Is the bad guy really that bad ?

Just finished watching Anthony Hopkins play the "bad guy" in Fracture - found myself almost cheering for the bad guy - seems odd but does that ever happen to you ? Do you sometimes find yourself hoping/wishing that the so called bad guy actually wins in the end ?

sure it just depends on the character and how well it is played and who is playing it. Like if I take De Niro in "Cape Fear" he was a bad guy I didn't like it (tattoos, terrorizing, rape etc) but I liked the ones he played in Heat and Good Fellas

I imagine its all the time for Merc

It does depend on the movie for me. For example in Spiderman I've been rooting for the villains but thats mainly because I really hate Parker and MJ from the movie!

Usually when the heros are slightly edgier - almost anti-hero like then there isnt always such an issue.

Sean Penn in The Dead Man Walking. He killed, he raped and he had a horrible hairdo still I wanted him to escape the death sentence.

I always end up sympathising with the bad guy.

Sylar in Heroes, Starscream in Transformers, KARR in Knight Rider, Dr Doom and Magneto in X-Men.

Even in Pakistani cricket Shoaib Akhtar gets lots of support!

Infact, a lot of times I find myself, Oh please let the bad guy get away !!!

Turns out that in our minds, the bad guy isnt necessary the Villain !Strange how the brain works or does that tell us a few things about ourselves

I always used to get angered by the fact that Jerry would always win against Tom....or the Coyote could never catch the RoadRunner.

I think when watching movies we know it is not reality but entertaintment. The character development plays a part, they have good lines, and sometimes the guy playing the bad guy is more liked as an actor (or celebrity) than the hero and maybe the element of danger or good usually wins can get a little boring. For example in untouchables the hitman probably no one cared about but Capone (De Niro) was good in his role and better than Costner. When two bad guys are in a war or in conflict (like in Scarface with Al Pacino and his boss or Abraham guy) you pick one side.

Most of the same bad guys will not be looked same way in real life

It depends how the role is played out, for e.g in WWE during the late 90's Steve Austin was just being used as a stop gap villain in a feud with returning Bret Hart, fro what I have heard this was just suppose to be a filler program for Hart to get him ready for the big program with Shawn Michals but apparently Austin playd his bad guy personna so well that crowd started going crazy for his anti-hero antics and eventually WWE had to reverse their roles. Austin's bad guy attitude was the main reason for WWE revival in the late 90's

The Sith are also way cooler than the Jedi (except Yoda).

Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Darth Sidious and the list goes on!

Whether he's in the Vader suit or not, Anakin is a Sith!

I liked Anaikin from his childhood, as for Darth Vader I thought his charecter was a bit overrated.

Talking about charecters I think more then the bad or good guys its the charecters that are given the tinge of grey that turn out to be most interesting, like in Harry Potter it was Snape who turned out to be the best charecter.

One movie where I was solidly behind the good guys was the LOTR trilogy but there wasnt much focus on Sauroman and even less on Sauron.

Any bad guy played by Mustapha Qureshi was better than the hero.
