Shane Warne V Muttiah Muralitharan | A debate |

This thread was started on another cricket website but I just thought I would like to hear the Ppers opinions.

Here are there stats:

Warne has 651 wickets at 25, strike rate of 57 and eco of 2.61.

Muttiah has 584 wickets at 22.50, strike rate of 56.80 and eco of 2.37.

Muttiah's average vs India, one of the better players of spin is 32, while Warne's is 47.

Also lots of people might argue that Warne has heaps of wickets which are just tailenders, while Muttiah has toporder scalps. But.. Muttiah doesn't have McGrath on his side.

The stats would show that Murali was better but just to save time, I'll post what I wrote on the other website. On this thread say who's better and give reasons.

It would have to be Shane Warne for me. Why, you would ask? Why? As Bcl has shown Murali has the better average, the better strike rate, and he has the better average, 32 against argubly the best team in the world when it comes to playing spin.

Well, my reasons for selecting Warne over Muttiah are pretty damn simple. Muttiah Muralitharan will never clear his action enough for me. The Icc has ruled that it is ok but just with the naked eye it really does look like he's chucking. That dark cloud will be above Muralis head all the time.

Another reason is that Warne is a master of mind games. He gets banned for a year for taking some drug and as soon as he gets back, plays one side game for Victoria, he announces himself the best legspinner in the world. Not MacGill, or Kaneria, or Kumble. Warne. That alone would do it for me. Such confidence will always do it for me.

Shane Warne took 40 wickets in the ashes, through 3 weapons. His legspinner, flipper, and his reputation.

In my opinion the greatest spinner ever, Shane Warne.

This debate has been done quite a bit, but as a Pakistani Im more worried when Warne is bowling to our batsmen than when Murali is

Honestly, I cannot decide. Both are great spinners. Maybe if they both bowled the same kind of spin bowling I would have chosen one. Both are very competitive and determined players.

I choose Warne is because he has so much variety to his bowling. He has the drifting leg spin, he has the loopy leg spin, great flipper, sort of a fast googly, starighter/faster one. I enjoy watching him bowl. He has taken wickets everywhere in the world. If you have a wicket which is not coducive for spinners, Warne would still do the same damage. His bowling IMO is not picth dependant. Also, offspin is easy to bowl compared to legspin. Legspinners are rare

Can someone care to release the medial documents proving Muttiah is a chucker? I don't care what your eye sees, when someone moves their hand really fast it looks like they have more than one hand...do we believe that too? If you think Murali is a chucker...so is Shoaib Akthar.

Warne vs Murali? Murali for me any day. Not any bias, I think he is fairly under-rated and the best bowler in the game today.

Arugment 1 - Murali has no one else but Warne has to contend with McGrath and Gillespie.
First of all, Murali has to contend with Vaas, however carries the workload alot on himself. Alot of pressure on him to lead Sri Lanka to victory, meanwhile, Warne lucky has someone to fall back on. Sure McGrath takes some wickets, but don't you ever realize bowling is like batting. They work in partnerships. Don't you think Warne benefits from all the pressure created by McGrath? To me, bowling with no support is far more hard than contending with your team mate for wickets. Warne feeds off others pressure more so than Murali does.

Argument 2-Murali plays on spinning wickets.
Even if he does, just compare Warne and Murali's record on a spinning tracks and you will see Murali outdoes Warne.

Argument 3-India
India are notoriously spin champions of the world. They have trashed bowlers all over history like greats such as Qadir too Warne. To have a average of 32 vs India is impressive considering Warne's is 47 and Qadirs is inflated as the Bolivian economy.

Argument 4 - Ashes
Yes Warne took 40 wickets. Impressive, however it was against England after all, and I mean they are pretty poor players of spin. On their last trip of Sri Lanka they looked clueless. Some will say "but England won in 2001" However one must account that team had Graham Thrope who is Englands best player of spin, meanwhile this Ashes team did not. And mind you, Murali took 15 wickets in a match against England in 98, and it was in England mind you. Everyone knows Englands poor record against leg spin.

In conclusion, I pick Murali any day over Warne.
