Angelo Mathews - Performance Watch
I could not find any thread on him here. Maybe I didn't search well enough.
But I really like his allround abilities. He is good with the bat, takes wickets and ise of the best fielders in the world. Who can forget his spectacular catch in the World T20 in England last year.
I feel he can be one of the hits in the upcoming world T20 alongside Umar Akmal.
You guys rate him?

I rate him quite highly but he's only going to be a limited over specialist unless he can improve his batting drastically. Should have a good time of it in the WI WC.

I'm not sure people understand how HUGE the gulf is between first class and Test cricket, even Sarfraz averaged 44 in FC cricket with the bat but in international ODIs and T20s he can barely get bat on ball.

He is good all rounder.
But he is not a Big Hitter which goes negative for him
And his bowling speed is also not express enough to make him some thing special in bowling.
Razaq is ahead of him (although not miles) in batting for 20/20 and ODIs. While in bowling too Razzaq is almost equal to him.Last edited by Alam_dar; 16th March 2010 at 22:25.

Well the Sri Lankans have a better standard of cricket than our motley crew of FTBs
Mathews Test batting ave is 37.90 after 7 matches, not at all bad for an all-rounder

SL have a marginally better first class set up but there isn't a huge difference, they get most of their talent coming through an excellent grassroots system where school and club cricket are popular and heavily promoted.
What I'm trying to say is that Test cricket does what it says on the tin, it gives a stern examination of a players qualities which aren't tested at lower levels, i.e temperment, technique against genuine pace/quality spin, different conditions in different countries etc.

He's a very good player. Got a 99 against India in a test match. Lighting in the field. Don't you remember the inning he played against pak in the T20 final.

He's developing into a pretty handy one day player. Can hold his own with both bat and bowl averaging 35 at a decent strike rate and a sub 30 bowling average. Going to be one of the players of the upcoming world cup imo.
His T20I figures are just as impressive.

-

Looks a decent player at best at moment, has the ability to develop into a top class player. Needs to improve his batting alot more, seems get stuck in a rut when batting sometimes and oppostion at times can close down his main scoring areas quite easily he then struggles to work the ball around.

That was one hell of a knock. Perfect, no risky shots, wristy flicks, picked the gaps in the field and played the bowlers accordingly. Time for Umar Akmal to take note, but that would be expecting too much.

Strike rate hasn't been great. 78 odd after 113 deliveries is quite poor. Has been a Misbah-eque knock so far but can make up for it in the last 3 overs.

Angelo Mathews Strike Rate
Angelo Mathews played a similar innings to Misbah today and in last match and he often does.
But his team still manages to score good totals. So is it due to low SR (a philosophy that he plays too many balls and leaves little for the others to do something) or is it due to good competent players around him.
W63 has given many examples of Morgan, Bailey, Brendon Taylor, Owais Shah, Ravi Bopara (though one-offs in their entire careers) , so what about this example, Mr. W63L35?

-

He can make up for it at the end and his partners bat at a very good rate.
"Don't just raise the standard, be the standard."
-
26th August 2014, 19:35 #73
He has cost the team 10-15 runs, but not often do batsmen bat like Perera did today so he has made up for him.
-
26th August 2014, 19:36 #74
A strike rate of 80 after facing 100+ balls is rubbish. It should be at least 95.

Except that Matthews RARELY does this. For Misbah, this would be a high SR.
Matthews did waste a lot of deliveries where he should have found singes and doubles, but this is the exception to how he usually plays.
As usual, one match all of a sudden defines careers.
-
26th August 2014, 19:41 #77
great innings. Showed he can consolidate when needed too. Without him SL might have been all out for less than 250.

Sixth 90 for Mathews. This guy should have a honours board at SLC for his 90s. Very well played.
