The Worlds Tallest building begins to take shape in Dubai...

Where else would you find a Ski Slope in the middle of an arid desert ? A 7 star hotel frequented by the the glitterati of the planet ? Mall upon mall of stupendous proportion ? A dream come true for the "highest this and tallest that" merchants ? Where else would you find thousands of lowly paid Asian laborers building huge monuments to todays Pharoahs ?

D U B A I...

And now as if all this hype wasnt enough, Dubai and the world watches in awe as from sands of the UAE rises another mammoth structure - Burj Dubai ( literally translated - Tower of Dubai ). Once completed this will be THE LANDMARK of that region ... just thought I would post some stuff on this development.

Incidentally, EMAAR, the people building this structure are also the people who will be investing heavily in Pakistan so expect to see something this glamorous rising in your backyard as well !

Almost half a mile high! If i'm not mistaken currently the Petronas towers is the tallest building in the world. Will this top that?

Also, read somewhere that they are keeping the exact height of this tower secret ie they may add a few more inches if some other developer starts planning a higher building than this ! Crazy !

I am alarmed by this fascination by a load of countries that are trying to build the tallest building in the world.

When I was in Malaysia, my brother in law was telling me that local workers were too scared to put the spikes on the Petronas Towers. So they got Pakistani workers to do the job.

Burj Dubai will look awesome when finished.

To me this will be like the Pyramids - thousands of lowly paid workers will work day and night to give Dubai its premier attraction - like it or not, similarities to ancient Egypt and Pyramids arent that great a leap of imagination...

When I was in Eygpt, our guide said that the perception that construction was slave driven isnt totally accurate. A large number of workers were free men and the only reason they worked in the summer heat was that they couldnt in winter as they had their farms to work on

the tower would look really odd imo, it will make the skyline look small cos of the huge gap between the heights of the burj and the other buildings in the skyline.

Wasn't Kharachi port suppose to build one of these huge buildings?

I agree Hash Bhai but a few things have changed

Firstly, Asian workers are increasingly expressing their displeasure at some of the living conditions - there was recently mass rioting in Dubai Marina. Also, there are now moving to night shifts for workers - unheard of in the old days.

All you can say is that modern day UAE owes a lot to these guys - the unsung heroes of Dubais Economic Boom.

yep i was there when the mess happened at the marina, they torn apart all the vehicles and construction machinary there and beat up the security, also damaged the buildings.

funny thing is how some people *cought*nauman*cought* would start to say pakistan is doomed if it happened there, it happens all over the world

Sorry to generalize, but why are the Arabs not interested in the intellectual development of their society, instead of building roads and all that show and glamour?

More books get translated in one country Spain than the entire Arab world per year - says something about these guys does it not...

jeez first it was the afgahnis, then the poms now it is the arabs.intellectual development?3 years and egyptian won the nobel prize for chemistry.

But thats not the point.if the arabs want to built buildings then let them be.Most asians work in the middle east. They don't travel to the west. The arabs may not be perfect but who else would the asian labourers work for?

what rubbish.

You are saying that people should not criticise their host country? Or the 'hand that feeds them' as you put it?

I have never heard any more rot in my life. It is the sort of crap the BNP comes out with.

Andi f you think the Arabs feed these Asian labourers then think again. If anything it is the other way round. The Arabs should be on their knees thanking these poor construction workers who slave away throughout the day in unbelievable heat living with about 50 people per room and travelling around in packed prison vans with no rights whatsoever (and don't even get me started on their pay).

Whats happened to your punctuation recently ET ? I am starting to copy and paste your posts to Word for grammar checks now

Yeah you are right but why cant we point to something that is wrong ?

Look around ET, there are enough threads on PP that criticize Pakistan and Pakistanis ( infact there is a lot of resentment about these types of threads) but they are necessary - that way, we cant even criticize the US or UK govts ever (as they also feed us) ?
