Bangladesh (271/7) defeat India (266/9) to win 2nd ODI by 5 runs
It's easy to view the opening game as an upset. India are ranked fourth and Bangladesh seventh after all, and the visitors have a history of superlative performances in the format; they, in fact, have won 30 of the 37 ODIs between the sides. But look closer and you will see why Bangladesh winning the first ODI wasn't as unprecedented as it seems.
The hosts haven't lost an ODI series at home since October 2016. They have comfortably defeated the likes of Zimbabwe, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in the meanwhile, and looked increasingly comfortable in a format they enjoy playing. Like head coach Russell Domingo said, "There is confidence in this format." It was evident in how they bowled against India the other night and then found a hero in Mehidy Hasan to snatch the game from the jaws of defeat, but truth be told, they would like a less nerve-wracking win this time around.
For India, a defeat in the second ODI could mean back-to-back series losses in Bangladesh, the last one coming back in 2015. The first thing they would want to get right is their game plan against left-arm spin. It wasn't the first time that Shakib Al Hasan left India bamboozled by the arm-ball. Runs against him were hard to come by even on their last tour, but Mustafizur Rahman stole the thunder then with the sheer number of wickets on that occasion. This time, Shakib is all over the charts and will pose questions for India once again.
The visitors, though, can take heart from the bowling of Mohammed Siraj in the opening ODI. Their problems scaled up only when Siraj was done with his spell, with the other bowlers finding it difficult to polish the tail off. Can the unit conjure up an all-round performance and take the series to a decider?
When: Wednesday, December 7 at 12:00 PM Local Time (11:30 AM IST)
Where: Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka
What to expect: Another evening of boisterous crowd support for the home side. Spinners will have a say once again and the side which bats better against them will once again call the shots. The captain who wins the toss might want to bowl first again to take advantage of the "sticky" nature of the pitch in those early overs.
Team News:
Bangladesh: The hosts are likely to stick with the winning combination.
Probable XI: Litton Das (c), Anamul Haque, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Ebadot Hossain
India: Axar Patel, if fit, could come in for Shahbaz Ahmed to strengthen the batting. Kuldeep Sen, although expensive, was impressive in patches and is likely to get another game. Shardul Thakur suffered a cramp in the last game but has been cleared to play, Shikhar Dhawan said.
Probable XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed/Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Sen
What they said:
"I have been involved in some amazing games with Bangladesh. We've had some narrow wins and losses, but that (win in the first ODI) was as close as they come. It shouldn't have been that tight. When we needed 59 runs with four wickets down, we were in a pretty good position. By far, not the perfect performance. There's a lot of work still to be done but to be able to win from that situation, says a lot about the team's character." - Russell Domingo
"We need to learn and understand how to play on such wickets. No excuses for us because we are used to these wickets. I don't really know how much they can improve in a couple of practice sessions. I feel the genes are there and it's only about handling pressure. I am sure these guys will learn and we look forward to the next game." - Rohit Sharma
Squads:
India Squad: Rohit Sharma(c), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Sen, Umran Malik, Rajat Patidar, Ishan Kishan, Rahul Tripathi, Axar Patel
Bangladesh Squad: Najmul Hossain Shanto, Litton Das(c), Anamul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim(w), Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Ebadot Hossain, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Yasir Ali, Taskin Ahmed, Nasum Ahmed, Nurul Hasan

India should play the same top order again if they are set on having Dhawan open in the 2023 WC. The selection committee has made some bizarre decisions. E.g. dropping SKY after a few games, dropping Sanju Samson for Hooda, etc. I’m all for stability now till the 2023 WC.

In an ideal world, this team would be better, imho:
1) Rohit
2) Kohli
3) Shreyas
4) KL
5) SKY
6) Pandya
7) Jadeja
8) Washi
9) Yuzi / Shami depending on the pitch
10) Arshdeep
11) Bumrah
5 proper batsmen, 3 all rounders, 3 wicket taking bowlers
Bumrah, Shami, and Arshdeep are wicket takers up front and can bowl in the death
Yuzi is the wicket taker in the middle overs. Jadeja and Pandya can do the containing job.
In terms of batting, we will have enough depth as Washi at no. 8 is very capable. Jadu and Washi can also play the role of floaters if we need a L-R combination.Last edited by BreadPakoda; 7th December 2022 at 01:13.

^ Ofc one of Shami / Yuzi play. So middle overs could get tricky if we go for Shami and death over could get tricky if we go for Yuzi

BD have the momentum. Can they win the series? It is not impossible.
BD need to continue the good work instead of getting carried away (like they often do).

Bangladesh have won the toss and have opted to bat
Teams:
India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma(c), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Siraj, Umran Malik
Bangladesh (Playing XI): Najmul Hossain Shanto, Litton Das(c), Anamul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim(w), Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nasum Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman
Rohit Sharma: We have to play good cricket and I hope bowling first now, we can restrict them to a decent score and bat well. We have two changes. Axar Patel is back and he replaces Shahbaz Ahmed. Kuldeep Sen is not available for selection, so we have got Umran Malik in place of him. Going back to the drawing board and understanding how we need to play on this conditions, just the basic talk about what we need to do with the bat and how to handle certain bowlers. Had good training session yesterday, and hopefully we can come out and replicate those learnings.
Litton Das: We would like to bat first. Looks a good wicket, last game we saw it was difficult to bat in the second innings. We have one change. Nasum is playing and Hasan Mahmud is not playing. The boys are pumped up for this contest.

Kuldeep Sen complained of back stiffness following the first ODI on Sunday. The BCCI Medical Team assessed him and has advised him rest. He was not available for selection for the 2nd ODI.

What a fight back. Reminds me of when Azhar had NZ at 80-5 or 80-6 or something in an ODI in NZ and they ended up with 280 odd at the end.
Let’s see if India bounce back or if this has demoralized them.

Dhawan is 37, and hand-eye coordination isn't the same as it was before, esp for someone who banked on being the "aggressive opener", you can always fight biology that long so he should perhaps aim for a graceful retirement.

To be fair in the last 8 years Bangladesh have lost only one bilateral series at home and that too was against England which we should have won.
ODI is our best format and we are playing at home. That is perhaps our best chance of winning a game. Other formats and different conditions would mean otherwise

The Indian team has regressed a lot in LOIs as evident from their recent performance. Dhawan and Rohit have no business being in the ODI team anymore, and the team management should consider grooming new players and build a team for the future.
Another pertinent point that deserves mention is that the Indian team has forgotten the art of playing spin bowlers. Whereas the Indian Team even a decade back used to murder spin bowling in both Tests and ODIs, the current team has regressed beyond repairs. This is very surprising given the fact that the likes of Kohli and Sharma grew up playing against some great spinners in Murali, Mendis, Swann and Herath. To watch them struggle against the SENA team leggies is a sheer travesty.

Shreyas Iyer is the right candidate to lead Indian ODI team (and bunch of young players replace the oldies under him), this is the way to go for India if they have any chance of competing in the world cup! This is how they should go about in next 10 months...
If Pandya is unfit to play ODIs he should stick to T20s and develop effectiveness there. Similarly Pant should stick to Tests. Iyer only for ODIs. Sky only for T20s. I think Gill is another guy who can stick to only ODIs (and Tests middle order). This is how we should dynamically form/build the teams... Rohit & Kohli should forget LOIs and see if they can contribute in Tests by completely concentrating in that format...

Axar is out. Blow for India.
Bangladesh should win it now. Losing from here would be disappointing.

India need 83 runs from 70 balls. 4 wickets in hand. All set batters are gone.
Advantage Bangladesh.

Ebadot has been bowling well in ODI. 8 wickets in 3 games. He should play ODI more.
