Sussex sign Shadab Khan for the entirety of the 2023 T20 Vitality Blast competition

Sussex Cricket is delighted to announce the signing of Pakistan international allrounder, Shadab Khan for the 2023 T20 Vitality Blast.

Khan, who was appointed Vice-Captain for Pakistan’s limited over teams in 2021, will join the Sussex Sharks for the entirety of the Blast campaign.

The right arm leg-spinner/batter has made 84 T20I appearances for Pakistan, taking 98 wickets, with best figures of 4-8.

Shadab made his T20I debut for Pakistan against the West Indies in 2017 and made his mark instantly, winning man of the match in back-to-back games, taking a total of 7 wickets for 21 runs.

In his 38 T20I batting innings, Khan has scored 476 runs at a strike rate of 143.8 and a high score of 52.

Sussex Bowling Coach, James Kirtley, said: “Shadab will provide amazing experience in our middle order, he is someone who has played all around the world and has experienced many situations, which can only benefit our team.

“He really does provide flexibility to our side as he can score runs and take wickets in crucial moments, but more than anything else he is an experienced head that Ravi can go to as captain to look for support when making crucial in-game decisions.

“I know that he will have a massive impact on our team this year.”

Khan has already played 225 domestic T20 matches at the age of 24, accumulating 2088 runs, with a strike rate of 136.91.

Having played for Yorkshire in the Blast last season, Khan is looking forward to following Mushtaq Ahmed and playing for Sussex at The 1st Central County Ground: “I love playing in England. I know Mushtaq Ahmed is a legend at Sussex, and it is an honour to follow in his footsteps.

“Sussex has a proud history and I hope that my skillset will help the team achieve great things in the Blast this year.”

Shadab is a "must-have" type of player in T20s. Brilliant when it comes to bowling and fielding while making potentially match-winning contributions with the bat. He can get into any T20 side in the world.

The PCB needs to manage his workload and make sure that he doesn't play too many of these leagues.

Had a poor stint at Yorkshire if I recall.

The guy regularly gets injured playing limited overs cricket, so I'm just assuming that he's very injury prone by default.

Only 24y old.. He is not scoring that many runs, hardly playing all three formats.. Mostly bowling in LOIs only...

All three formats together may be bowled 5000 deliveries for Pak... but gets injured toomuch..

someone needs to show his contribution for Pak and tell if he is happy playing leagues , then go Amir way..

Lol at the moaning towards one of the most important players Pakistan have in their LOI sides. Will he be missing any series or refusing to play for Pakistan because of this?

Playing in England is something most talented Pakistani players did at some point in their career.

Shadab also has every right to earn a living in his spare time and provide for his family.

    Ahhh of course.
Pakistan is the TEAM when it comes to playing T20 cricket.

Do these guys also work on their shortcomings or just chase money and play every single T20 game on planet earth?

Shadab Khan speaking to Sussex media:

"I'm very excited because, you know, Sussex is a big country and it's privilege to play for this county."

"Last year was my first season of playing T20 Blast in England. It was bit tough for me, but learned from there and hopefully I will perform well for Sussex."

"Sussex is a big county and a few of our Pakistani legends have played here in the past, so I wanted to play here and hopefully I will perform like them as well."

"Mohammad Rizwan is a lovely character and I always talk to him because he is one of our core players in the Pakistan team as well.

"So, when I was coming here, so I was talking to him as well, and he said a lot of good things about Sussex, so I wanted to do these things as well and try to enjoy myself."

"I'm an all-rounder so you have to perform in a both batting and bowling which is what Sussex are wanting from me, so I will try to do that to the best of my ability."

"I wanted to come here to make Sussex Champions - that's my aim and hopefully I will do that."

    Flopped badly at Yorkshire.

Let's see how he does on the South coast this season.

T20 Blast should suit his brand of cricket.

Shadab Khan in second XI match against Essex on Wednesday.

Batting at number three spot, Shadab played a brilliant cameo of 42 runs in 15 deliveries, including four boundaries and four sixes, and with the ball claimed three wickets whilst giving away 21 runs in his four over spell,

9 off 8, a nasty collision in the field, meaning he couldn't bowl.

Not a great day for him.

Need to see the video of his collision in the field. The chances are high that he was doing what he usually does - try to be a hero and failing miserably.

He did the same with Haris Sohail and got him injured and this time he is on the receiving end himself.

Paul Fabrace, Sussex Head Coach on Shadab:

"He's all right, he has just a bit of a sore neck. The doctor felt that it was best to take him out of the game as we were nervous, obviously, of a concussion to Shadab. So, until I speak to them, I think that's what he was taken out of the game for. But, yeah, I mean, they're both alright. That's the most important thing."

"Yeah, it could have been a lot worse, couldn't it? But that's what happens when you are committed, and you both have your eyes fixed on the ball. It was very windy out there as well. So, I would imagine that played a part in the ball swirling away from the pair of them. But the good thing is that they're both okay and there are no nasty injuries, so that's a good sign. Good news."

    I couldn’t have been right.

Shadab had no business going for this catch. It belonged to that English fielder at Long-off. He had it covered.

I agree. This could have been worse both for him and the other fielder.

He is like an excitable kid in the field. Chasing every ball with no awareness and respect for other fielders.

Not sure if Pakistan identifies this as a potential problem. He has been doing this since day one.

Problem is, we have such bad fielders in the past that anyone who runs after a ball with intent is encouraged and made to be the next Jonty!

You need to watch his innings today of 1 run from 11 balls to actually appreciate how bad it was and how clueless he looked.

What on earth was he doing?

His shot to get out belonged in an under 11s match.
