Fauja Singh insulted on Indian Comedy Show [Apology Issued]
I agree with Sikhchannel here, a pretty disgusting sketch, not only making fun of a inspirational devout Sikh who is over 100 years old but ridiculing the crimes against the Sikhs in 1984. Anyone think it's funny and the Sikhs in the UK are over-reacting? Last edited by freelance_cricketer; 4th August 2012 at 04:01. |

Can't view the video now, but utterly shameful if it made fun of 1984.
Regarding Fauja Singh, saw some FB "campaigns" ridiculing Indian media for not covering Fauja Singh when he ran with the Olympic torch. I don't like this YouTube show either, it makes mostly cheap sexual jokes and calls itself "Jai Hind". |

This was just a laughter show KKWC, Fauja Singh is an icon for Indians and is respected everywhere,

The joke goes along the lines of 'he's still running since 1984'. Many Sikhs in the UK are outraged, this man is loved not only by Sikhs but all British people. Tell that to the Sikhs here FC.

That was very cheap. Such idiots should not be allowed to host a show. That guy should just stick to sexual jokes.

Isn't Fauja Singh the guy who is still running marathons and is about 100 years old ?
Pretty tasteless jokes. Infact here he is, would love to be able to get around at that age, heck I can't move around like him right now, let alone at age 100+.

It's not about him being a legend, say he was just an ordinary bloke does that make the joke okay? No.
These guys should be penalized for this, big time.

Not as massively as by the Balwant Singh Rajoana case, but the e-Sikhs are quite pissed off by that "joke", more about the Tytler-1984 reference than Fauja Singh himself, obviously.

I doubt if such a show would have got away if it was aired on Television. This is an Internet only show. I wonder if there are laws to punish such shows in India.

Ok, it was a bad joke overall.
To me the joke seems to be more on the Indian Govt and their inability to protect minorities. Some of these channels should learn to be how to be politically correct from CNN, BBC etc. |

That's pretty uncalled for.
Parts of that video were incredibly offensive considering past history. Tasteless jokes are part and parcel of comedy skits, but this one did sneak over the line.

Wait, I dont understand why a comedy skectch by a cheap channel needs to be taken as an insult. Why are we Indians so insecure about our identity and and our idols? In US serials like South Park poke fun at everything from religious figures to Presidents to celebrities but no one complains and the shows are a huge hit. This thing of putting someone up on a pedestal so much is a very Indian thing. So what if some cheap channel wants to get cheap laughs, how can it dent India's or the famous figure's image even by an iota?
We have to stop being so insecure and have freedom of media to the extent possible. We cannot pick and chose what is ok to make fun at and whats not, becuase in a country like India, with such variety of culture and relgion and ideas, something, somewhere will always offend someone. So we have to decide whether we be a country which takes everything too seriously and cannot laugh at itself or we are a country where everyone has freedom to laugh and poke fun at everything. Either everything is ok to make fun of, or nothing is. We have to stop being so insecure about everything, a show making fun of Fauja Singh will not be diminishing his ahcievements in any way. And as usual its the NRIs who seem to be the most 'outraged'

Didn't watch the clip, but from what I've read, it is in extremely bad taste.
It is one thing to put public/historical figures under the "fair game for humor" category, quite another to try to evoke humor out of an unfortunate event which resulted in death of thousands of people. That being said, some people's response on FB hasn't been graceful either. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

@Indiafan,
Have to agree with N_H here. What is OK for the West may not be OK for us. We have a history of politicians/crooks fanning sentiments which leads to violence. We are a very diverse and emotional society, and we have to be cautious when dealing with some subjects. Something like South Park will lead to weekly vandalism, if not riots, in India. Let us reach the US standards of education and law and order first, before we think of reaching their standards on humour. Again, freedom of speech does not mean freedom to offend, particularly on tragic issues like 1984. Reminds me of Vir Sanghvi, the crook of a journalist, saying that stopping himself from saying Sikh Jokes is an infringement over his right to free speech. It is one thing to curb artistic freedom (which also has its merits in a society like India), but this show is of gutter level, and has to be taken to task. We can't afford such shows which threaten our social harmony. The cheap laughs gained over a tragedy is not worth it. |

Wish people would be this vocal when Indian media mocks others such as Blacks or dark skinned people, the LGBT community, and at times to an extent western citizens as well.
If we are going to have a norm, then the norm must be for all no matter how vocal or not the community. |

Watched the clip. Actually rather than making fun of the victims, it was a satirical take on the event. If anything, it mocked religious fundamentalism within India.
However, with the way SC people are - overly emotional and touchy, the show should have known better to not just delve on the topic at all. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Indaifan and RWAC ...
If the show did a similar sketch with Sachin Tendulkar running after a ball in on the cricket field and then added a comment of 'running since Mumbai 2008' would you still find no issues with it? or How about A Jew 'running since the holocaust 1945'? |

If they took a jab at Pakistani terrorists/how unsafe Mumbai is/how inept the government is at protecting its citizens. Totally okay. If they took a jab at Hitler/how the world a blind eye while the Holocaust was happening. Totally okay. Like I said, if you watch the clip carefully and analyze each line, he was highlighting the unfortunate nature of those events. Now if people want to spread this on FB as this guy said "running since 1984" and twist the purpose behind it entirely, then of course it's going to sound bad. I affirm my stand again - Indians are not mature enough to take satire. Better stay away from controversial topics. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Although i find it a poor joke, it's true that the video in OP has been taken out of context. The remaining portion hasn't been shown in it which completes the whole picture and makes you understand the story they wanted to tell through this ridiculous joke.

Firstly the OP has nothing to do with Freedom of Speech. Is the comedian in the OP oppressed? Seems to me he’s free to insult Fauja Singh. Secondly, even if we grant your notion, Freedom of Speech comes with responsibility and morality. Do you ever read or see the West mocking Holocaust victims or Jews? Quote:
