I was going to make this thread after 15 overs of the Indian innings......
I was going to rave about how proud I was about our bowlers. I was going to say how proud I was of our young pace attack. Over after over there were wonderful deliveries that I marvelled at and I thought to myself "This is genuine cricket. This is how it should be played. Bowlers bowling well. Batsmen in for the fight. Awesome stuff."
I was going to title the thread "I don't care what happens in this match now, this has been wonderful to watch." Alas, I had taken too long, the game was back on, and I thought "nah, forget it" and ran back to the TV, making sure not to mis a moment. I sit here now, with the memory of that period tarnished. Rana Naved pretty much single handedly lost us that game. I know the "experts" will rant and rave about Dhoni's brilliance and how he took the game away from Pakistan. The fact of the matter is, Dhoni simply accepted what was handed to him by Rana Naved and Inzamam's decision to persist with him. That one over, it was all gone. We were in the hunt, and Naved comes back to bowl, bowling short and wide. Any batsmen worth the weight of his pads would put that rubbish away. I'm not upset that India won. That's why I felt the way I did earlier. I'm upset because we lost the game more than they won it. In a pressure situation, we served it up on a platter and India graciously accepted. And as if to rub salt into the wounds. Inzamam brought back Razzaq and Asif, only when it mattered least. The only thing left to do was tarnish some bowling figures, and erase the memories of some magical bowling that restored my faith in the beast that is the Pakistani Pace Attack. It upsets me that I can't be proud of Asif's bowling anymore because it was all for not. It was all set up so his teammates (and leadership) could let him down. |
