Younis avoids disciplinary action for turning down captaincy

Pakistan batsman Younis Khan has avoided disciplinary action for refusing to accept the captaincy of the national side and for opting to play for English country Yorkshire instead of his country.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Dr Nasim Ashraf told reporters on Tuesday that Younis was well within his rights to either accept or refuse their offer to become captain following the World Cup.

"I don't think he has committed any indiscipline. It was his individual decision and he can do what he thinks is best for himself," Ashraf said.

Younis turned down the captaincy after Inzamam-ul-Haq stepped down as skipper and retired from one-day internationals after the team's first round exit from the World Cup in March.

Earlier this month, he also turned down an offer by the selectors to fly directly to Abu Dhabi from England to play a three-match series against Sri Lanka, saying he was committed to Yorkshire until September.

"Younis will be considered for national selection committee like any other player when he makes himself available to play for Pakistan," Ashraf said.

"The selectors will decide who to select not the board," he added.

Ashraf also announced that the board would appoint a new coach by July 1 after having received 13 applications from foreign and local candidates.

Did they actually consider disciplinary action? Or was it just a response to a question fired at DNA?

You'd guess it would be in response to the latter and I'm pretty sure it was, but you just never quite know with the PCB!

In my opinion I think that unless he has a very good explaination, Younis Khan should be facing a disciplinary action. Not because he refused to captain the side, but because he refused to represent his country in a tournament and prioritating representing his county instead.
Imagine the reactions if a player like Steven Gerrard would refuse to play for England and play for Liverpool citing that his priorities lies with Liverpool.

I think you would find Liverpool fans wont complain since Liverpool comes ahead of England for them, and rightly so

Anyhow, it was some masala tourney, i am glad YK didnt go. It was more beneficial for him to play for Yorkshire and thats what matters

It was right for him not to play....other players got a chance...plus made shoaib maliks job much easier...on his first go at captain he wouldnt have wanted YK there anyway. PCB was happy 4 him not to b there. Its called a win-win situation

I don't think it should be that fact that he denied captaincy, but the fact that he played for a club team, rather then his own country

na I don't agree iZ - it was his choice, he was the one who missed out on the match fees etc

He let the board know and that was fine as it was only a micky mouse series.

Arey SB, are you serious? This had NOTHING to do with a "mickey mouse" serious. This is our wonderful Younis Khan. Its his choice not to play, but preferring county over country? Unacceptable to me.

Btw, can you PLEEEEEZ come on MSN. I really need to talk to you about something.

the time some disciplinary action was in order was his "dummy captain nahi bunna" stint. But instead they give it back to him couple of days later, new PCB president though in thoes couple of day

I honestly don't think PCB would take action against a player just because he does not wish to become the captain. More of a case of Pakistani media running out of controversial news

Your analogy wouldnt fit here. Since Younis with the consent of PCB made his commitment with Yorkshire, and at that time there was no plan for Dubai series. Usually when counties signed foreign players, they agree to allow players for national duties, since every cricket playing nations has chalked out their plans in advance (for sure for next year), and if a board is coming up with surprise series to make money then I don't think one should held any one accountable other than board.

So please dont compare it with Gerrad. Imagine there is an important championship game for Liverpool and England all of a sudden announce that they want to play a charity game in ireland. Do you expect Gerrad to leave Liverpool and play a charity game... You might be kidding!!!!!!!!!!!
