Always difficult to stomach news like this. Disgusting.
But the true 'scale of sexual abuse by UK police officers' is not mentioned in the article, which is a typical Guardian tactic in their anti-establishment crusade, so I will make the effort to do so instead: 56 cases in four years out of 140,000 officers is the smallest of small minorities (0.04%). Threatening and criminal sexual behaviour in most spheres and walks of life around the world is probably observed at higher than that level. I credit the Guardian for reporting it at all, though; as the OP highlights nobody else has done so. 837 corruption cases overall is even more of a worry of course. What's true, as observed by Mark Daly in 'The Secret Policeman', is that the educational and medical requirements to enter the police force are hardly strict nowadays and this is why we get the very occasional racist, rapist and deviant worming his way in. Thus, these few primitive and moronic officers should be rooted out and convicted according to the legal system as soon as possible, and greater care should be taken with regards to who can and cannot become a policeman in future. |
