Wedding Reception Speech - Help Needed....

Well the wedding season is upon us and my older brother is going to get married in just under 3 weeks from now in Calgary (1st week of August).....The reception then is the following week in Toronto and my brother and his wife have selected me to speak for 15 minutes at the reception ....So now I have the arduous task of speaking for 15-20 minutes while not offending anyone or making too much fun of my mom who is the official censorship board and will read over the speech and chuck it out if it isn't suitable .....

The problem here is I've never made a speech of this kind, and no confidence isn't a problem, it's just I don't know where to begin....So I ask the expert people on this board who've made this sort of speech for ideas to write and fit it into 15-20 minutes....

Good question, well it has to be about my brother obviously and perhaps how he really felt about his wife, and not a tirade on Bush

I did one at my sisters wedding - she is an IT consultant and married another IT person - so I threw in some jokes about what happens when 2 minds get together!!

It may seem a little dry for some of the young guys but given the respect we have in our families, we need not copy Western ideas of best man speeches!

Anyway, here is the full speech - see if you like it!

Quote:

Dear [Bride, Bridegroom, parents] and dear friends:

A very warm welcome to you all. Hope you are all enjoying yourselves tonight.

When a few months ago Bride announced that she is ready to tie the knot, a collective gasp of relief went around the family and friends, mingled with a slight wisp of apprehension , lest pre-nuptial blues should intervene.

Well, here we are and I am glad to report that all those fears have now been consigned to history.

But, in truth, we need not have worried as within days of this announcement, and Bridegroom presented the world with the ultimate proof of any relationship, the Joint Wedding Web Site!!

This, as those of us in the IT industry understand, was no mean feat. There had to be some fantastic chemistry at work for 2 fully grown IT individuals to agree and execute a project in such a short time.

From now on , this, was a match made in heaven and no questions were asked. We all know that Bride and Bridegroom have to grapple with diverse languages i.e. URDU and GERMAN, but fate had chosen a common language for them – JAVA ,with a spattering of English!!

Later on , as I was still recovering from the excitement of the upcoming nuptials, Bride dropped another bombshell. This time , it was an executive order to deliver a speech on her wedding.

Now you must all understand that as Pakistani weddings go, all the bride’s brother usually utters is something on the lines of “Oi Biriyani Kab Ai Gee Yaar“ or for non URDU speakers, put very politely “When will the Bryani be served?” Unfortunately, this was not to be. So here I am , ready with a few good words about my dearest sister Bride ( or atleast, that’s what she hopes !! ).

Those of you who know Bride, are well aware of her charm , her pleasant outgoing personality, her charitable nature, her sincere friendship and most importantly, her love for anything with a keyboard and a hard drive ( watch out Bridegroom!!! ).

However, most notable among her traits, is her gift of dealing with children. As her kid brother, I witnessed first hand this quality in action. My fond memories of Karachi where Bride and I grew up, take me back to those hilarious, fun filled moments when she would lock us up in the bathroom for no apparent reason. Or to the hugely funny, though blood curdling “shoosh” if we dared breathe as she watched her role model Emma Peel beat yet another man into pulp.

Alas like all good things, those days are gone. We have all grown up and “have a life” However, as luck would have it, her nieces and nephews and of course, Bridegroom , have a fairly good chance to experience this once again.

I say Good Luck to ALL of them!!!

Finally, all that remains is for me thank you again for your participation in this evening’ festivities and to wish Bride and Bridegroom a long and happy life together. In the words of some anonymous URDU poet , we all say to Bride and Bridegroom “Jahan Raho Khush Raho, Abaad Raho”, which for StarTrek buffs, loosely translates into “live long and Prosper “ !!

Thank you.

Thank you very much mig, really appreciate that you posted the speech here.....Excellent speech btw, and since my older brother is a IT person will go well with the jokes and his wife a nurse so I'll have to come up with jokes for that.....I hope you don't mind if I do take some ideas off it.....And your'e right about not going on Western influences, I've read many of those kinds of speeches on various websites, and they could be offensive to families, and hence I had posted to seek help here......

a good speech that a friend delivered threw in a cricket analogy. it was at another friend's wedding and slowly all the 'boys' were getting married, 'losing their wickets' so to speak, so he went on about how the boys kept losing early wickets, getting clean bowled etc and only a handful were left to steady the ship.
being the eldest brother, maybe you can throw in something about how losing the openers early is a traditional Pakistani problem but remind your parents that your intention is to stay at the wicket for a long time and make a double century ... unless ofcourse they can get the phone number of that lovely girl in the white sari you saw earlier...

Cav dear boy, your'e only 13, so therefore you don't have much experience in hearing speeches nor attending many weddings....From my experience going to weddings that my parents had dragged me to had speeches and is more of tradition nowdays, espacially weddings in the West.....

15-20 minutes is too long. Where does this figure some from anyway?
All good speeches are much shorter; in fact 5 minutes is the upper limit if you dont want the listeners to suffer.

keep making fun of your brother for 10 minutes, include all the childhood memories you can, embarass him totally...and then for the next 5 minutes, praise him and your bhabhi to the skies, end on a good note. Make sure the jokes keep coming though

yeah start off with the same old stupid "just flew in from Toronto yesterday ... my arms are still tired" kinda stupid joke that the uncles and aunties over 40 laugh at for 5 minutes. remember, delivery and timing is key.

i thought weddings couldn't get anymoe boring but wedding speeches certainly take it to another level.

you have sit there and listen to someone blabbering about what a great guy his bro / sis is ? and what a charming spuse they have selected for themselves ??
