Plot to behead a British Muslim soldier...

in Birmingham !! Whats going on ?

Quote:
Nine held in UK 'anti-terror' raids

Nine people have been arrested in the UK in connection with an alleged plot to kidnap and possibly kill a Muslim British soldier.

Anti-terrorism police said eight people were arrested in dawn raids across the city of Birmingham and a ninth suspect was arrested later on a nearby motorway.

Some news reports claimed the men planned to behead the soldier and broadcast the act on the Internet.

Counterterrorism officials - speaking on condition of anonymity - said the kidnapping plot was the first of its kind to be uncovered in Britain.

Kidnap 'plot'

Al Jazeera's correspondent in London, Alan Fisher, said parallels have been drawn with kidnapping plots in Baghdad, but added "there's no suggestion [from police] that this plot went further at the moment then a kidnap".

Police searched 12 homes in the predominantly-Pakistani neighbourhood in the central England city.

Two Islamic book stores were also cordoned off.

The men were arrested on "suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism".

'Major investigation'

David Shaw, assistant chief constable of West Midlands police, said: "This remains a dynamic, fluid operation and it is by no means finished. We are literally right at the foothills of what is a very, very major investigation for us."

Britain remains on its second-highest threat level of "severe" which indicates that security services believe a terrorist attack is highly likely.

Shane Brighton, a terrorism expert at London think-tank Chatham House, said: "It certainly seems to confirm Britain is particularly vulnerable to al Qaeda-style attacks because of the historic links to Pakistan and the Pakistani community here."

Tasnim Aslam, Pakistan's foreign ministry spokeswoman, said in Islamabad: "The British authorities have confirmed to us that there is no Pakistan connection."

Britain's Home Office said: "This operation is a reminder of the real and serious nature of the terrorist threat we face."

Beheading reports

News reports, citing unnamed sources, say the suspected conspirators planned an "Iraq-style" execution.

Sky News reported the group intended to behead the soldier and broadcast the killing on the Internet.

The alleged target had been taken into protective custody, Sky News said.

Police would not comment on the media reports.

Birmingham has been the site of several recent "anti-terrorism" operations.

Raids in the summer led to allegations that several suspects from Birmingham, London and other British cities, planned to use liquid explosives to blow up up to 10 trans-Atlantic flights.

Apparently (not certain) all of them were pakistani kashmiri of origin..which is likely as majority of pakistani immigrants in the uk are of that origin according to stats and live mostly outside London.

what was their arrest was all about then ?
I really feel for these kind of ppl who get arrest without doing anything and then been sent home without charge.
and they were have a close look on these guys for nearly 6 months before arrest ?

Just noticed this thread. It's very reassuring to know these sort of people are living a mile away from your house. No suprise i saw Kingstanding as one of the locations. It's shocking for crime (usually by white people).

Have you noticed, everytime the government, in this case John Reid, is making headlines for the wrong reason, they divert our attention elsewhere!? Just another political stunt.

The police have nothing to do with the government, and dont you think the opposition i.e. David Cameron would latch on to this if it were true?

People should stop jumping to conclusions. This whole allegation along with the other bakwas about plots to blow up airliners using a bottle of water and a mobile phone stink of serious BS designed to scare the public.

All "politically correct" pakistanis seem to want to condemn everything - without even investigating whether the allegation is true or not.

Ah you've hit the nail on the head Naved, the western media rarely puts up level headed muslim moderates who do condemn everything, and resort to put up caricatures who think they represent rest of Muslim population, sit back and watch as they make fools of themselves, and rest of the community.

Five men have been charged with terrorism offences following last week's raids in Birmingham.
Nine men were arrested last Wednesday over what senior security sources say was an alleged plot to kidnap a member of the armed forces.

A 38-year-old man has been released without charge, and one remains in custody. Two others were released without charge earlier this week.

The five charged men will appear before Coventry magistrates later.

The five men, aged 29, 30, 31, 36 and 43, have been charged with offences under the Terrorism Act 2006 and the Terrorism Act 2000.

The 31-year-old and the 36-year-old face three charges each.

The other three men face two charges each.

West Midlands Police will reveal more details about the charges at a press conference later.

'Police state'

Police have until 0400 GMT on Saturday to interview the man who remains in custody.

On Thursday, Abu Bakr, one of those arrested, spoke out after he and another man were released without charge a day earlier.

Mr Bakr, who works in the Maktabah bookshop, targeted in the raids, told BBC News the UK was "a police state for Muslims".

Prime Minister Tony Blair later rejected the accusation as "categorically wrong".
============================================
5 men been charges, but details not been issued yet. let's see what happens next.
