With the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia only a few months away, both West Indies and England will view the five-match series as the ideal platform to get the preparations underway.

With the T20 World Cup coming up soon, West Indies are currently in the middle of a rebuilding phase, trying to build up a squad of players to compete at the tournament in Australia. The initial start has been shaky with their 0-3 series loss in Pakistan. The ODI series at home against Ireland also did not go to plan against Ireland, culminating in a 2-1 loss. But skipper Kieron Pollard will keep faith in the current crop of players and a series against England, one of the best white-ball teams in the world will be a big opportunity.

Eoin Morgan has stated that this series will be a chance to introduce some fresh faces in the set-up as they try to recover from the disappointment of the 2021 T20 World Cup in UAE and Oman. The current squad in West Indies will be a mix of some established campaigners and some faces who will have a lot on the line in order to force their way into the reckoning. The visitors though will still fancy their chances of clinching a victory in the five-match series as the build-up to the tournament in Australia begins.


Remember the last time

The two teams last faced off in a T20I series in March 2019, back in the Caribbean. The visitors were completely dominant throughout the three-match series, completing a 3-0 whitewash with some comprehensive performances. They won the first match by four wickets, the second by 137 runs, and the third by eight wickets.

Jonny Bairstow top-scored in the series with 117 runs while Chris Jordan ended up as the leading wicket-taker with six scalps.

Kieron Pollard (West Indies captain): "We need to improve the way we play because our batting has definitely been a problem for us. The good thing is that we have some new faces in the group, guys looking to make a name for themselves in our international scene. It's like we are starting from scratch, so we need to do the basics right. Play the situation of the game and analyse, assess, and make the right decisions, depending on what the team requires at that point in time."

Eoin Morgan (England captain): "The whole tour is one where the development of our game is more important than a series win. We've gone through this process before, and identifying the level of intensity, and our performance is far more important than the result. Normally the result looks after itself, and going through that process has kept the identity of the team strong. The mantra in which we play has created a very healthy environment, and hopefully, guys that come in can feel comfortable enough to try and apply that."

Just Billings. I assume we'll line up something like: Roy, Salt, Vince, Livingstone, Morgan, Billings, Moeen, Jordan, Rashid, Mahmood, Mills although there'll probably be some rotation throughout the series to give everyone in the squad a game or 2, especially among the bowlers with 2 sets of back to back games.

Holder-led bowling attack dominates in Barbados masterclass

Career-best T20 figures for Jason Holder lifted the West Indies to an early 1-0 series lead over England at the Kensington Oval.

The hosts started the rot with the wicket of Jason Roy in the first over of play at Kensington Oval, and didn't look back in a conquering nine-wicket win.

Pollard's men were unrelenting with the ball and in the field, restricting the tourists to 26/4 in the Powerplay. Holder claimed Tom Banton and Moeen Ali in successive deliveries, as Sheldon Cottrell (2/30 off four overs) made his mark at the other end.

Cottrell was the man to remove Roy, and the left-armer picked up James Vince (14 from 12 balls), who threatened to launch English escape plans.

The fourth wicket brought Sam Billings to the middle, just a week removed from his Test debut in Hobart against Australia. The wicket-keeper batter was unable to hang around with captain Eoin Morgan, missing an Akeal Hosein delivery on the charge and stumped for just two.

On top of the West Indies' execution of plans, England's batting capitulation was as much down to unforced errors at crucial moments, with a poor call running between wickets the reason for Liam Dawson's downfall. Misjudging a quick single, Dawson fell to his knees in an attempt to skip back into his ground, with captain Pollard finishing a simple under-armed throw to Nicholas Pooran for the run out.

Morgan would pick out Pollard at cover an over later, and at 49/7, were staring down the barrel of their lowest ever total of 80.

England finally found a partnership through Chris Jordan (28) and Adil Rashid's (22) lower-order exploits, and the pair managed to move the score towards three figures.

Jordan fell to the spin of Fabian Allen in the late stages looking to up the run-rate further towards six an over, and Rashid managed to stick around until the final over, ticking over the century total.

Holder quelled any lusty late blows, removing Saqib Mahmood (5) and Rashid in successive deliveries to finish with his scarcely believable figures.

Any doubts of a nervy West Indies chase were put to bed, as the opening pair of Brandon King and Shai Hope moved through the Powerplay unscathed, and registered a half-century partnership.

Hope fell to a clever piece of Rashid bowling soon after, but it proved merely a consolation wicket as the hosts ran off into the sunset.

King was joined by Pooran, as the pair eased home with 17 balls to spare.

England were hammered in the first match at Barbados last night, will they do better today?

The pitch yesterday was a bit spicy with a lot of pace and bounce. Jason Holder took full advantage of the movement on offer and his wickets were decisive in the victory as England couldn't recover. Morgan later commented on how the side was taken aback by the pitch.

England seem to be underprepared so it's a good chance for the West Indies to win this series. A win here will go some way in raising confidence in the Windies camp after the disastrous T20 World Cup campaign in the UAE.
