Subcontinental Teams: Who has Played Better So Far?
Teams from Subcontinent have failed to impress so far in the early couple of weeks of WC. India, Pakistan, SL and Bangladesh have all looked below par. The spinners have failed to make a mark and all the teams are struggling with their combination. Which team do you think will go the longest distance in this competition?
For me SL and Pakistan look better sides because their bowling attacks are more balanced. India has once again disappointed. Their bowling is a big concern. BD will be luck to quilify for QF and dont see them making any further progress. What do you think? |

What is really surprising to me is that the spinners from subcontinent teams have not made a mark (apart from Afridi), while spinners from other teams are doing quite well...

I think SL has been the best so far, even in that defeat to Pakistan they came close to us. Where as we are thrashed by NZL.
There is no need to discuss India in this thread.

a very good question.
I think its between us & SL, we have shown quality in both disciplines so far. and since we beat them, I'll go for Pak

BD will be out in group stages.. Ind & Pak qualify for SF,, dont see both of them beating Aus/SA.
SL looks good to me to go all the way to the finals |

I think Indian batting is rock solid consistently scored 300. Indian bowling can be handful on a given day if pitch conditions favor them. No team has played exceptionally well but still Indian is hot favorites on their ground. Will go for semis atleast

Group A has been disappointing so far. Koi to ek close game hone do udhar
![]() Group B is where the "Box Office" has been as David Gower keeps calling it. Jokes apart, as the OP says, all the sub continental teams are still undecided about their final combination. SL cannot seem to decide whom to play in their middle order or who their 2nd pacer and 2nd spinner should be. Pakistan too have had issues with their pacers and I have a feeling even the openers may get changed come the knock outs. India, well quite disappointing especially Dhoni's leadership. Somehow he hasn't been his usual attacking self either with the bat, with his field placements or even the bowling combinations. |

What happened to the Spin factory in India. How come we don't see any quality spinners from them?? May be Indian PPers can elaborate.
Also I think IPL has done harm to India cricket, as we can witness. All they are producing are T20 style batsmen, with no quality fast bowler or spinner. |

IPL too has played its part. Someone like Amit Mishra or even Pragyan Ojha, both good talents, haven't moved to the next level despite playing international cricket for 2-3 years. During the off season, they obviously have no motivation to work hard with easy money from IPL guarateeing a safe future. Having said that, Ashwin looks to be a genuine talent and needs to be nurtured properly. Looks to be a lambi race ka ghoda |

India have played on extremely flat tracks which have made their batsmen, at times, look like demons (apart from the collapse against the Saffies) but their bowling has also been woefully exposed.
Both Sri Lanka and Pakistan have played on tougher wickets. The colombo track has offered more turn then any of the Indian wickets and this wicket in Kandy has done the lot! Bounce, swong, seam and some spin too!! So although the batting has struggled at times I think both Sri Lanka and Pakistan have shown they are stronger allround teams. Not much to choose between Sri Lanka and Pakistan only that we've beaten them so ofcourse logically Pakistan would be the better subcontinent team... |

Whoever voted for India is flat out lying or is delusional, We couldn't win the match against England after scoring almost 350 and lost against South africa and our batsmen gave 9 wickets for 29 runs. Pakistan's performance has been good other than the New zealand match

We can see it in an other way also :which asian team other teams would like to avoid in QF ?
The answer for me is pretty straight forward : India . I say this coz of the massive fear their batting order cast on the opposition . Last edited by sohailmm; 14th March 2011 at 19:01. |

SL has played well both with the bat and bowl
we only won the first 3 games because of afridi

I think other than the game against NZ, Pak has been exceeding expectations, SL has been meeting expectation and India has definitely been under performing. I think Bangladesh has been doing well too but I don't expect them to go beyond QFs.

So far-
Pakistan=Sri Lanka> Bangladesh > India Honest opinion, India is the only one from this group not to have defeated a decent team. We haven't peaked yet, saving the best for the knock outs

All of the south asian teams could do better. If they don 't improve in certains aspect of their game then most of them may well be put out in the QF unless they play each other.

India need to secure their bowling to leak less runs, Pak need to drop shezad for shafiq and umar akmal coming back in unless he feels really moody then he can be sent home. stick with riaz instead of akhtar who has run out of steam the rawalpindi express needs to be scrapped.

All 4 teams have massive holes to fill in their lineups..
India has a huge problem with bowling ..although I must say Zaheer Khan looks awesome.. Srilanka has a problem with their middle and lower order batting and I think that will cost them in the end... Pakistan has a problem with Keeping, and top order and to an extent Razzaq Bangladesh is very inconsistent .... I think they all havent done as well as they should have.. considering they are playing in home conditions... |

In this tournament, it's not so much of a worry with your obvious flaw. It's when your strength starts failing. India's batting has looked rock solid in this world cup so far. As long as they keep putting 300+ scores, they've got a very good chance of winning really. Pakistan the problem is they're bowling hasn't been up to scratch in places. Conceded too many against New Zealand. Our extra spinner,ajmal/Rehman hasn't looked effective. Akhtar has been on and off. Razzaq's been on and off too. I'm still not sure on these pitches, a strong bowling attack can cover over the cracks of a batting attack. But if our bowling attack isn't looking perfect, there's serious doubts we can win this. India's batting hasn't really put a foot wrong. Their bowling has let them down. Sri Lanka have looked ordinary in my opinion. We will see how they perform against New Zealand. Against Pakistan, their bowling was decent. But Pakistan outbowled and outbatted them that game. If it were not for our fielding, we may have won by a considerable margin. The best batting I've seen has been by India. Best bowling I've seen has been by South Africa (who have limited teams to low scores, even their spinners seem to be performing). Team wise
India>SL>Pakistan>Bangladesh Now based on performance shown compared to expected... India did not do too much justice, should have won all their matches... Pakistan did not do too well either, Altho it managed to defeat SL but Lanka did not field a full strength side. And loss against NZ in subcontinent conditions is just bad SL is doing the best, they played well in almost all the matches, lost to Pak but then again did not field their best 11 Bangladesh bowling has been outstanding but batting has been below par... they won 3 matches which i guess was what most people in bangladesh hoped for. Hoping they reach the QF but cannot go further for sure... SL>IN>PAK>BD |

Lets cut Pakistan some slack. They are the only SC team which is not playing on home grounds, under home conditions and crowd.

well pak did defeat a major test side, but they also too good ass whipping from a major test team, then their batting failed miserably against a minnow side,If it was not for afridi and luck from the umpire.
Srilanka did lode to pak ,but it was not a heavy defeat, Malinga could have made a difference. So i would still say Srilanka is tops followed by India. |

I think no one has impressed if you talk about overall game.
If INdian openers have flourished, Pak's openers have been abysmal, Sri Lanka has done goo din opening. Bowling wise, India has lacked wicket-taking ability, whereas Pak and Sri Lanka has looked stronger in glimpses. Bangladesh has at least shown a lot of grit and character to hang in there. Fileding wise Sri Lankans have been much better than others, so I am kind of really confused whether these teams have really done well, I think jury is still out on this!

India is a hype due to its batting, but, is it a world class team like the Aussies and Windies of the past, they are not a shoadow of those teams, let alone a strong team. For a team to be strong, it has to be rock solid in all departments of the game to roll over any side any day of the year, most times than not.
