does afridi merit a place in the ODI team?

I know that this seems like I am jumping the gun after a couple of poor performanaces from Afridi, but I have always thought of him(in ODI cricket) as a bowler who can bat. His bowling is suffering, and with Arshad as the super-sub, he will likely not be called upon to bowl very much in the next few games. Same goes for Razzaq, however his bowling has improved somewhat, and he is bowling more and more in ODI cricket.
Again, I feel Afridi does merit a place in the test team, as his approach to batting in test cricket is more mature, and hence more successful( and no less entertaining, I might add).
Also I am not in favor of Akmal opening the batting, but that deserves its own thread.

Afridi needs to bat in ODI's like he does in test matches.

He's suffering from a dose of the Sehwag's

After success in test matches batting at a high strike rate, Afridi feels the need to bat at twice that strike rate in ODi's and thats his downfall

However he is due a couple of knocks!!

I wouldn't mind his batting failures so much if he would chip in with the ball a little bit. He used to bowl 5-7 overs regularly around 2002-2004, but with the new supersub rules in place I feel his bowling will not be needed very much any more.

What a b u l l s h i t thread.
Sir, Afridi is one of the BETTER odi players in the WORLD. He'd either walk in or be on the fringes of ANY odi squad. He is a better bowler than symonds and, if we bothered to be as **** about discipline as australia, he'd be a more mature batsman as well. But Pakistan wants an individual to do what he does best so he prefers to attack from the egt go.
His fielding is crucial at times and the intensity he can bring to the opposition cannot be measured by stats.
U really need to take it easy on players after a few bad performances.

Those doubting Afridi, cast your mind back to the last series between Pakistan and India in India. The first three games, there was nothing noteworthy, then in the next three games his innings scores read

40 from 23-5 fours 2 sixes
102 from 46- 10 fours 9 sixes
44 from 23- 6 fours 1 six

So i wouldnt be pushing the panic button just yet

haha.. brilliant thread...

Afridi had a bit of brain explosion today but he would still be a sure fixture in practically any ODI team around the world. that said the coach and captain need to make sure he studies his dismissal and see if the risks he was taking were necessary at that stage of the match.

So far Ive seen get rid of Afridi, Butt, Malik, Rana, Asif, Gul maybe I've even missed some out, but thats nearly half the team, one loss and people start acting like this it shows the fickleness of the support, add to that people criticising Inzamam and whether he should be captain!

ah man give the players a break please... we loose one match and everyone dont know
what to do or who to blame... i guess it could be down to we aint lost for such a long time
so we makin some silly threads just to blame someone..

afridi has been one of our best odi players in last 2 years or so...

only thing i dont like is when playing in pakistan the people at the ground expect too
much from him.. i mean i heard people boo him at the last ODI just because he blocked
a ball or even got a single... and to top it of when he gets out people leave the stadium..
that for sure has to put some pressure on him.. may be hard for the fanz in pak
but serious some of them need to back off a bit.. he cant score 50 of 30 ballz every match
or even hit a 6 every ball...

Such an inane and idiotic thread. One bad inning and y'all are asking for the guys head. Give him a break. Inshallah he would come good.

I think the next time he goes to bat, Woolmer and Inzi should tell him that its imperative that he bats 50 balls...that would be enough to cause carnage.....I am sure he'll get 60 runs in them atleast. In fact I sometimes feel Afridi can keep the same scoring rate even without his lofted shots!

Afridi is the ultimate one day player. I have a couple of Indian friends who would trade in Afridi for one of their top order batsmen gladly! Stay patient and let the series finish. He has been doing really well and as Mercenary said, he is due now.
