Win at least one major event, PCB tells Lawson

OUR STAFF REPORTER
ISLAMABAD - With only a few days remaining to join, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Dr Nasim Ashraf gave a tough task to the newly-appointed coach Geoff Lawson of winning at least one major trophy for the country within next two years.
With Champions Trophy at the corner year at home soil, it is believed that he hinted towards victory in this most prestigious tournament after the World Cup by saying "I have already told him during interview that he would have to win us a major tournament during these two years".
Besides the Champions Trophy, the Asia Cup will also take place in Pakistan involving three other major teams of cricketing world India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh while Pakistan is also scheduled to play home Test series against South Africa and Australia in 2007-08 season.
"Geoff Lawson will first form his coaching team after his arrival on August 20 and then would head towards this target," Ashraf told reporters after distributing certificates among trainees of Customs Cricket Academy (CAA) U-16 coaching camp here at Pindi Stadium on Sunday.
He said that Lawson would himself select his assistants' team and added that he did not nominate Javed Mian
dad among his helping staff.
Hoping a good show by Pakistan in the upcoming 20Twenty World Cup in South Africa, he said Pakistan team was now united and full of spirit.
"The days are gone when the discrimination among seniors and juniors was a problem for Pakistan team. Shoaib Malik has achieved the target of unifying national team with the obvious help of both senior and junior players," he said.
"We are still ranked no 3 in ODIs and fifth in Tests and being respected as one of the greatest outfits in the global arena," he said.
Asharf said that PCB planned to enhance the number of qualified coaches and talent hunt scheme for upcoming players.
He also appreciated the departments for their role in domestic cricket and said they were doing a lot for the promotion of the game in country. He said PCB was thankful to Cricket Australia, which announced to continue with the schedule of their U-19, A and national teams tours to Pakistan.
despite the security fears.
"I have written a letter to Chief of Cricket Australia O'Connor for this cooperation."
"Security issues are a global problem around the world these days but sports tours go ahead," he said. "Pakistan is perfectly safe for foreign teams to visit". He opined that Australian hockey team should also visit Pakistan for the Champions Trophy in Lahore in December.
ICA President Shakil Shaikh, while addressing the Prize Distribution Ceremony, said that teams of Islamabad-Rawalpindi had played six all Pakistan finals in the 2006-07 season. He welcomed PCB efforts to seek input from all stakeholders, including the regional associations in the process of formation of new domestic cricket structure.
Arif Habib, the sponsor of coaching camp, said cricket was Pakistan's identity and hence the corporate sector should contribute more in its promotion.
Customs head coach Jalaluddin said his department would run Under-16 cricket programmes around the country.
Chairman national junior selection committee Col. (r) Naushad, Customs Cricket Academy official Dr. Muhammad Zubair were also present on the occasion.

I really hope that test series wins count as ''major events''. If not, and mickey mouse pajama events are the sole basis for success, then we (and me personally) in for some trouble.

Thats a pretty pathetic statement. The coach doesn't win the game for the team. It's players who do. Coaches merely show the team how to win, but its the job of the team to do the winning.

Pakistan is #4 in ODIs and #6 in tests. rankings changed a month ago.

This statement shows how he fools people. Whatever Pakistan team will do in next two years, it should be counted as outcome of Woolmer grooming. If Lawson is showing any magic, it should bear fruits in next world cup.

PCB and thus spineless DNA shouldn't set goals of winning trophies rather set targets for new coach to improve performance of the team, by bringing consistency in term of team performance in coming test matches and ODI series.

I'd like to see Lawson re-iterate this point once he gets over to Pakistan. I think it'll mean a lot to have a fellow Australian saying its safe enough for a tour to Pakistan.

As for winning a 'major event', its simply the wrong way to go about it. I'm not sure if Pakistan play Australia in Australia over the next two years, but that should be what we're aiming for.
