I don't know if she really killed American soldiers or not but somehow she got herself in trouble which is extremely sad but i am not ready to believe that an educated Neuroscientist is a victim of American brutality.

firstly, a little recorded tape does not give away the secret which everyone has been waiting to hear, secondly if she was kidnapped, what has musharraf got to do with that, thousands are kidnapped every year why not blame the leaders than, some people are just useless in their attempts to defame others.

She didn't kill anybody, she supposedly grabbed the weapon of a marine and in the process was herself shot...for this she was sentenced to 86 years...

What you are saying is her getting kidnapped from karachi by local police at the behest of ISI and then being handed over to the Americans proves she is guilty of something...

I guess all those innocent prisoners in Pakistani jails are not really innocent, but are actually guilty...

Read the in-depth analysis in light of the latest development of Aafia's case and ISI's egregious corruption/duplicity which inevitably leads to Mushie's desk...

Guantanamo files paint Aafia Siddiqui as top al-Qaeda operative

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011...ddiqui-alqaida

Aafia Siddiqui, the Pakistani neuroscientist whose case has become a flashpoint of Pakistani-American tensions, plotted to smuggle explosives into America and offered to manufacture biological weapons, according to the Guantánamo files.

The allegations are a combination of US intelligence analysis and direct testimony by at least three senior al-Qaida figures, including the 9/11 plotter Khalid Sheikh Muhammad. They cannot be independently corroborated and the testimonies were likely to have been extracted under conditions of torture.

Muhammad, known as KSM in intelligence circles, was waterboarded 183 times in the month after his capture in Pakistan in March 2003.

But several of the accounts do overlap, linking Siddiqui, a diminutive 39-year-old mother of three, with some of Osama bin Laden's most senior lieutenants. They help explain why the FBI placed her on a list of the world's seven most wanted al-Qaida fugitives in 2004.

Siddiqui disappeared from Karachi in March 2003 only to reappear five years later amid murky circumstances in Ghazni, central Afghanistan. There was an altercation in a police station and the US accused Siddiqui of trying to shoot two soldiers and two FBI agents.

She was sent to the US, tried and last year sentenced to 86 years' jail. At home in Pakistan she became a cause célèbre widely viewed as an innocent victim of American injustice.

During the recent stand-off over Raymond Davis, the CIA spy who shot two people in Lahore, a chorus of Pakistani politicians demanded the US repatriate Siddiqui in exchange for the American.

The Guántanamo files offer a murky perspective, placing Siddiqui at the heart of an al-Qaida cell based in Karachi between 2002 and 2003. Emboldened by the success of the 9/11 attacks and led by KSM, the cell conspired to mount fresh attacks in the US, on Heathrow airport and inside Pakistan.

According to the files, the cell planned to smuggle explosives into America under the cover of textile exports – 20 and 40ft foot containers filled with women's and children's clothes. The explosives would be used to attack "economic targets" inside the US, according to KSM.

The operation would take place through an import-export business run by Saifullah Paracha, a Pakistani businessman who worked as a New York travel agent for 13 years before developing ties to Osama bin Laden. Paracha, 64, is currently in Guantánamo Bay.

According to Paracha's file, Siddiqui's role was to "rent houses and provide administrative support for the operation". As part of this brief she travelled from Pakistan to the US in January 2003 to help renew the American travel papers of Majid Khan, a co-conspirator who had been ordered to bomb petrol stations and water treatment facilities in America.

According to Khan, he provided Siddiqui with money, photos and a completed application for an "asylum travel form" that "looked and functioned like a passport".

Then, according to Khan's file, "Siddiqui returned to the US and opened a post office box in detainee's name, using her driver's licence information".

The plot collapsed after Khan was picked up in Pakistan and sent to Guantánamo. A co-conspirator in America, Uzair Paracha, was arrested in possession of the post box key.

Paracha, son of Saifullah Paracha, was sentenced to 30 years' imprisonment in 2006; details of Siddiqui's role in the plot surfaced during his trial.

Siddiqui's family have always insisted she was framed. Her lawyer, Elaine Sharpe, suggested she had been the victim of identity theft; her sister Fowzia said the purpose of the postbox was to apply for jobs at American universities.

The Guantánamo files give fresh details on Siddiqui's relationship with Ammar Baluchi, the nephew of KSM and a senior al-Qaida figure facing a raft of serious allegations – facilitating the 9/11 attackers, acting as a courier for Bin Laden and plotting to crash a plane packed with explosives into the US consulate in Karachi.

Siddiqui reportedly married Baluchi during a secret ceremony near Karachi in February 2003, six months after divorcing her previous husband who said he had grown alarmed by her extremist views. Siddiqui's family denies the marriage took place.

Baluchi said he told Siddiqui, who has a biology degree from MIT, that al-Qaida had set up a laboratory to make biological weapons. Siddiqui replied that she "was willing to participate in a biological weapons (BW) project if al-Qaida tasked her to do so".

After that conversation, Baluchi said, "he never tasked Siddiqui to participate in the BW project and never considered to let her work in the laboratory".

Al-Qaida has a biological weapons programme based in Afghanistan stretching back to the late 1990s. When Siddiqui was arrested in Ghazi in 2008 her handbag contained several bottles of deadly chemicals, extracts from an "arsonist's handbook" and details of several prominent American landmarks.

According to Balochi's file, he told interrogators that he became aware of a plan to attack Heathrow airport in January 2003 and had intended to seek help from a more senior al-Qaida operative, Walid bin Attash, to carry it out.

An "analyst note" in the files notes that the plot called for "crashing numerous airplanes into Heathrow, with a secondary explosion immediately outside of the airport as a diversion". It collapsed after KSM was arrested in March 2003.

Despite the serious nature of the allegations against Siddiqui contained in the Guantánamo files, the US has never attempted to prosecute her for them. In last year's court case she was charged with attempted murder; afterwards her lawyer said the case had been decided on "fear not facts".

The Obama administration had planned to bring Baluchi and his uncle KSM to New York to stand trial for their their part in the 9/11 attacks. But the plan was dropped following fierce criticism from US politicians.

That's about right, hollywood drama for the hillybillies of America.

Dr Aafia is claimed to have taken weapons of US soldiers while in custody and then attacking them. lol. Apart from the brainwashed in in the western world this was some sort of comedy script by the US for the rest.

KSM is a man who has been waterboarded over 180 times, he will claim to the long lost brother of Mickey Mouse if is asked.

Cables are not fact but are only the views of the American at cetain times. Those held in Gbay are being held against International law and the majority are being held because someone else claims they are Al-CIAda. In any sane society no person would be held because of such weak evidence but the horrors of planes going into buildings have had the desired effect on a brainwashed society.

    Dr Aafia Contracts Cancer

KARACHI - Pakistani scientist Dr Aafia Siddiqui, who is serving 86-year imprisonment in a US prison cell, has contracted cancer and allegedly become pregnant as a result of sexual abuse during her confinement.

Talking to The News Tribe, her sister Dr Fouzia Siddiqui said she had come to know through Pakistani Consul General in Houston that Aafia had been diagnosed with a cancer. She added that earlier there were reports that the Pakistani scientist had become pregnant due to alleged sexual abuse during imprisonment. However, the Pakistan Embassy has not playing its role in either confirming or rejecting the reports.
She said that former Pakistan ambassador to US Husain Haqqani was called back the next day when he told us about the condition of Aafia.

She quoted Pakistan Consul General Aqil Nadeem as saying that he was requesting the jail authorities for providing medical facilities to the Pakistani scientist.

Fouzia said keeping in view the reputation of the Roswell jail and the nature of her sister’s disease the request was insufficient.
She urged the Pakistan Embassy to arrange a team of physicians comprising doctors from jail as well as from private sector for Aafia.
Fouzia said that newly-appointed Pakistan Ambassador to US Sherry Rehman had assured her all possible help before leaving for America to take up her new assignment. However, despite making contact with her, the envoy has not given any response in this regard.

Speaking about the reports of Aafia’s alleged pregnancy, she said that her family was told about it after the Pakistani scientist showed some symptoms in the women jail.

Fouzia appealed to the US and Pakistani authorities to arrange a telephonic conversation of her mother with Aafia.
Earlier, British journalist and human rights activist Yvonne Ridley had declared the long punishment of Aafia as just ‘one step away from death’.

Talking about attitude of Pakistani politicians being adopted on the Aafia issue, Fouzia said she would not believe in their statements until and unless her sister returns to Pakistan. She complained that the politicians had only exploited the Aafia issue just to gain political mileage.

She said that Aafia had been provided substandard food at jail, which led to health problems as she had complained of it during her earlier telephonic conversations.

The News Tribe, a UK-based bilingual news website has approached Pakistan Ambassador to US Sherry Rehman through an email to get her point of view on the issue but received no response till the filing of this news.

She is innocent but your suggestion that it would be o.k to rape a woman if she guilty is very sick.

Also where are all those posters who are rightly sickened when Pak soldiers are killed but are strangely silent when a Pak woman is imprisoned with made up charges, raped and given cancer?

Brother g khan, this is a MUSLIM problem not a pakistani problem . All those innocent bros and sisters suffering in prisons around the world is our problem as an ummah.

And with re to sister afia, it was yvonne ridley (white revert) who masha'Allah was one the main people (if not the main person) responsible for highlighting her treatment.

May Allah release all the muslims from captivity, erase their sins and grant them Jannah, ameen.

Anyway got the article as it appeared in News Tribe of some other site.

“Dr Afia Siddiqui gets pregnant, contracts cancer in US jail”

    By Shahid Abbasi - Jan 21st, 2012

Karachi: Pakistani scientist Dr Afia Siddiqui, who is serving 86-year imprisonment in a US prison cell, has contracted cancer and allegedly become pregnant as a result of sexual abuse during her confinement.

Talking to The News Tribe, her sister Dr Dr Fouzia Siddiqui said she had come to know through Pakistani Consul General in Houston that Dr Afia Siddiqui had been diagnosed with a cancer. According to Pakistani TV anchor Aamir Liaquat Hussain, he had received information from his friends in the US that Dr Afia had contracted cancer and will be killed during confinement.

The renowned anchor said that the Pakistani scientist can be brought back through diplomatic efforts.

In a video uploaded on Youtube, Hussain said that Dr Afia had become pregnant as a result of sexual abuse in jail.

The fact that she is there in the first place is mind boggling.

In the original case they alleged that she disarmed a us marine (I think or a US soldier) and tried to shoot but was then shot!!!! How can a petite lady manage to do that ? Even a strong adult male would probably fail against a trained soldier. These liars dont seem to have any limits where their lies are concerned.

    Just wondering this but,

How on earth can she get pregnant because in the US all prisons are segregated between sex.

Unless of course it was the wardens doing it, and if thats the case then a whole new can of worms has been potentially opened.

Before pointing fingers and hurling abuse, it's essential to know whether this is true or not.

The pregnancy story has already been shot down by Hamid Mir and her sister.

It's stupid that they are holding her. Depressing to see the lack of effort from the government to bring her back.

Any form of abuse in prison is disgusting and unwarranted. I did post in an earlier thread the legal technicalities through which she ended up in U.S. prison.

it's a crying shame, because even in terms of technicality, she could have been proven not guilty of the charges.

Initially, the judge said that external evidence would not be allowed in the crime scene. Most of the evidence that the prosecutors relied on was circumstantial. The only evidence they had were the bullet holes on the site I believe, which was obviously nearly not enough to make a jury believe she was guilty.

However, it was Dr. Aafia's own stubbornness and reluctance to see the reality of the situation that she was embattled in that led to her downfall. The prosecutors simply asked her whether she had ever held a gun before in her life, to which she said no under oath.

The prosecutors then presented evidence which in turn showed that Dr. Aafia had not only held a gun before in her life, but that she did a shotgun traiing program( from MIT while she was there as a student. That ABSOLUTELY ruined her credibility under oath, and then the prosecution was able to present external evidence. It wasn't helped by the fact that she later completely refused to answer questions properly and dismissed every question( and the jury) by claiming that they were part of a zionist conspiracy.

Look, by all means and methods, what happened with Dr. Aafia was a sheer case of incompetence from the US in general. However, she could have still found saving grace in the courtroom, but unfortunately by that time she had become too alienated from the realities that might have been able to save her. As for her children and her timeline as to where she was held before 2008 when she opened fire on U.S. authorities in Afghanistan, no one has concrete proof, only theories.

When ever I hear/read about Dr Aafia, it makes my blood boil......

Look at the state of us Muslims, we are high in number but lack courage. Muslims are being attacked everywhere (Palestine, Afghanistan, Kashmir) yet our leaders do not care.....
When ever our people reach fame or high posts they lose their way and change their life styles (clubing, drinking etc)......

Why does the government not do anything to help Dr Aafia?

    from wiki

"According to a dossier prepared by UN investigators for the 9/11 Commission in 2004, Siddiqui, using the alias Fahrem or Feriel Shahin, was one of six alleged al-Qaeda members who bought $19 million worth of blood diamonds in Monrovia, Liberia, immediately prior to the September 11, 2001, attacks.[49] The diamonds were purchased because they were untraceable assets to be used for funding al-Qaeda operations.[4][14][36][50] The identification of Siddiqui was made three years after the incident by one of the go-betweens in the Liberian deal. Alan White, former chief investigator of the U.N.-backed war crimes tribunal in Liberia, said she was the woman.[4][14][36][51] Siddiqui's lawyer maintained credit card receipts and other records showed that she was in Boston at the time.[14] FBI agent Dennis Lormel, who investigated terrorism financing, said the agency ruled out a specific claim that she had evaluated diamond operations in Liberia, though she remained suspected of money laundering.[24]
In the summer of 2001, the couple moved to Malden, Massachusetts.[14] According to Khan, after the September 11 attacks, Siddiqui insisted on leaving the U.S., saying that it was unsafe for them and their children to remain.[52] He also said that she wanted him to move to Afghanistan, and work as a medic for the mujahideen.[16][24]
In May 2002, the FBI questioned Siddiqui and her husband regarding their purchase over the internet of $10,000 worth of night vision equipment, body armor, and military manuals including The Anarchist's Arsenal, Fugitive, Advanced Fugitive, and How to Make C-4.[20][24][36] Khan claimed that these were for hunting and camping expeditions. On June 26, 2002, the couple and their children returned to Karachi.[4][7][14][20]
In August 2002, Khan alleged Siddiqui was abusive and manipulative throughout their seven years of marriage; her violent personality and extremist views led him to suspect her of involvement in jihadi activities.[52] Khan went to Siddiqui's parents' home, and announced his intention to divorce her and argued with her father. The latter died of a heart attack on August 15, 2002.[14][36] In September 2002, Siddiqui gave birth to the last of their three children, Suleman.[14] The couple's divorce was finalized on October 21, 2002.[14][24]
Siddiqui left for the U.S. on December 25, 2002, informing her ex-husband that she was looking for a job;[14] she returned on January 2, 2003.[7][14] Amjad later said he was suspicious of her explanation, as universities were on winter break.[52] The FBI linked her to an alleged al-Qaeda operative, Majid Khan, who they suspected of having planned attacks on gas stations and underground fuel-storage tanks in the Baltimore/Washington area. They said that the real purpose of her trip was to open a post office box, to make it appear that Majid was still in the U.S.[4][35][36][53][54] Siddiqui listed Majid Khan as a co-owner of the P.O. box.[3][24] The P.O. box key was later found in the possession of Uzair Paracha, who was convicted of providing material support to al-Qaeda, and sentenced to 30 years in federal prison in 2006.[14][55]
In February 2003, she married accused al-Qaeda member Ammar al-Baluchi, also known as Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, in Karachi.[16][20][34][53] Al Baluchi is a nephew of al-Qaeda leader Khalid Sheikh Mohammed,[3][16][53] and a cousin of Ramzi Yousef, convicted of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.[3][53][56] Siddiqui's marriage to al-Baluchi was denied by her family, but confirmed by Pakistani and U.S. intelligence,[57] a defense psychologist,[58] and by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's family.[28] She had worked with al-Baluchi in opening a P.O. box for Majid Khan, and says she married him in March or April 2003.[35][59][60] Al-Baluchi was arrested on April 29, 2003, and taken to the Guantanamo Bay military prison;[53] he faces the death penalty in his upcoming trial in the U.S., for aiding the 9/11 hijackers.[16]"

Whether or not Dr. Afia is innocent - I don't know.

We all have heard about her case through the media. Fair enough American media is not fair but neither is the Pakistani media.

As per Pakistani media, Benazir is a 'shaheed' and there is no investigation against her. Same media one day sides with Aitzaz, Mohammed Amir, Salman Butt, and Musharaf and then when convenient, turns its back to them.

Sorry for anybody who suffers and if rape story is true than that is very sad. But I am thinking this is masala news and I personally find something very fishy about Afia Siddiqui and her family's version.

    From what I see:
    - she was definitely invovled is some wrong doing otherwise why was she targetted?
    - she married an Al Qaeda linked man.
    - her ex husband has labelled her as impulsive and extremist.
    - her kids suffered because of her actions.

Look, there are million+ Pakistani women in USA - none are targetted by US so why was she?

We can talk about who else is guilty but that doesn't change the facts regarding Dr. Siddiqui.

What she did are hard facts and you can construct a profile:
    - Incredibly gifted in academics.
    - one of best jobs in her fields.
    - living in USA but with time became very religious (which is a good thing IMO).
    - under investigation for purchase of military hardware.
    - moves to Pak. Immediately after 9/11 (nobody in right mindset would have done this).

Look, the story of her shooting a marine maybe blown out of proportion but you can picture her trying to fight the marine and trying to pick a weapon. She is an American citizen and is charged fighting against American forces - that is very serious charge.

Finally, what do you think Pak. Can do? She is after all American and not a Pakistani citizen. I applaud Pak's efforts to lobby for her for sake of humanity and I personally feel she should be allowed to go under mental evaluation.

So I took it upon myself to study the District Court judgment against Aafia. The official story is that Aafia, while trying to attack the "Governor of Ghazni" in Afghanistan was seized by the Afghan police. Amongst her person being seized were some documents she was carrying that described "mass casualty attack" targets within the States.

She was then questioned by FBI and American forces on the scene. While she was being questioned, one of the officers set down his M-4 rifle to talk to an Afghan official, during which Aafia used the weapon to try and shoot the American persons. Apparently witnesses also heard her scream anti-American sentiments. She was subsequently sent to a hospital where she provided incriminating statement stating that she undertook the possession of the rifle to scare off the Americans and flee the scene. Not convinced?

That is exactly what the defense team relied on during her trial. The defense team put forth a forensic expert that said that Aafia did not gain control of the M-4 firearm. Since apparently there were no bullet fragments or gunpower residue recovered by atuhorized. an ANP(Afghan) officer who was not completely convinced of the shooting. The real game changer was though when Aafia decided to testify herself( a big NO for criminal defendants at trial).

The defense team understood that due to her mental state and condition and her prejudice against U.S. officials, she would expose herself to the jury under cross examination. The defense team even moved for a motion to prevent her from testifying, but she refused and told the judge she appreciated the risks. That was the ball game for the prosecution as she repeatedly went off on Anti-American rants in U.S. District Courtrooms, had contradictory testimony on possessing "mass plan" documents(at one point she said the documents could be hers because of the writing). The jury found an unsympathetic liar and convicted her.

A shame really. She had good legal counsel and if she had not testified maybe her fate would have been different. But extraordinary deference was still given to her statements at the crime scene, at the hospital bed where she was recovering and her statements to the Afghan police before the day she fired at American officials. The government had a plethora of witnesses to back all those statements. Aafia had one forensic expert going for her. Basically her violent outbursts and her past sealed the deal. She did not make any effort to rectify that image in court.

    Hope this helps.

Media can make one believe anything. I believe she is innocent, no need for any mental test, she has already 'lost it' mentally after the way in which she was treated in jail. She's an aalimah & a haafizah too,not the kind of woman her ex 'apparently' claims her to be. If a person is religous i don't think they can do any terrorist activities as it's NOT in accordance with islamic teachings. She was actively involved in dawah work, in America & used to distribute lots of islamic literature. Heard the story from her sister on local radio stations & she was in SA a while back too. Very heartbreaking indeed. The least we can do is to constantly include her in our duas in sha Allah. Allah knows best indeed!!!

Sure, one can't trust the articles posted by the media but we can't trust your gut feelings and her sister's claims either, right?

So she was convicted for 86 years because she was a bit confused in court after being tortured for a few years, great

Aafia Movement held vigil demo at Karachi press club release for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui on the occasion of her 10th birthday in US jail. 10 years too long: another birthday in unjust confinement. Another year of broken promises as Dr. Aafia Siddiqui languishing in an US jail for a crime she did not commit, her support continues to escalate. Her ordeal has provoked horror among humanitarians as basic human right violations continue to mount on this fragile yet resilient woman. How much can one endure? Knowing her innocence the evidence of crimes of her perpetrators is piling up. Crowds gather on Karachi press club to commemorate the 10 birthday of the daughter of the nation. People were chanting slogans mixed emotions were felt. There was love, there was anger, there was grief but most of allow there was a determined will filled with hope. In her telephonic speech, Dr. Fowzia said that the government is losing another very easy option to bring Aafia home where there are no legal hurdles. I do not see how our leaders can face the public for votes when they fail to achieve even this simple goal. Please this once seeks your daughter instead of dollars. Let us revive our honor one signature of the president can bring our sister home, if the will exists.

this case was sad. Apparently her baby died during the snatch and grab done by authorities.

There was no physical evidence that she shot that rifle. There were eye witness reports, but all of them were conflicting which puts them all into dispute.

What's with extremist groups and Dr. Siddiqui? Every time a hostage situation arises she is the first person they ask for in an exchange.

People with the right skillset and ideological inclination to make biological weapons don't grow on trees. Off course it could just be for humanitarian reasons, saving the bahu of Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, a godfather like figure in their world.

It's quite naive to think that she is innocent, but you still have to feel sorry for her. Lifetime imprisonment is horrific.

I dont think theres any doubt that she has links to terrorist groups and has been involved in them.

What could be possible is that the charges she was found guuilty on were framed.

The skillset you gain when you're educated to that standard goes far beyond your dissertation.
