After winning the Ashes 4-0, Australia have now become the number one ranked Test team in the world. Meanwhile, after suffering a 1-2 series loss against South Africa, India has dropped to the third spot while New Zealand has held onto its second position.

New Zealand had played out a 1-1 series draw against Bangladesh.

Australia has 119 points at the top and the Pat Cummins-led side is three points ahead of third-placed India.

After the series win against India, South Africa has jumped to the fifth spot in the ICC Test Rankings. England is in the fourth position with 101 points.

Pakistan has gone down one spot to sixth place, whereas Sri Lanka, West Indies, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, and Ireland have retained their positions.

And even in Australia they lost an entire series to a team with Washington Sundar and Natarajan.

England made them look better than they are.

    Well done.

They may get dethroned after their tour of Pakistan. I think Pakistan may win that series 2-1 or 3-0.

The leadership of Cummins is something that could turn out to be very impressive. I think Australia will do better than many are expecting on their travels.

They deserve it because in this era, for the most part, the team which is most impressive at home tends to be the best because when the away tours come, very few do well.

I think its a breath of fresh air to seeing a high profile fast bowling spearhead lead the team, who was the last one before him in world cricket ? Id have to go all the way back to Wasim Akram ?

A fast bowler tends to have a unique perspective so his style of leadership should reflect that and I think this move will bring the best out of Australia, especially overseas

How are pakistan going to win without a single good spinner against australia ?

Pakistans batting lineup also is poor , so even a drawn series against australia will be a big achievement for pakistan.

I think you are in it for a surprise...being aware of local conditions is a huge plus for the home team

secondly, what is nathan lyon going to do in karachi? pakistan has sajid khan, nauman ali - who arent as good as nathan lyon but familiar with domestic pitches

and dont under estimate pakistani batsmen on low pitches - their problem has always been bouncy and drop in pitches of australia and south africa

If you prepare turning tracks like India , and play two specialist and one part time spinner , Aussies will be dead.

Yes, their last away win was in New Zealand in 2016. The rankings are meaningless if a side that refuses to tour away isn't penalized.

Pakistan pitches won't be like India who just create dust bowls from the first ball.

Rank at one specific time is not very informative.
The ranking trend over a long period is very informative. It's meaningful.

India is only 3 points behind Aus here despite playing in NZ, Aus, SA, and Eng in the last few years. Aus has not even stepped out of Aus in the last 2 years. It won't surprise me to see Aus rank 1 being short-lived and India taking the top spot again.

Australia have 3 tours in Asia in the next 12 months I think- Pakistan, SL & India.

So yes, current rankings reflect a strong home showing, nothing more.

We'll know more about where the teams stand in a year, with an almost post Kohli India, a possibly resurgent Australia & NZ losing Taylor but discovering a strong opener in Latham & a possible unicorn allrounder in Jamieson.

Yah, post-Kohli India, Resurgent Aus, and NZ -- The next 3-4 years will be interesting.

So, the world no 1,2 and 4 teams are coming to Pakistan this year.

Hopefully Pakistan doesn't provide them the pitches which suit them as its a great chance for Pakistan to win all 3 series and improve their rankings.

If Pakistan win all 3 they'll have as much claim to be a top test side as anyone else. Huge task.

If they can win 2 of those= probably a top 4 Test team again (at the expense of England).

Disagree with these rankings. India are the number 1 side in the world and deserve to be there based on how they've performed home and away in recent years

They beat England and Pakistan away from home during the last 3 years, drew with Sri Lanka away also. Heavy defeats against Australia and India count against them.

I keep NZ in the mix due to hope, but I don't rate NZ that high. Mainly due to not having noteworthy performances in places like India, Aus, and SA for a very long time.

    Since 2000,

NZ has played 39 tests in Ind/SA/Aus - Won 1 test.

Not winning series is another thing, but come on, one test win in 40 tests. I know a different set of players and a lot going on with Jamie, but I need to see some actual performance and not just the talk about the potential. Someone may point out that the old record does not matter, but since 2016, they have played 10 tests. Zero win and lost 8 and hung for a draw in one due to poor light taking away half a day of play.

So NZ is in the mix for me, but it's me hoping here rather than NZ's actual performance. If NZ wins 5-6 tests in Aus, India, and SA in the next few years then it won't look that bad.

    +1

    Since 2016,

W/L away: India 1.2 & everyone else in 0.5-0.6 range or below.
W/L overall: India is 2.4 & the second-best is 1.7 for NZ despite NZ playing heavily at home.

But that's the past. I do think post-Kohli, India may go in some transition phase and decline a bit.
