The Aussies are favourites but I think if we don't make the final or don't win it, it will be considered a failed tornament. We have Harry Kewell back which is great. Mark Viduka was set to announce his retirement a week or 2 ago. But our coach, Graham Arnold had a chat with him and persuaded him to not retire just for this tournament. He is set to retire after the tournament.

Australia have done what they did in their first ever WC match and conceded an early goal. Muburak scored the goal in the 32nd minute.

Aloisi and Cahill on in the second half. 15 minutes to go and Oman still lead 1-0.

I'll state the obvious and say as all commentators say. The Aussies would love a goal here.

I watched the Oman - Aus game ... and there is definately a lot of quality players in Asia. Oman can count themselves unlucky for not getting a win in this game. Schwartzer basically was the only reason why we didn't lose this game. Need lots of improvement to make it through to the next round. Our next game is against Iraq on Friday.

    Cmon Socceroos!!!

Still early days but going by some of the results, this is going to be a very tight competition. At the moment, top teams like Aus, Japan, Korea and Saudi will have to improve a few gears to be considered contenders.

If we lose today. We'll come out in our final match and smash our opposition. Then when they get back, the question will be; "Why didn't we play as good in the first 2 matches?".

This tournament is full of surprises..UEA getting knocked out this early, Oman and Aussies going home and the likes of Qatar on the verge..

I think this is what we have to do.

If both games are draws, we are out.
If Iraq wins and we win by less than two goals, we're out (I think).
I think we have to win by more than 2 goals to be safe. Because the players won't know the score of the other game as it's on at the same time.

Iraq beat Australia 3-1 in Asia Cup Football

BANGKOK: Iraqis were the better team for most of the time in the Asia Cup game against Australia and could have won by a more emphatic scoreline against the rivals, which though improved little from their opening game 1-1 draw with Oman.

After Iraq took an early lead, Australia got back into the game through Mark Viduka at the start of the second half but were undone by two subsequent Iraqi goals.

Australia started at a much higher tempo than five days back but Younis Mahmoud, Iraq’s goalscorer against Thailand, went close in the ninth minute, turning Brett Emerton and forcing Mark Schwarzer to tip the ball over.

The Socceroos had most of the possession of a foul-strewn half but rarely troubled their opponents.

Mark Bresciano shot wide early in the game and Mark Viduka curled a free-kick just past the post.

Iraq took the lead after 20 minutes. A deep free-kick from rumoured Sunderland target Nashat Akram was floated into the box. Saleh Sadr burst free of the players packed into the penalty area and attempted to head the ball home from close range. The midfielder didn’t make contact but did enough to distract Schwarzer and the ball bounced into the Aussie goal.

After another stuttering performance, it was no surprise when Tim Cahill was introduced at half-time.

The Everton midfielder wasn't involved in the equaliser that came a minute later. Brett Emeron whipped a fine cross over from the right and at the far post, Viduka climbed well to head the ball back in the direction from which it came and into the far corner.

Australia were alive and energized but fell behind again on the hour.

The impressive Akram picked out Hawar Mulla Mohammed in the box and the Al Ain player slotted the ball past the advancing Schwarzer.

As the game progressed, first Melbourne Victory striker Archie Thompson was brought on by Graham Arnold and with 20 minutes remaining, John Aloisi was thrown into the fray.

With the introduction of more offensive power, Australia started to look ragged in defence and after 75 minutes, Iraq almost sealed the win in style. Mohammed chipped the ball goalwards from the edge of the area but a backpedaling Schwarzer managed to touch the ball onto the bar.

The third goal came with five minutes remaining. A poor clearance from Lucas Neill was intercepted by the busy Mohammed, the rebound from his blocked shot was gleefully turned home by Karrar Jassim Mohammed from close range.

There was still time for Neill to be given his marching orders at the end of a game that Australia, and their jeering fans, will want to forget.

Well, Niell isn't playing. So we need a new defender. I expect Aloisi to start. With Cahill and Kewell coming off the bench.

    Carn Aussies! Great 4-0 win.

Beauchamp scored 1 goal. And Geordie Ahmed will be happy to hear that Mark Viduka scored two goals. Kewell scored the other.

Australia will be playing Japan in the quarter finals for a rematch of last years amazing match at Kaiserslauten.

HANOI - Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi was the hero for defending champions Japan as they eliminated Australia 4-3 in a penalty shootout to progress to the semi-finals of the AFC Asian Cup.

Kawaguchi saved from both Harry Kewell and Lucas Neill as Japan’s quest for a third successive Asian Cup title stayed alive with Yuji Nakazawa scored the winning penalty emphatically past Mark Schwarzer.

The Japanese rekindled memories of their last appearance in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup, when they knocked out Jordan in similar fashion before going on to win the title.

It was a brave performance, though, from the Australians who played the entire extra-time period with just 10 men after Vince Grella was sent off.

At score at that stage was 1-1 after John Aloisi’s 70th minute opener was cancelled out less than two minutes later when Naohiro Takahara struck from close range.

Aloisi struck for the Socceroos with just 20 minutes to go when he pushed home a corner from substitute Harry Kewell after the ball had somehow managed to cross the six-yard box untouched.

But Australia’s lead lasted less than two minutes when Takahara capitalised on Mark Milligan’s miss-hit clearance before turning and firing past Schwarzer, via the goalkeeper’s right post.

Japan’s hopes of progressing improved further as time was running out when referee Kuwaiti Saad Khameel Al Fadhli sent midfielder Vince Grella off when he hit Takahara in the face with a flailing arm as both went up for a header, but Ivica Osim’s team were unable to take full advantage.

Not surprisingly, the champions controlled possession but they lacked the creativity to breach the tightly packed Australian defence.

The game went into extra-time but the Australians put up a dogged defence and successfully kept the Japanese at bay, even though there was a scare for the Socceroos with just second remaining.

A lofted cross into the penalty area was met by Shunsuke Nakamura’s flying volley, but Schwarzer’s reflex save to his right kept the ball out and took the game into a penalty shootout.

Kawaguchi guessed correctly to deny Kewell and Neill while Nakamura and Yasuhito Endo converted successfully before Tim Cahill put Australia on the board.

Yuichi Komano made it 3-1 and Nick Carle kept Australia alive with his spot kick. The pressure increased on Japan when Takahara put his effort over the bar and when David Carney scored that left Nakazawa to go head-to-head with Schwarzer.

The veteran defender, however, was equal to the task to send Japan into the semi-finals once again.

We were robbed ... the ref was blatantly against us ... Grella got sent off when he clearly had his eyes on the ball and had no malice in the header (and plus the Japanese player came up behind him). And Kewell and Carney got given a yellow card for diving when they clearly had been tripped. Funny how in this Asian cup when all other teams have been diving and play acting, we get punished for it when it wasn't warranted. Still great performance by the boys to play out almost 50 minutes with 10 men in 38 degrees heat. In the end we only lost in penalties which is a lottery in itself.

I think we are unfairly labelled as a dirty team in the media and by other teams. We play hard coz a lot of our players are in the EPL and Italian and German League and a lot of them are Croatian background and are physically strong. But we don't dive and fake injuries. Anyways ... its just disapointing that we didn't go further in this tournament ... a new coach should definately be on the agenda.

Even at the world cup the Japan side said they didn't want to play Australia because they were a rough team and so did Brazil.

Well was a great result for football last night. To see the Iraqi team which is a mixture of Kurds, Sunnis and Shias all play together in one team and beat all before them. I know it doesn't make up for the suffering, but at least the people of Iraq can have something to cheer about. Great footballing story!!!

By the way did anyone else notice that the Iraqi playmaker and star Nashat Akram has a bit of a resemblance with one of our own.
