Mirpur: an international venue?

More international games for Mirpur

MIRPUR, Azad Kashmir: The people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) will witness another one-day cricket match to be played at the Quaid-e-Azam International Sports Stadium here in February next year.

This was disclosed by Chairman Mirpur Development Authority (MDA) Sardar Mohammad Rahim Khan while addressing a news conference here on Friday.

Rahim said the management has decided to open the world-class stadium for the regular One-day Internationals (ODIs) as well as Tests to provide quality cricket to the fans.

Deputy Commissioner and Patron-in-Chief District Cricket Association Fayyaz Ali Abbasi, Acting President AJK Cricket Association Nawaz Rattayal, DCA President Ashraf Butt, Director Estate Management MDA Raja Fazal-ur-Rehman, Secretary Rashed Hanif, SDM Mohammad Tayyab and other officials of the DCA and the cricket management committee were also present at this occasion.

Rahim added that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been moved with the recommendation to accord the Test centre status to Mirpur due to the existence of the world-class Quaid-e-Azam Stadium.

He said this will promote the sport activities especially cricket besides the international tourism in this picturesque town located in the periphery of the scenic Mangla lake.

The MDA chief revealed that a coaching camp under talent-hunt programme is being held by National Cricket Academy (NCA) at the Quaid-e-Azam Stadium from November 20 and it will continue till November 30 for picking the required talent.

He said that prior to this, the trials to look for the talent would commence from November 18. Local lads of the 12-22 age group would be eligible to participate in the trials which will be supervised by former Test cricketer Mudassar Nazar.

Dont think we will see any matches there as you need to have a 4 star hotel there. There isnt any 4 star hotel in the vicinity.

It's great news for the Mirpuris. The stadium looks similar to Faisalabad unfortunately but i like those 4 green stands at each corner. Hopefully the pitch will be pretty decent and there will a big crowd for the match. ZM will elated.

I m really surprised, Aus hockey team not willing to play in Lahore or cricket team have concerns playing in Karachi, but their junior team are playing in Kashmir.
