five minutes. Miss Poppins, played by the delightful Emily Blunt, had the magical powers to do that.

Over the next few days at the Al Amerat Cricket Stadium, the clock will turn several times over in the inaugural edition of the Legends League Cricket. The three teams – India Maharaja, Asia Lions and World Giants – feature some of the all-time cricketing greats.

The teams will play each other twice before the final on January 29.

The Indian team includes Virender Sehwag, who is expected to join after missing the first few games, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Mohammed Kaif, Irfan Pathan and Nayan Mongia.

The Asia Lions comprises men from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. It features Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi, Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas, Mohammed Hafeez, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mohammed Yousuf, Misbah ul Haq, Habibul Bashar and Ashgar Afghan.

The World Giants are Kevin Pietersen, Jonty Rhodes, Brett Lee, Daren Sammy, Imran Tahir, Herschelle Gibbs, Daniel Vettori, Morne Morkel, Brendan Taylor, Kevin O’Brien and Monty Panesar.

Some players have only recently retired and look fit enough for the franchise leagues. Many of them may have bid goodbye a while ago and taken up coaching and commentating jobs, but they could still replay from memory and produce those scintillating strokes and magic balls.

The matches will be aired live by Sony Ten 1 and Sony Ten 3.

Shoaib Akhtar can still bowl quick: Misbah-ul-Haq

Asia Lions skipper excited to see so many legends in the tournament

He may have crossed 40, but Mohammed Kaif believes he still could do something on the field. “I can still move around a bit,” said Kaif on the eve of the opening match of the Legends League Cricket. “Watch me on TV,” he added.

Kaif, one of the finest fielders of his time, is leading the India Maharajas in the absence of Virender Sehwag in the first few matches. “He will join later,” said Kaif about Sehwag.

Kaif’s men take on Asia Lions at the Al Amerats Cricket Stadium on Thursday in the first match of the 10-day tournament. He said it would not be a walk in the park for anyone.

“When I was part of such a league a few months ago, I saw the passion and love for the game in the retired players,” he said. “The commitment was there.”

Kaif said he was happy that the organisers were able to bring players from all over the world. “It is a great effort,” he said. “Yes, fans love to watch India and Pakistan playing each other. I hope we could get some fine moments here (Pakistan players are part of Asia Lions).”

Misbah-ul-Haq is leading the Asian side. “It is good to see so many legends in this tournament,” he said. “We hope to entertain people.”

The former Pakistan captain said he was looking forward to playing against some of his former rivals from India.

“Playing with each other is fun and it is also very competitive whether it is Legends League or wherever we play,” he said.He added he was impressed with the venue here. “It is a scenic ground,” he said. “And the facilities are wonderful.”

Misbah said Shoaib Akhtar was still quick. “He can still bowl at 140kmph plus,” he said.

The Delhi High Court has refused to stay 'Legends League Cricket' on a lawsuit by a person who claimed to have conceptualised having a tournament with retired legendary players, saying said that no one can claim copyright over the game of cricket which has several permutations and combinations of “innings” and “overs”. Justice Asha Menon said that plaintiff Samir Kasal -- who contended that the defendants i.e. organisers of 'Legends League Cricket' misappropriated his idea-- failed to make out a prima facie case for grant of any interim relief and that none of the features of his concept reflected original thought.

The plaintiff's ideas have been in the public domain for long and “none can claim an exclusive right to any of these ideas”, the judge added.

The first edition of 'Legends League Cricket' began on January 20 in Oman.

Justice Menon further said that the format of 'Legends League Cricket' was “significantly different” from that of the plaintiff and the defendant organisers were not copying any idea or concept of the plaintiff.

The cricketers cannot be injuncted from playing for the defendants or any other organizer, as the plaintiff can claim no such exclusive right, she stated.

To protect the interest of the plaintiff, the judge nonetheless directed defendant organisers to “maintain clear accounts of their earnings and expenditure in respect of the match/matches that are being organized at Oman (UAE) and file the same in court within one month of the conclusion of the league matches”.

The court issued summons to the organisers on the lawsuit by Kansal and said if an order of stay is passed at this stage, loss to the defendants, the players, the sponsors, the media partners and the public at large cannot be compensated.

“To say that because the plaintiff conceptualized a league match with retired cricketers in a 'T-10 Test Format' to be played at venues where there is Indian diaspora, and that being his idea, had become his exclusive right, is to stretch it too far to claim a right to seek an injunction against the 'Legends League Cricket' tournament organized by the defendants,” said the court in its order on January 19.

“In this case, the fundamental similarity will be the 'game of cricket' and no one can claim a copyright to the 'game of cricket'. Several permutations and combinations in the format of playing the 'game of cricket' have been evolved over a period of centuries. Therefore, it is reasonable that there can also be no copyright in the evolution of cricket over a period of time, from a '5-Day Test Match Series', to the latest of 'T-20 Matches/One-Dayers'. Any such permutations and combinations would involve “innings” and “overs”,” it added.

The plaintiff, represented by senior advocate Sandeep Sethi and advocate Srivats Kaushal, argued before the court that he was a well-known person in the sports industry and had worked with the defendant organisers on holding a limited-over cricket tournament with two teams namely, “Asia XI” and “World XI” made up of world cricket legends who have since retired.

Mohammad Hafeez has been one of cricket’s most durable men. The Pakistan all-rounder was 41 when he announced his retirement from the international game early this month.

His last match for Pakistan was the T20I was the semifinal against Australia in the World Cup at Dubai last November. He soon found himself playing in a tournament for the international cricketers.

Turning out for Asia Lions at the Legends League Cricket, he played a splendid cameo to help his side chase down a daunting target set by World Giants at the Al Amerat Cricket Stadium here on Friday night. His 13-ball 27 was what the Lions needed after the second-wicket stand of 88 between the Sri Lankan duo of Tillakaratne Dilshan (52, 32b) and Upul Tharanga (63, 43b).

Shortly after his team scored a six-wicket win with four balls to spare, Hafeez said he was happy to be part of the league. “I personally enjoyed the game to play with the (former top) stars of world cricket,” he said.

“Sharing the dressing room with them was really special. (As is) having World Cup winning Sri Lankan skipper Arjuna Ranatunga as a coach. As a child, I grew up watching him.”

He feels the league is a wonderful initiative. “I really want to congratulate the organisers on bringing (all the cricketers) under one roof,” he said. “As a fan I am very happy.”

Kevin O’Brien could not have been as happy, though. The Irish all-rounder’s 95 off 46 balls went in vain, as the Giants’ 205 for seven was overtaken by Lions.

“It was a very good wicket and I enjoyed batting out there,” said O’Brien. “The standard of cricket here is good. The batters are batting well and the bowlers are putting in good efforts.”

Former South Africa spinner Imran Tahir turned out be an unlikely match-winner, with the bat, as he guided the World Giants to a three-wicket win against the Indian Maharajas in the ongoing Legends League Cricket (LLC) at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Muscat, Oman. Tahir, who is known for his bowling rather than batting, smoked five sixes and three boundaries on his way to a 19-ball 52 as the World Giants chased down a mammoth target despite a middle-order collapse.

Tahir hit three sixes in the 18th over, which was bowled by Manpreet Goni, before hitting Naman Ojha for two sixes in the final over of the match.

After being put on to bat first, the Indian Maharajas innings got off to the worst possible start, losing the wickets Wasim Jaffer and S Badrinath, as both the batters failed to trouble the scorers.

However, wicketkeeper-batter Naman Ojha led the charge of the Maharajas, scoring 140 off 69 balls, including 15 boundaries and nine sixes.

Ojha and Mohammad Kaif (53) added 187 runs for the third wickets as the side managed to post a total of 209 for three in 20 overs.

In reply, the Giants got off to a flying start with Kevin Pietersen scoring a fine fifty at the top of the order.

However, Pietersen's wicket in the 9th over saw a change in momentum as the Maharajas took wickets in regular intervals, reducing the Giants to 101 for five.

But Tahir turned the tables with his knock of 52 as the Giants chased down the target with three wickets and as many balls to spare.

It's strange watching Shoaib run in and bowl at 110 km/hr, he should not be playing

This is such a strange concept given than many of the players are still active whereas others are long retired.

Its interesting watching a few overs on youtube but I don't think I could watch a full game.

How the hell do these leagues make money?

I highly doubt if the league would make any profit in year 1.

Its a great concept though. Akhtar & Lee would have been a sight to watch 8-9 years ago.
