The Australian Football Team Thread

Talk here about anything to do with Australia football.
We have a friendly against Uruguay on June 2nd at Sydney's Telstra Stadium.

23 man squad for the Uruguay match

Daniel Allsopp (Melbourne Victory, Australia),
Michael Beauchamp (Nuremberg, Germany),
Mark Bridge (Newcastle Jets, Australia),
Nick Carle (Newcastle Jets, Australia),
David Carney (Sydney FC, Australia),
Simon Colosimo (Sivasspor, Turkey),
Jason Culina (PSV Eindhoven, Holland),
Brett Emerton (Blackburn Rovers, England),
Adam Federici (Reading, England),
Ryan Griffiths (Liaoning, China),
Brett Holman (NEC Nijmegen, Holland),
Brad Jones (Middlesbrough, England),
Patrick Kisnorbo (Leicester City, England),
Scott McDonald (Motherwell, Scotland),
Lucas Neill (West Ham, England),
Jade North (Newcastle Jets, Australia),
Matthew Spiranovic (Nuremberg, Germany),
Shane Stefanutto (Lillestrom, Norway),
Mile Sterjovski (Basel, Switzerland),
Archie Thompson (Melbourne Victory, Australia),
Michael Thwaite (Wisla Krakow, Poland),
Carl Valeri (Grosseto, Italy),
Luke Wilkshire (FC Twente, Holland)

We are missing some big names including Schwarzer, Kewell, Viduka and Tim Cahill. The squad will be cut down to 20 on the day of the match.

Manager Graham Arnold earlier said that he is looking for young players for the future. (Asian Cup and 2010 WC)

“The experience these younger players will get will hold us in good stead as we head to the Asian Cup and beyond to the 2010 World Cup qualifiers which start next year.”

Yeah, but aren't Leeds really bad now? Aren't they going to be relegated from the league after the premier-league? So why is it a mistake?

when he was at leeds he was brilliant. a few clubs were chasing him including man utd, arsenal and liverpool. he chose liverpool and the rest is history. As soon as he joined liverpool his career went downhill. i think he should have joined arsenal.

Socceroo star Mark Viduka has reportedly agreed to join English Premier League club Newcastle United on a free transfer.

Viduka is currently out of contract at Middlesbrough, and had been fielding offers from several English and Italian clubs.

But British tabloid The Sun today claimed the Australian had settled on Boro's north-east rivals Newcastle.

Middlesbrough had been eager to retain Viduka after a stellar 2006-07 season, offering the 31-year-old striker a reported £40,000 pound ($96,250) per week two-year deal.

Portsmouth, West Ham, Manchester United and Italia's Genoa were other clubs that had expressed a strong interest in Australia's World Cup skipper.

Viduka would be the first major signing for incoming Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce.

Uruguay won 2-1 in the WC qualifier rematch. Alvaro Recoba kicked the winner in the 77th minute after debutant Brad Jones failed to handle a cross from Giocamazzi.
The socceroos opened their account early on with Mile Sterjovski kicking a goal in the 6th minute.

Diego Forlan equalled in the 40th minute in front of a crowd of 63,000 at Telstra Stadium.

I mean he instead of we. If we that bad a season you would have realised the mistake, instead you thought it was a grammatical error shows you thought we were good but can't face to admit it.

Especially Kalac's blunder in the WC game against Croatia. I thought he cost us a chance at making the next round. Thank god for a man named Harry Kewell. I still to this day, do not know why Schwarzer was dropped by Hiddink. It was a terrible decision that nearly cost us dearly.

The Australia VS Argentina match has been postponed from this week to September 11th.

Quote:
FFA confirms new date for Argentina match
Sunday, 3 June 2007
Football Federation Australia today confirmed that the highly-anticipated match between the Qantas Socceroos and former world champion Argentina at the MCG had been re-scheduled for Tuesday 11 September 2007.

FFA had agreed to the Argentinean Football Association’s request to re-schedule the international match with the Qantas Socceroos which had been planned for the MCG on 6 June.

“We’d like to thank all the fans for their patience and understanding while we finalised a new date for the match,” said FFA CEO Ben Buckley.

“We have worked hard with the Argentinean Association, the Victorian Government and the MCG to set a date in stone which will enable Argentina to bring their best players to Australia. We are very grateful for the continued strong support of the government in Victoria through this whole process.”

“The new date is now confirmed and we hope that fans that have already purchased tickets will be able to attend as it promises to be a unique international major event with our Qantas Socceroos up against one of the top teams in the World. Coming straight off the back of our first ever Asian Cup campaign, I know the players are looking forward to another huge crowd in Melbourne.”

Victoria’s Tourism Minister, Tim Holding said: "It is terrific news that the World’s number one team is now confirmed to play the Qantas Socceroos on Australia’s biggest sporting stage, and the FFA have done an excellent job in ensuring that this game will go ahead.

The game will boost the sport at a grassroots level, as fans young and old will be inspired by seeing their heroes in action.

The recent announcement of the final plans for the Rectangular Stadium and our positive relationship with the FFA, along with our drive and commitment to hosting such great events, means that all Victorians can continue to look forward to top quality soccer in September and beyond."

Fans who have already purchased tickets to the match on the original date are urged to retain them as they are valid for the re-scheduled date.

Tickets are now on sale through Ticketmaster for the new date.

Refunds are also available for those who are unable to attend and that information is detailed below.

Brad Jones is a joke ... I hadn't seen him play before, but now I know why Middlesborough don't play him. I'm sure some of the local A-League keapers could have done a better job. What a regulation miss that was, but I guess we are used to keeper stuff-ups recently. There are a few that come to mind - Schwartzer against Japan in WC and against Ghana in a friendly, Kalac against Croatia, and now this one.

Fortunately it was just a friendly and didn't matter too much. We were pretty impressive in the first half, but the second half didn't really go up a gear until Recoba scored. Anyways come Asian Cup next month, the team should have Dukes, Harry, Timmy, Vince, Bresciano and Schwartzer back.
Standout performances for us on Satruday night were Lucan Niel, Emerton and Sterjovski.

They called this game off a while ago, because Argentina and Aus couldn't get their best players together. Good to see they've rescheduled it. Hopefully we can get close to a full squad.

The Aussies defeated Singapore 3-0 in their friendly before the Asian Cup starts.

Viduka scored 2 goals, while Kewell scored the other. Singapore dominated the first half and were looking towards a massive upset. But the Aussies picked up the pace and ran away witht he match.

Thats a fair few playing in the EPL. By the way, Craig Moore is playing for Queensland Roar this season.

What ever happened to Ahmed Elrich??? I always thought he was a good player, but ever since he went over to England, I don't think he's even played a single game in the Premier League.

Oh and to add to the Aussies playing in EPL list ... there's a possibility Bresciano might be going to Man City.
