POTW (Majid Khan) QOTW (Geoff Boycott)

This weeks post of the week goes to seasoned PPer Majid Khan with his excellent post on whether Bob Woolmer would have survived in the Pak era of player politics ;-

"Well I think Woolmer might not have been a bad choice for coach of the Pakistan team of that era, because he has a very balanced sort of personality - ie, he's not too strong / dominant like a Javed Miandad or like Greg Chappel as we're seeing in India, and neither is Woolmer a 'puppet' or a 'yes man' like an Intikhab/Mushtaq Mohammed/Pybus kind of coach.

Woolmer to me has the right balance in his personality and comes across as someone who wants others to understand his ideas/philosophies on cricket - but he is also open minded and willing to adjust and learn about how cricket is played in a country like Pakistan.

So as far as earning the respect and support of the players, I think Woolmer had the credentials to have done that even with the Pakistan team of the 90s - I find it unlikely that Woolmer would have any major controversies or rivalries with players... because he comes across as a shrewd and broad minded person and not one with an ego problem.

But the real question is would Woolmer have been able to unite the Pakistan team of that era , in the same way as he has been able to unite the Pak team of the current era? now that would be a difficult proposition - because the in-fighting, rivalries and player politics culture was so much a part of the Pakistan team in that era, that even Woolmer might have packed his bags and gone home realising the only solution was to kick most of the team out and start afresh - something that was just not possible.. not until they called it a day themselves after World Cup 2003 or were forced to do so by a certain Aamir Sohail as chief selector (who ironically might have had no other agenda in mind but to settle old scores against his former team-mates, whom he perhaps felt played a hand in keeping him out of the team.)"

Quote of the Week is a classic which Farhad dug out from Geoff Boycott "So who would you be bowling now at this time if you are captain of the fielding side?" Boycott replied: "Waqar Younis, both ends, all the time!!" And Surrey were not even playing"!
