    Learning Persian/Farsi

Any Farsi speakers on PP, who could help myself and others get acquainted with this beautiful language?

I understand that there are many words in Urdu, which have the same meaning or at least derived from Farsi.

E.g. In Urdu guftaghoo means conversation and I think in Farsi goft means to say or tell.

Janesheenay in Farsi means successor and janesheen is the urdu word.

Shab-a-Khair means good night in both Urdu and Farsi and agar means if in both languages.

Ok, that is as far as my knowledge of Farsi goes (someone please correct, if anything that I've said is incorrect), unfortunately.

Urdu borrows extensively from Farsi. That said, the similarity is only in the written form. The original Farsi pronunciation is so different from the Farsi version coming out of the lips of people in Pakistan when they are reciting say Ghalib or Iqbal that it can be taken as a completely different language.

Indeed. To the extent that Mr. Jullandhari wrote our national anthem in Urdu, but there is only ONE word in the whole anthem that's not actually a Farsi word too!

Or so they say...I'm not a Farsi-dan myself...

I know a few Farsi speakers and I tried learning from them but its not easy. Still, beautiful to hear. I was in a park a couple of weeks ago and there were some ladies outside a prayer room speaking in Farsi and woow, had me hooked even though I could hardly understand.

    I know some beautiful phrases in Farsi;

    Pak sar zameeen shaad baad.
    Kishwaray haseen shaad baad
    Tu nishan-e-azmein aali shaan
    Arz-e-Pakistan
    Markazay yaqeen shaad baad.

    Paksarzameen ka nizam
    Quwwat-e-Akhoowat-e- awam
    Qaum, mulk, saltanat
    Pa inda tabinda baad
    Shaad baad manzalay murad.

    Parchamay sitar-o- hilal
    Rehbaray tariqqiyon ka maal
    (my fav lines)
    Tarjumanay maazi shaanay haal
    Jaan-e- Istaqbaal.
    Saayay khudayay Zuljalal.

i do have a smattering of persian(irani dialect).the vocabulary of this language is quite extensive and varied.
yes you said something wrong.'goft' means 'said',the past tense.to say will be 'goftan'.
actually every verb in persain ends with 'tan ' or 'dan'.
    examples:
    khordan-to eat
    navishtan-to write.
    kardan-to do
    nosheedan-to drink
    purseedan-to ask
andakhtan-to throw.it actually has a far wider meaning than this.

Are you saying just add " an " or " dan " to every Urdu word ?

Khordan ? Dostum ? Hastum ? Kardan ? That makes Persian easy .
