It is indeed, sister. But Urdu and Punjabi possess their own beauty as well.

Yes you're right. I think Punjabi has to be my favourite language out of those spoken on the sub-continent Even though I can only understand bits of it

This thread reminds me of Lagey Raho Munna Bhai when Circuit tries to teach Munna Bhai some "heavy" hindi words like hirdeparivartan and durgati. Lol that was such a funny film

Yeah, that was a great film, and Sanjay Dutt is my most favourite Bollywood actor.

AFAIK, "istri" in hindi also means iron. I think you are referring to "stree" which means woman.

and for the bolded part... modesty tho koi aap se seekhe... you apparently know urdu, punjabi, hindi, pashto and arabic... and still you got complaints ???

In my opinion Urdu is the most beautiful language of the subcontinent. It has a grace and subtlety that I find simply enchanting.

I'm taking this thread in a somewhat different direction, but hopefully people will find it interesting. Bambiya Hindi, or the Hindi spoken in Mumbai. It has gained popularity after Bollywood movies started to use it liberally.

It is direct, picturesque and very very funny.

    Starting here:

Abey, dimag ka dahi mat kar or Usne dimaag ka dahi bana diya, yaar:

Literally, Don't curdle my brains, or He curdled my brains. Used to described someone so boring that he or she turns your brain into curds/ mush.

Now if you want that same boring fellow to ****** off, you tell him:

Jaane dey, thodi hawa aane dey

Literally it means: Let it go, let some wind blow.

Imagine yourselves in a group with a guy who's boring the heck out of you. So you tell him to go, so that the open space thus created 'lets some air in'.

It can be used as banter, and the fellow you say it to usually takes very little offence.

Or you could tell the same boring guy:

    Mujko Pakaa mat be tu

Literally: Don't 'cook me' overmuch, or don't overcook.

Basically the meaning is that the person is boring you by repeating the same thing, or saying the same thing ad nauseaum (pakaa raha hai).

Then there's the use of the cricketing word 'fielding', popularized by the Mumbai mafia.

When teams were sent to kill someone, usually a group of people from that team would stalk the target to report his movements before the actual assassin went in to 'finish the job'.

    Thus the group was 'fielding'.

Used as in "Uski fielding kar rahe hain log?".

Talking about Mumbaiya tapori hindi, this video is a much watch. It's funny as hell and Govinda is simply outstanding in this. BTW, if you have not seen the movie, do watch it. It's one of the funniest movies ever:
