A decision by the makers of Big Brother to not tell a contestant her father has died has been condemned as inhumane, unethical and psychologically damaging.

Contestant Emma's father Raymond Cornell died last week and his funeral was held on Monday in Adelaide, but the 24-year-old is still unaware of his death.

Producers of Big Brother have refused to move from their position, stating that "it was the wish of the family" that Mr Cornell's death be kept from Emma.

But ethicists say such a decision cannot be made for Emma, regardless of what her family or even her father wanted.

"Parents often want to protect children, but she's an adult and she can make up her own mind," media commentator and academic Eva Cox said. "She has to be told."

Rev Costello and Ms Cox called for the establishment of constraints on reality shows like Big Brother.

"Shows like this encourage the most prurient side of our natures," Ms Cox said "This is a serious question, and here we've crossed the line."

"It really is getting too much like the 'real' Big Brother," Rev Costello said. "The boundaries keep getting pushed back and we don't notice — like the frog in a pot of slowly heating water."

The fact that Emma has had been estranged until recently from her father, who was sick with cancer before his daughter entered the Gold Coast Big Brother house, only made her ignorance more damaging.

"The funeral is the only rite of passage we have," Rev Costello said. "I don't think we can contract to do away with things like this."

Big Brother producers refused to comment in detail on the criticisms.

That's just terrible. They really should tell her. I know her father didn't want her to know, but she should know. Big Brother here in Australia has gone to a point where it has to be cancelled. It is a really crap show and now they have pushed it too far.

I hate that show. The only one I watched was the one with George Galloway in it...even then I watched a little.

so how is it Big Brother's fault that her father didn't want her to know? if anything, they'll be acting like the 'real' Big Brother if they were to go against the wishes of the contestant's family.

As much as I love George Orwell's 1984, it really did help spawn a monster

Big Brother evictee in tears over dad
Sunday Jun 10 21:34 AEST
Big Brother housemate Emma Cornell spent the night crying after she was informed of her father's death on Saturday night ahead of her eviction tonight.

She appeared late in Sunday night's show after she was, as predicted, eliminated from the show but only briefly addressed the issue of her father's death as highlight reels of her time in the house were shown.

Cornell, 24, said she wanted to grieve with her family, who she met immediately after she left the Gold Coast house.

"I want to leave it alone tonight as was my father's wish," she told the show's host Gretel Killeen.

Cornell's father Ray died from cancer about three weeks ago and it was his dying wish that his daughter not be told of his death until she was evicted from the Gold Coast compound.

Controversy followed the announcement by Big Brother and Cornell's family that she wouldn't be told until her eviction.

She was told her father had died by her brother Matt, with the show's resident psychologist in the room, on the eve of her first chance at being evicted from the show.

Big Brother producer Kris Noble said last week that when she was eventually informed of the death, it would be a private moment and this was confirmed in a statement released by producers tonight.

The statement added: "Like all Emma's supporters, Big Brother looks forward to hearing Emma tell her own story."
