[VIDEOS] Bangladesh Premier League 2023
In the backdrop of Pakistan Cricket Board cancelling their ODI tour of the West Indies, Bangladesh Premier League's seven franchises got a much-needed boost as far as recruiting foreign cricketers is concerned. The tour was scheduled to take place during the last week of January 2023.
As a result of that tour being cancelled, Pakistan's players are expected to play in the BPL after partaking in the home series against New Zealand that ends on January 15. Incidentally, the BPL is scheduled to be held between January 6 and February 16.
Earlier, the BPL governing council was contemplating on changing the dates of the tournament from 2024 onwards in order to avoid clashes with other leagues like the Big Bash League, UAE's ILT20 and South Africa's T20 league.
A franchise official, on request of anonymity, noted that they are expecting to have Pakistan's players in the BPL considering the fact that their "players are not in demand" in the South African T20 league or UAE's ILT20.
"Look, what we understand is that Pakistani players are not in demand either in South Africa T20 (league) or in UAE's ILT20 as most of the owners in those competition are IPL owners," the official said.
An official of the Rangpur Riders set-up also told that they have heard Pakistan Super League might be shifted by three to four days. In that case, they are expecting their recruit from Pakistan, Mohammad Nawaz, to be available for the whole duration of BPL.
Apart from Nawaz, Riders so far have signed Shoaib Malik. They have also picked all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai from Afghanistan along with Sri Lankan cricketers - Pathum Nissanka and Jeffrey Vandersay. Although the participation of the Sri Lanka duo is subject to their availability, as India could tour Sri Lanka for three ODIs around the time BPL would be held.
Defending Champions Comilla Victorians too seem to be excited with the present scenario as they have bolstered their squad by roping in the Pakistan trio -Mohammad Rizwan, Hasan Ali and Shaheen Afridi- for the upcoming tournament. It is understood that other franchises are keeping Pakistan's cricketers at the top of their buying list.
BPL Franchises: Fortune Barishal Sports Ltd (Barishal), Mindtree Limited (Khulna), Progoti Green Auto Rice Mills Ltd (Dhaka), Future Sports Bangladesh Limited (Sylhet), Bashundhara Group's Toggi Sports Limited (Rangpur), Delta Sports Ltd (Chattogram) Comilla Legends Limited (Comilla).

I have never watched a single BPL season.
It is low-quality and boring (then again, almost all T20 leagues are like that to me).

Mera salam hai to the Bangladesh Premier League. In an era where the entire world has turned its back as Pakistan drowns in a flood and refuses to hire Pakistanis including Pakistani cricketers, BPL has hired Pakistani cricketers.

The icon player of Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 franchise Sylhet Strikers, Mashrafe bin Mortaza said he would give his all to help his side clinch the premier T20 tournament of the country for the first time.
The former Bangladesh captain said this during the logo unveiling ceremony of the Strikers, who will take part in the upcoming ninth edition of BPL under the new ownership of Future Sports Bangladesh Limited.
“I am confident I will give my 100% effort. I will try my best Inshallah…it is true Sylhet have never been champions. Sometimes they played well, other times they didn’t. Therefore since the beginning of our talks, we have discussed that the team management should be strong, along with the core of the team. We have tried our best. Now it all depends what players we get in the auction. Discipline and on-field performance, these things matter. With that said, we can understand better when we play as a team,” said Mashrafe to the media at Hotel Sonargaon Wednesday.
The 43-day long BPL will get underway on January 5 next year with the grand finale scheduled for February 16.
In search of their maiden title, Sylhet has undergone a number of ownership changes in the past and Mashrafe urged the new owners to keep faith on the team hailing from the famous tea garden with an eye on the long run.
“We are hopeful, everything is going according to our plans Alhamdulilah. The owners tried hard to construct the team with their budget. We have seen big ambitions before, but they could never stay for a long time. But I am optimistic the new owners will be there for a long time and help Bangladesh cricket in the process,” said Mashrafe.
Sarwar Chowdhury, chairman of Future Sports Bangladesh Ltd, is the owner of the Strikers while Helal been Yousuf is the managing director.
The five directors of the side are Jaglul Huda Mitu, Md Naeem Khandaker, Imam Hasan, Rajib Khan and Saifur Raja Chowdhury.
The names of the four foreign cricketers – Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir, Sri Lanka all-rounders Thisara Perera and Kamindu Mendis and Lankan batter Dhananjaya de Silva - were also announced in the logo-unveiling program.
The four recruits were registered as direct signings before the players’ auction.
The north-eastern outfit meanwhile, also revealed its coaching staff and team management comprising Nafees Iqbal (team manager), Rajin Saleh (assistant and batting coach), Najmul Islam (assistant coach), Syed Rasel (fast bowling coach), Murad Khan (spin bowling coach), Dollar Mahmud and Rasel Ahmed (fielding coach), Yakub Chowdhury (trainer), Zahurul Haque Ujjal (physio), Kazi Masuk Al Bari (logistics manager) and Minhaz Uddin Khan (media/commercial manager).

I have no idea why either players would want to do this.
There's 5 Test matches in a row for Shaheen & Rizwan after the WC & an ODI series vs NZ. Not only should they not be playing this league, they should also be rested for the ODI series vs NZ after the Tests. It won't be much of a break either since PSL will start not that much later & then an extended ODI & T20 series in April vs NZ.
I feel for the players. They don't get to make nearly as much money as cricketers outside Pakistan but the ODI series are important for the upcoming WC & both require some rest. Rizwan has literally been playing non-stop across all formats for two years.

Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman are also being looked at by the BPL franchises as possible signings.
It all depends on whether PCB allows NOCs to the players.

Test series alone is scheduled until January 8 and the ODI series finishes on the 14th. Shaheen doesn't need to be in the ODI series but I can't imagine they allow Babar/Fakhar/Rizwan to miss the series and field a completely 2nd string side.
Allowing Fakhar to go wouldn't be a completely bad idea if it means Saim Ayub takes his spot and given a proper chance.

Letting Shaheen Shah play in the BPL would be criminal. No country in the world besides Pakistan would let their premier fast bowler who just recovered from knee surgery and has numerous assignments in the next 12 months including 2 world cups even think about playing in the BPL. Naseem Shah shouldn't go either as well as Haris Rauf. These 3 are very crucial for our chances in the next world cup.

people saying pcb need to stop shaheen also need to say how much they think the PCB should fork out for his loss of earnings? cover full potential bpl contract?
he's always ready to play for pak, either give him a more lucrative and more restrictive central contract or accept that he has the right to secure his financial future.

We should develop an understanding with BCB to prevent clashes and allow players from each country to play in the respective leagues.
Bangladesh is a huge market and their players will be a step above some of the overseas players we have fielded.

They are marketable in their home country which is cricket mad.
And they will certainly be more marketable in Pakistan than some of the over the hill overseas players.
If you have the eye balls of a 100 million fans from a cricket mad country waiting for you then there is no harm pursuing such an arrangement.

100% fair point and I don't disagree. All I would say is for the players to think long-term. Yes, short-term, you can make money by going there but long-term, you're better off taking some rest if the goal is to prolong your International career. Shaheen in particular, who is just coming off a fairly serious injury and is going to play in the WC + 5 Test matches afterwards & then PSL shortly after. Might be a few weeks of a break before the 5 match ODI & T20 series begins too vs NZ.
Now in fairness, its not up to the player all the time to manage his workload and miss out on his earnings due to it. It's up to PCB to manage that workload too so he can still earn his big bucks in the other leagues. Certainly there needs to be a meeting of the minds and for both the players & PCB to figure out how players can maximize their earnings, be available for important International matches & still get enough rest.

Premier Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan has taken a swipe at the falling standards of the Bangladesh Premier League over the years, and highlighted the Bangladesh Cricket Board's failure to develop it as a tournament, one that can compete with other Twenty20 leagues around the world.
While speaking to the media during a commercial event in Dhaka Wednesday, Fortune Barishal captain Shakib stated that he will drastically change the face of the tournament if given the responsibility.
“If I am given the responsibility of CEO, I won't take long. It will take maximum of one-two months to fix everything," said the 35-year old.
Shakib in his statement compared the Dhaka Premier League with the BPL, putting the prestigious 50-over tournament ahead of the country's top T20 competition.
“DPL is a nicely organized tournament. Here clubs form the team long before the league. The teams know what their target is, and they can prepare accordingly,” said Shakib.
Like past editions of the tournament, BPL will only have ADRS (Alternative Decision Review System) instead of regular DRS.
According to BPL governing council, DRS is supposed to be added from the play-off stage.
“BCB probably has budget-crisis! If there is will, I see no reason to stop anything. Draft should be held three months before, DRS should be there. A player will come one day, leave two days later. No one knows who will come and go. This is how BPL is going on,” said Shakib.
Shakib also explained that the players who perform well in the BPL aren't evaluated.
“I left the Indian Premier League out of the equation. When someone does well in the Big Bash, Pakistan Super League or Caribbean Premier League, it gives them a chance in the national team. BPL is not being seen that much outside of the country so the foreign players who did well in BPL couldn't be considered for national selection. But BPL is a competitive tournament, those who play well here deserve it,” he said.
Shakib also feels BPL is a big failure from a marketing point of view.
Citing the popularity of cricket in the country, Shakib said, "Look at any remote part of the village…cricket is being played everywhere. It is not that there is no popularity. A game so popular in a country of 16-20 crore people and its market will not exist? It is very sad. I mean I don't believe at least."

The ninth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League, the franchise-based Twenty20 tournament, is set to kick off Friday amid the absence of Decision Review System.
The first phase of the month-long tournament will start in Dhaka before shifting to Chittagong and Sylhet and returning to the capital city in mid-February for the business stage.
The glittering tournament is facing severe criticism over several issues and one of the most talked about was the absence of DRS from the beginning as it was announced earlier that the technology will be available only from the knockouts.
Bangladesh Test and T20I captain Shakib al Hasan heavily criticized the BPL and also expressed frustration at the absence of DRS.
Comilla Victorians coach Mohammad Salahuddin also raised the board's lack of willingness to introduce DRS from the beginning.
"Our production team informed us about this (DRS) two/three months ago. After that we tried our best to bring DRS. We have also contacted the ICC about this. But for some reason it was not possible to bring. Several international tournaments are going on at the same time. Some franchise leagues are also running. Due to these reasons, we could not bring DRS," said Bangladesh Cricket Board CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury on the eve of the tournament.
Along with the BPL, CSA T20 in South Africa (from January 10) and the ILT20 in Abu Dhabi (from January 13) will also be held simultaneously.
Although these tournaments will be held for the first time, DRS is likely to be there.
But BPL, which is running its ninth season this time, could not manage to arrange DRS, frustrating the players and officials a great deal.
Nizamuddin admitted the limitations and shortcomings of BPL.
"We definitely had limitations here. Due to which our production house could not bring it. We also tried hard enough on our part after knowing this. But currently those who provide DRS services do not have enough manpower," he added.
However, amid the issues, BPL will start with two matches - Chattogram Challengers will take on Sylhet Strikers in the first match of the day, starting at 2:30pm, and Comilla Victorians will face Rangpur Riders in the second game at 7:15pm.
But weekday matches and those on Saturday will start from 2pm and 7pm.

Sylhet Strikers kicked off the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 2023 with a thumping win against Chattogram Challengers in the opening game of the ninth edition in Mirpur's Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Friday.
BPL, the premier T20 tournament of the country, started with a non-glamorous and simple opening ceremony, as well as a controversial time change announcement at the very last moment.
Bangladesh Cricket Board announced officially around 12:30pm local time on matchday that the game will start from 2pm, instead of 2:30pm, and such a last minute change created confusion among the fans.
Sylhet captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza won the toss and elected to field first as expected.
Chattogram batting was below par overall as they lost regular wickets from the beginning, which restricted them to just 89 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs.
Initially there was some help for the bowlers, not unusual on a Mirpur wicket, but Chattogram's low score was mainly due to their poor batting rather than difficult condition.
Only three batsmen managed to score in double digit with Afif Hossain top-scoring with 25 and Al-Amin scoring 18.
Sylhet bowlers bowled with good line and length and kept the runs in check.
Right-arm pacer Rejaur Rahman Raja, who was picked ahead of the experienced Rubel Hossain, was the best bowler for Sylhet as the young quick picked up four wickets conceding just 14 runs in his four overs.
Veteran Mashrafe was back in competitive cricket after almost eight months and the right-arm medium pacer bowled impressively as well.
Mashrafe took one wicket leaking only 18 runs in his quota of four overs.
Pakistani recruit Mohammad Amir was also brilliant with the ball, giving away just seven runs in four overs and bagging two wickets.
In reply, Sylhet reached their target with ease as they scored 90 runs in just 12.3 overs losing two wickets.
The Netherlands' Colin Ackermann (one) got out in the third over but that did not stop Sylhet top-order batsmen from scoring freely, and clinch the win convincingly.
Opener Nazmul Hossain Shanto was the highest scorer with his 43-run unbeaten innings off 41 balls with three fours and one six.
1ST MATCH
Chattogram Challengers 89/9 (Raja 4/14, Amir 2/7) lost to Sylhet Strikers 90/2 in 12.3 overs (Shanto 43*, Zakir 27) by eight wickets

Sylhet finally has a half decent BPL side. Maybe this could the year.
Come on strikers!
Ngl. BPL is so dull, poor marketed, lowly vibes. This is the 9th year and the organisation is abysmal to say the least. It’s shame, it never has grown to such levels in the country. There’s not that huge vibe or hype around it except in Dhaka maybe. BCB is so corrupt and lazy. They need to go home and away within few years roads and bridges have been built to link each corner, every cities, so no excuses. Need to improve the local divisional city stadiums for each region!

Usman Khan batting like an absolute monster in this chase.
Can someone explain how other leagues around the world have identified this guy as a good T20 player but apparently he didn't play in the domestic National T20 and hasn't played domestic for us since November 27, 2021 in the 2nd XI, in which he scored 116 runs off 91 balls. He's not even good enough to be in the 2nd XI?
And yet he was playing in the Abu Dhabi T10 and did well there and now BPL. Poor stuff from Pakistan.Last edited by Nasty Naz; 9th January 2023 at 21:26.

Azam Khan is having a good time there. Not surprised.
I feel like Azam should be a regular for Pakistan in LOI formats. He can hit well.

Looks like a league of Bangladesh and Pakistan cricketers combined. Every decent Pakistani player not selected for ODIs is playing there.

Go on the Strikers!! Smoking them teams, 4 out of 4. The local boy Tawhid Hridoy seems like a great find and if he doesn’t get into BD t20 side after 4 fifties in a row then Bangladesh cricket is indeed utterly corrupt and their T20 side deserved to be doomed.
Anyway. Sylhet to take this BPL..
-
11th January 2023, 00:43 #54
BD selectors need to select the players who perform in BPL. Enough of their stupidity in selection for in this format. There’s clearly some good players in this format for Bangladesh.

Fortune Barishal captain Shakib al Hasan, opening batsman Anamul Haque and Rangpur Riders skipper Nurul Hasan have each been fined 15% of their respective match fees for a Level 1 breach of the Bangladesh Cricket Board's Code of Conduct.
The players were penalized for CoC violations during Tuesday's Ispahani Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 2023 match between Barishal and Rangpur at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Mirpur.
Shakib and Nurul were both found in breach of Article 2.4 of the BCB Code of Conduct for Players which refers to disobeying an umpire's instruction during a match.
Anamul meanwhile, was penalized for a breach of Article 2.8 of the BCB Code of Conduct for Players for showing dissent at an umpire's decision.
In addition to the fines, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of each player.
The players admitted their offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Match Referee Akhtar Ahmad and as such, there was no need for formal hearings.
On-field umpires Ravindra Wimalasari and Gazi Sohel, third umpire Morshed Ali Khan and fourth official Mozahid Swapan levelled the charges.
Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50% of a player's match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Man, seeing some of these highlights makes bpl look like a joke. Shoddy umpiring and the production quality looks garbage. It looks so foggy? Can't be because of the weather/pollution but rather production is crappy?

Bangladesh Premier League T20 franchise Comilla Victorian's coach Mohammad Salauddin has been fined 50 percent of his match fee by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
Salauddin was slammed with the penalty after he was found of breaching Level 2 Article 2.7 of the BCB Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to ‘Public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in a Match'.
BPL T20 defending champions Comilla Victorians coach Salauddin spoke out against the decisions that went against his side in the game against Fortune Barishal on Saturday at Chattogram's Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.
“We will be suspended since there is no point in protesting whether we give it in written form or verbally complain about it. Actually, there is nothing to do. We have our hands and legs tied,” Salahuddin said to the media on the controversial LBW decision against his batter Jaker Ali.
Comilla had lost the game by 12 runs and faced their third defeat in as many games this season.
“What we saw in naked eyes was not out which the third umpire was giving out, what can we do? We have nothing to do,” Salahuddin had added.
Comilla batter Jaker was given LBW out by the third umpire, Tanvir Ahmed, despite the major part of the ball having pitched outside leg-stump. The unusual decision triggered controversy immediately to which the BCB however came in counter.
BCB later on Saturday night in a media release said as per the BPL playing conditions, “A ball will be considered to have pitched 'In-Line' in the ADRS if 'Any part of the ball was inside the Pitching Zone'."
Comilla coach Salauddin for the offence has also been handed three demerit points to disciplinary record. The charges were leveled against Salauddin by on-field umpires David Milns and Morshed Ali Khan, the third umpire Tanvir Ahmed and fourth umpire Mozahiduzzaman Swapan.

Dhaka Dominators vs Sylhet Strikers, 13th Match
Dhaka Dominators have won the toss and have opted to bat
Mohammad Amir: New pitch, new conditions, new wicket so we need to adjust accordingly. Always feel that T20 is a game of momentum. I feel that we have the best local players in the BPL. Howdy [Hridoy] is batting so well and he is the next big thing in Bangladesh cricket. Shanto is a good batter and Raja is bowling over 140kph, so good signs for Bangladesh cricket. Rely on cutters and change of pace and bowl according to the wicket. Keep it on a stump to stump line and test the batters.
Mashrafe Mortaza: We would like to bat as well, toss you can't handle. We had few sessions in the nets, 4 matches we played in 5 days, we needed a break. We have got 2 changes. We miss him a lot, he has been batting nicely but he will be back soon, one or two games rest and he will be back [on Towhid Hridoy].
Nasir Hossain: I would like to bat first, looks a very good wicket, if you score 180 it will be nice. We have three changes.
Teams:
Sylhet Strikers (Playing XI): Mohammad Haris, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Zakir Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim(w), Thisara Perera, Imad Wasim, Akbar Ali, Mashrafe Mortaza(c), Mohammad Amir, Nazmul Islam, Rubel Hossain
Dhaka Dominators (Playing XI): Dilshan Munaweera, Soumya Sarkar, Mohammad Mithun(w), Nasir Hossain(c), Ariful Haque, Usman Ghani, Arafat Sunny, Taskin Ahmed, Al-Amin Hossain, Salman Irshad, Robin Das
