Bilal Shafayat *12th Man *

he is not in 13 Man Squad of England but he was Fielding in place of Swann in the 1st test Match in Ashes Series .England did the same in 2005 Ashes Series .

is this Allowed or there is any rule about it ???

12th man is not a substitute fielder. He is just there to enjoy and carry drinks. Substitue fielding can be done by anyone. England brings specailist fielders or couple of players who are good at it from the county team of the ground they play the match on

It would have been hilarious if they brought on Gary Pratt as a sub fielder, especially when Ponting was batting.

I would have stuck him at point.

Bilal Shafayat had been mentioned as a future England prospect a while ago, although that seems less likely now.

For a while he was a competent wicketkeeper/batsmen.

Also plays domestic cricket in Pakistan.

Just saw on his cricinfo profile that it was his birthday yesterday. Perhaps this was his birthday present, that he got to field in the ashes?

In all seriousness though, it's perfectly within England's rights to use him as a fielder if they ask the umpire and he agrees.

It's the same for both teams and it's not if the umpires are being biased to who gets the fielders and who doesn't. Ponting can do the same thing in the field if he wishes to.

Maybe they just tried to do what they did in 2005 with Gary Pratt!

He came on as a fielder (wasnt 12th man) and ended up running out Ponting....really got under the Aussie's noses!
They were desperate for anything which reminded them of 2005 perhaps.

Read some stats on him just now , Looks a Real Good Prospect for England but then why is he being played as a 12th man for while now , If England do loose this one then I would want to see this guy play in the next match as he may help them a great deal with the bat and ball.

No Offense to the guy but man he looks my Local Maulvi , other then that he has really a great smile

you can always watch county games if SKY is broadcasting their county's match. Then there is radio commentary of county games which you can get from BBC site and you can learn a bit from there.

Good performance by Bilal as 12th man, wasted some valuable time and helped England earn a draw.

Ha! Billy's done it all this year - 12th man for England, stand-in wicket-keeper for Nottinghamshire, lower order batsman, opening batsman. He used to be a really bright talent but he probably won't even get another contract with us when his runs out at the end of the year. He has been rubbish this year with the bat, to be honest.

If Pakistan had done what England did yesterday there would have been an outcry to have pakistan banned from playing Test Cricket. Remember Karachi test when Pakistan were trying to slow the over rate. When Strauss did it on Saturday nobody said a word apart from some booing from aussie fans.

I think you are just making things up.

There has been plenty of discussion as to England's tactics. A lot of commentators not feeling comfortable with what Strauss 'may' have done, although he says it was simply down to confusion.

Ive seen a lot worse - usually from Ponting!

And Eng know how to wind him up, so I'm OK with it

... But the controversy most likely to linger was the involvement of Bilal Shafayat and Steve McCaig, the England 12th man and physiotherapist, who made appearances in the 102nd and 103rd overs of the innings despite scant evidence that the batsmen, Jimmy Anderson and Monty Panesar, called upon their services. Shafayat ran gloves and water to the batsmen - receiving a none too subtle chirp from Ponting for his troubles - while McCaig briefly checked on their physical condition at a time when Australia was desperately pressed for time to claim a victory that, barely an hour before, appeared an inevitability....

"I don't think it was required, he changed [the gloves] the over before and I don't think they'd be too sweaty in one over," Ponting said. "I'm not sure what the physio was doing out there. I didn't see anyone call for the physio to come out....

Andrew Strauss, the England captain, denied his side had contravened the spirit of cricket, insisting that the reasons for Shafayat's presence on the playing field in the dying moments of the game were legitimate.

"There was a lot of confusion, to be fair," Strauss said. "We first of all sent the 12th man out to let Jimmy and Monty know there was time left, and not the overs. Then there was drink spilled on Jimmy's gloves, and he called up to the dressing room and we weren't sure if he needed 12th man or physio. If Ricky is upset, that's a shame.
