Pakistan can take India over in both forms if you look at the amount of games both nations have played, infact India has played the most games in both ODI's and Tests out of all nations I think, A few good performances and I think Pakistan will easily overtake.

When they lose at test cricket, its ODIs that matter. When they are higher ranked than pak (rarely), the ICC table is everything. When they fall below Pak, the ICC table is rubbish and they talk of record against Aus. When theyve got nothing left someone mentions the world cup clashes.. yawn

I know, it sucks. But everyone knows that India are the 4th team at best regardless what the ICC ranking tells you.

india deserve to be higher in odis for my money (maybe no.2 or tied for no.2)...but in tests, no way should they be above pak. they have been pathetic in tests starting from the aus series in india to the recent beatings in pakistan and then the mumbai fiasco against england.

for me, test rankings are aus, eng, pak, ind and then the rest...pak v eng this summer should effectively decide the official contenders to aus' crown.

How difficult is it to understan that ICC takes teams performance fr last 4 yrs into consideration..india has lost only 2 series lately, both close one's 1-2 against aus n 0-1 to pak..pakisatn are n better form, agreed ..if they continue to show the same form in future ,it will show n the rankings too...!

They deserve the odi spot, not sure abt tests though. but rankings are seldom totally fair. They're playing well, so gotta give em credit for the odi's at least. Unless their youngsters crumble under pressure of playing at the biggest stage, I think they'll be a force to reckon with in next year's World Cup.

In my totally, completely, comprehensively unbiased opinion I think we are still no2 test side.

If you are going to say Pakistan are suddenly better than England because of one home series, we could then have said straight after the ashes that England are suddenly better than Australia because of one home series (which some silly eople did- argh). But everyone clued up on their cricket knew the latter wasnt true at the time, I dont see why the former has much more right to be true.

You have to look at what England have done in all other test series except the Pakistan one, since the start of 2004. Relatively speaking all our results except that, have been very good. For now its safe to say England had an off series in Pakistan.

Heres a quick note for angry and insecure people - I am not saying Pakistan didn't count. Of course it counted.

I am just offering a theory that everyone has an off series and it doesnt make anyone a worse team. Two or three off series is when you should start to worry and we havent had that in tests at all.

I wouldn't come out and say England are the second best side in the world, as it's far too difficult to call... but I do think they still deserve the number 2 ranking based on past achievements like the series win in South Africa, the Ashes and the draw in India. Pakistan could do with beating England away and having a solid series in South Africa before they can claim to be the undisputed number 2's.

India could do with winning a series outside India.

I agree with Whippy, England are the number 2 test side in the World... we can't claim to be better than them unless we beat them away in the summer.

Results this summer may well make Pakistan no2 test team, even if that wouldnt be reflected in the rankings everyone would know they would be no2 then.

However they are doing everything right at the moment, you cnat take that away from them. They are winning home and away, they are building the kind of run that Australia and England have in the last few years. Signs can only be good for Pakistani cricket

Two places where I really want to see Pakistan perform well are SA and Australia. We have underachieved on both of the previous tours to these countries.

if Pak win against England in the summer, the next thing everyone will say is, they havent beaten Aus like India did in 1821 and england did in the summer... etc etc

You need to recognise the quality cricket Pak is playing right now and the momentum is with us

Are you kidding me? India is third in tests as well? They do not deserve to be third in tests, no way should they be ranked higher than Pakistan. In ODIs, they have a superior side than us, that I will agree with the Indians. Now only if the World Cup was a test match instead of ODIS...nahh, that would go on for months.

no point getting caught up in who's second. pakistan, though playing well, still have some areas that need to be improved drastically before they can claim to be a finished product. the openers are still struggling to convince everyone that they deserve the top spot. apart from mohd asif, the remaining back-up pacers have been below par in test cricket. we're really counting on akhtar to lead from the front and any further injury to him, or to danish kaneria for that matter, may leave our bowling attack exposed. the batting failed twice in two tests against sri lanka, something that must be worrying for inzi. i'm not sure the team management is convinced what our starting eleven should be right now. conclusion - lets get our house in order and let LG or whoever it is that does the rankings worry about who's #2. wins will come if we continue to address our weaknesses, something we've done very well over the last year and a bit.
