Fast bowler Irshad invited to Pakistan team’s camp

By: Haroon Siddiqi | May 16, 2012 |LAHORE –

http://www.nation.com.pk/pakistan-ne...an-team-s-camp

The Pakistan national team’s head coach has asked fast bowler M Irshad on Monday to attend the Pakistan team camp being commenced here for the preparations of Sri Lanka series at the Gaddafi Stadium from Wednesday (today).

This was revealed by the fast bowler M Irshad during a formal chat with this scribe on cell phone on Tuesday. He said that he had attended practice session held on Monday at the National Cricket Academy in which coach Dav Whatmore was also present and praised his bowling, accuracy and speed and gave him some tips to improve his bowling. “Whatmore praised my bowling, accuracy and speed and given me some tips to boost speed and accuracy,” Irshad said. According to Irshad, he was selected for Pakistan team for Test and One-day squads many times in the past and did not get chance to be inducted into the final playing XI. “I attended many national team camps and impressed selectors with my bowling skills that helped for selection in Pakistan team in the past but failed to make my way in the final playing XI,” he stated. Presently he is representing the United Bank Ltd (UBL) in the domestic cricket and performing well but failed to catch eyes of selectors for his selection in the national team again. Irshad vowed to make a comeback in the Pakistan squad again after his good performances in the domestic cricket.

He said the injury problems kept him out of training but now he was fully fit and working hard to make his way back to get a place in the Pakistan team as he had regained full fitness.

A blast from the past! He was really hyped a few years ago. That was the time when Irshad, Najaf Shah, and Abdur Rauf were considered the next great bowlers.

He was bowling in the high 90's and was pipped for a place in the team but no Mr Action changer had other ideas.

We seem obsessed with players who are past their sell by date. Last time I saw him in action he was overweight.

Yeah I remember this guy, he once said he clocked mid-90s with his long run-up. He then changed his run-up and says he hits 90mph consistently.

He's not that fast now. He virtually is a carbon copy of Shoaib in terms of run up and maybe aggression. However, that's where the similarities end or did the last time I saw him.

He may have lost some weight and if so there is something there to work with because he still quite pacy.

It's a bad and depressing trend how we don't give bowlers with potential a chance until they're in the twilight of their careers.

That certainly is a blast from the past.

Really lost his way due to injuries and hasn't played much first class cricket of late either.

The guy is only 28. He will be at his peak for 4 more years. Pick him now.

You never know when a guy will be a Stuart Clarke or Vern Philander & just take to tests like a duck to water.

He strikes me as the type of cricketer who has not looked after his fitmess or diet.
He may or may not be still 28 but he had the figure of a guy much older.

They'd be wiser to concentrate on Zia-Ulhaq, Talha and co. but as things are in Pakistani cricket these days they only consider you when retirement looms.

He's there for practice and to bowl to the players that are going to Sri Lanka.

His being at the camp is not that he is close to selection really.

He's probably there as training camp fodder for the batsmen. They probably don't want to risk injury to the main bowlers by having them bowl to the batsmen a lot.

Wouldnt be close to selection but if he bowls well in the nets, could be considered. No harm in that.

Tried finding a video. The closest i got was a friendly match.

It seems the bowler at 1:05 might be Irshad. Action seems similar to Shoaib Akhtar.
