Shoaib and Asif victims of personal grudge: Hanif Mohammad

Shoaib and Asif victims of personal grudge: Hanif
19th Nov 2006 23.07 IST

Former Pakistan captain Hanif Muhammad feels banned pace bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif were the victims of the personal grudge by the Cricket Board appointed appeals committee, which was not neutral.

"The way the national cricketers have been punished was a source of embarrassment for all. If both players were at fault, they should be punished but the punishment should not be so severe that it could bring their career to end," Hanif said.

"I can say with full confidence that most of the batsmen in the world are fearful of Shoaib Akhtar. He is the fastest bowler in the world.

"In the absence of these bowlers, it would be hard for the Pakistan cricket team to reach the second round in the next year's World Cup," he was quoted as saying by the 'Daily Times' in Karachi.

He also said Pakistani's victory against the West Indies in the Lahore Test should not blind them as Brian Lara was in excellent form and could pose serious threat to the Pakistani team.

Shoaib was banned for two year and Asif for one after the duo tested positive for banned steroid nandrolone in the PCB's internal dope test before the Champions Trophy.

There certainly appeared to be utter disdain in Intikhab Alam's words after the first hearing was over for Shoaib.

It sure is, but I have this feeling, this thing could be bigger than Oval controversy. Now that Gay has been involved again by the PCB and this time, This Gay is going to stick into Intikhab and the PCB and their biased dicision. Hanif Nana said something about the personal grudge! I think, Shoaib had rejected the proposal coming from Intikhab Alam regarding his daughter? who knows? otherwise, i cannot imagine why on earth Intikhab Alam could had been so disrespectful to Shoaib Akhtar? Active sex and Alcohol! now somebody should ask Intikhab Alam his own whereabouts and history!

Could be true, remember Pakistan had Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Shoaib Akhtar and they where tormented through out the World Cup 2003 and failed to make it to the supersixes, no doubt our team isn't as great as it was in the World Cup 2003, considering the caliber of the players then and now.

Don't know about Asif, but Alam's comments did highlight a grudge against Akhtar and the way he conducts himself off the field.

Yes, but the format of this world cup is very different. We have to beat Zimbabwe and Ireland to get to the 2nd round.

No offence or disrespect to the great man but, erm, somehow, umm, I think that is a bit of an exageration.
