Pakistan's Role in the Fall of the Soviet Union

I remember, in 80s when the Russians were in Afghanistan and the whole nation was burning with the desire to take part in jihad there. People from my street also went there. A boy from the house opposite was made prisoner of war and spent many years in the infamous Pull Charkhi jail in Kabul. Afghan Jihad was in everybody's heart and the Soviets regularly infringed our air space and dropped bombs in Waziristan area. Pak Airforce started getting involved in dog fights and the superiority of the F16 over the Migs was established now and again. All these things seem to be half-forgotten, half-obliterated history. Soviet Scud missiles fell as far inside our country as half a mile from my house in Wah Cantt, (the explosion was enormous). We don't talk about these things any more.

Yesterday Musharraf gave the Oxford students a lesson in history in his speech to the Debating Society. Excerpts were broadcast in BBC Radio 4's PM programme. But it never made it in any other news bulletin, nor is it on the BBC website. This is dangerous history. This shows the great betrayal that changed the Mujahidin into al Qaida and Taliban. Why was Musharraf's address not put on the BBC web page like his other interview? We must remember the horrors that our country and our people suffered to help the West win the Cold War in Afghanistan. Musharraf was right to claim the honour of the demolition of the Berlin Wall for his country. West should be reminded of these facts. According to the programme presenter, the students were stunned when they heard these 'revelations'. When asked by the BBC about this history, most of them admitted that they knew nothing about it. An Alaskan student praised Musharraf for being a better speaker than her President. All thrilling stuff. I have always wondered why the Afghan jihad is not mentioned any more.

Great job being done by General Musharraf, he is a true Pakistani Nationalist! I love the way he has let the world know we are a force to be reckoned with

Musharaf loves nothing more than himself. He has always had political ambitions and feels that he can some day be called Ata-Pak a similar title to his anti-islam hero.
