India reach Stumps on 338-7 in the 5th Test after Pant's stunning 146
England have announced their playing XI for the rescheduled fifth Test against India at Edgbaston starting Friday, 1 July.
James Anderson has been declared fit for the Test against India at Edgbaston. The veteran star sustained an ankle injury that kept him out of the final Test against New Zealand but a well-rested Anderson is fit and raring to go against India.
Sam Billings will don the gloves behind the stumps for England in the absence of Ben Foakes. Foakes was in a race against time to be fit for the Test after testing positive for Covid-19 in the middle of the third Test against New Zealand in Headingley.
Playing XI: Alex Lees, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (c), Sam Billings (w), Matthew Potts, Stuart Broad, Jack Leach, James Anderson.
England are trailing 2-1 in the series against India currently but the current team is a whole different side than the one that was in disarray a year ago.

India have named Jasprit Bumrah as their captain for the rescheduled fifth Test against England in Edgbaston after Rohit Sharma was ruled out.
Bumrah will lead India in Edgbaston in what will be the first time he will lead the national side in any format. He is also set to make history as the first pacer to captain India in Tests since the legendary Kapil Dev in 1987. Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain.
Addressing the pre-match press conference, Bumrah said on being named the captain, "It is a big achievement, big honour. It was my dream to play Test cricket. It is a big achievement that I have gotten the honour to lead the country. It is the biggest achievement of my career. I am very happy."
Rohit tested positive for Covid-19 last week during the warm-up game against Leicestershire. Though he played the first innings, he was forced into isolation after testing positive and did not take part in the second innings.
"Mr Rohit Sharma, Captain, Indian Cricket Team is ruled out of the rescheduled fifth Test against England to be played from Friday," a BCCI release said. "Rohit underwent a RAT Test on Thursday morning and returned a positive result for COVID-19.
"The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Mr Jasprit Bumrah as captain for the upcoming Test and Mr Rishabh Pant as his deputy."
Rohit's absence will be a massive blow for India. Apart from being the captain, Rohit had shown tremendous form during the first part of the series last year, scoring 368 runs, including a century in the fourth Test.
India have announced Mayank Agarwal as cover for Rohit. Given there is no quarantine for international travellers, Agarwal has already travelled to England and has linked up with the Test squad.
Having only made his Test debut in 2018, Bumrah has quickly become one of the most important players in India's red-ball sides. He has played just 29 Tests, but is already the leader of the pace attack, and occupies the No.3 position in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Bowler's rankings.
He was the vice-captain in the ODI leg of India's tour of South Africa, with KL Rahul captaining in Rohit's absence. He was also the deputy to Rohit during the Test and T20I series against Sri Lanka.
Should India win or draw in Birmingham, they would secure their first Test series victory in England since 2007. There are also crucial ICC World Test Championship points at stake, with India currently sitting at No.3 in the standings.
However, England have looked a much-improved side under the leadership of the new captain-coach duo of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, as evidenced by their 3-0 victory over reigning ICC World Test Championship holders New Zealand.
The Test will begin in Edgbaston on 1 July.

England should decimate India here.
They have got the momentum they have got the players in the form.
Zak Crawley is a weak link.Ben foakes is a big miss both with the bat and gloves.

England should steamroll India considering the form that they were in against the Kiwis. But we never know how will they fare against a different opposition.

Don’t write off India or underestimate them. They could easily win this. England are in the early stages of recovery within their Test setup and they still have a lot of work to do.

If we win, we would be the undisputed best team of this generation and best team on current form with test series wins in Australia, England, Sri Lanka and West Indies and not lost anything at home.
Australia drew in England, yet to beat India and lost last time in South Africa in the sandpaper series and also have lost home series to India and South Africa.
New Zealand, England, South Africa and Pakistan are clearly behind.

Some facts going into this match :-
Joe Root is the leading run scorer with 564 runs in this series. 2nd and 3rd are Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, both not playing this game. Root is probably gonna take the player of series irrespective of the result.
Ollie Robinson is the leading wicket taker with 21 wickets. Jasprit Bumrah is a close second with 18 wickets at a better average of 20. Anderson has 15 test wickets at 24.

Would be interesting to watch how Eng apply their batting tactics of taking it to the opponent against Indian attack which has more pace and more variety then NZ offered in the series.

Everyone is aware why they ran away but I think Brits want to extract the truth from Shastri's mouth.
We could have won the game and series last year when the momentum was with us. Against this England side and that too with our best batsman (KL Rahul) out...literally no chance here.
If it rains out...we will win the series though

Chalk and cheese comparison. England NEVER went to Pakistan in the 1st place. India was there, played 4 test matches, was roaming around all over the country..going to book launch etc and then left overnight for Dubai to play IPL keeping authorities uninformed.
Both situtations are very different.

Fast medium? Bumrah can bowl up to 150 if he wants to. Same as rabada who has slowed down recently
Only starcy bowls 140-145 consistently on average. Lockie is more in the clinic.
New zealnd have total trundlers.
Nortje was quick. Post injury not the same.
We have ? Naseem is 140-145. Shaheen is fast medium. Rest are bang average.

I'd rather we get all them 20 sticks bowling at 140+ or thereabouts rather than be a 145kmph + show pony with nothing to show for in the W column. Jazz boom, Mo Shami & siraj service us wonderfully well - no qualms on that. However, i do wish Umraan was somewhere in the mix. His extra pace wold give our attack a different dimension. Like Shane Bond did to NZ in the early 2000's
