Bowling Coach to Be Named Before Sri Lanka Tour

KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) committee, formed to finalise the bowling coach, has announced that it will convene a meeting this week to shortlist candidates ahead of the Sri Lanka series.

As Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed the itinerary for the Pakistan series, which comprises two Twenty20s, five One-Day Internationals (ODI) and three Tests, the PCB is also gearing up in finalising the preparations for the tour.

Intikhab Alam, who heads the coach-hunt committee, said that the new bowling coach will be named before the Sri Lanka tour. “We’ll convene a meeting this week,” Alam told The Express Tribune. “It will be crucial since we’ll shortlist the candidates. Hopefully, we’ll complete the process and announce the coach within a couple of weeks.”

The post was left vacant following Aqib Javed’s move to become the UAE head coach after the England series. Pakistan then featured in the Asia Cup without a bowling coach with Sarfraz Nawaz holding a brief camp for the pacemen before the team’s departure to Dhaka.

Despite the triumph, a poor performance by the pacemen led to calls for the quick appointment of a bowling coach but Alam hinted that the new appointee should be able to get enough time with the team in the training camp ahead of the Sri Lanka series.

Around 11 candidates have applied for the post. According to reports, the list includes Ian Pont, a former Bangladesh bowling coach, Bazeegh Zaka, the Maldives coach, and former Pakistan players Jalaluddin, Mohsin Kamal, Sabih Azhar and Mohammad Akram and Mushtaq Ahmed. Alam said the committee will ‘finalise the best candidate irrespective of nationality’.

If they're going for an all foreign coaching team then Ian Pont seems the most likely option. Amongsts the locals, Sabih Azhar has worked with the U19's, he's the most committed, Jalauddin, is the most qualified and Mohammad Akram, is probably the most talked about. I'd say Sabih Azhar looks like a good bet.

Before Sri Lanka tour. But before or after the likely pre-training camp?

If they go any slower they are likely to stop.

Good to see the new bowling coach will get time ahead of the Sri Lanka series. Finally with Whatmore, Fountain and hopefully Pont the team will be well coached and prepared. Pont is the type of coach who encourages a bowler to not sacrifice his pace for the sake of 'line and length'. We lack a fiery, tearaway, explosive new ball bowler.

They haven't even shortlisted the candidates yet?

Didn't the application deadline pass 5 weeks ago? What have they been doing for the last 5 weeks?

He teaches how to bowl faster and more accurately. People are always afraid of things they don't understand. So I guess that rival coaches are jealous. However, if you visit his website I found when researching him: www.maverickscricket.com you will read more about what he does. It doesn't sound complex to me.

Ian Pont is the guy who will instill confidence into our bowlers by telling them to "bowl fast or die trying! Pakistan don't do well with conventional coaches who tell them to stick to their basics such as line and length. They need someone nurturing them to tell them to stick with their abilities to bowl fast which is important as rightly PPers above have said that we need tearaway fast bowler!!!!!!!

Question is, will the PCB pay the right money to get this guy? If he is one of the best around then we ought to pay him very well?

Intikhab Alam, who heads the board committee set up to recommend a bowling coach for the national team, confirmed to PTI that the appointment would be made before the camp begins in Lahore.

"We will shortlist the candidates this week and then give the names to the Chairman (of the PCB, Zaka Ashraf) to take a final decision and negotiate with the prospective candidate," Alam informed.

Alam said that the committee is keen on having the bowling coach before the camp starts so that he could work with the bowlers during the camp and also establish an understanding with Whatmore and fielding coach, Julian Fountain.

According to sources, Pakistan`s former Test leg-spinner, Mushtaq Ahmed, who has worked with the England team as a bowling consultant, has emerged as the frontrunner, as he himself is keen to get back into Pakistan cricket.

Another candidate, who has good chance of bagging the job, is former Test pacer Mohammad Akram.

But Mushtaq appears to have an edge since he has already met the PCB Chairman twice.
