Ponting and Jayawardene lead ICC Awards nominations
Ricky Ponting, the Australia captain and Mahela Jayawardene, his Sri Lanka counterpart have both been nominated in four categories for the 2007 ICC Awards.
Eight other players - Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Matthew Hayden, Michael Hussey, Glenn McGrath, Muttiah Muralitharan, Kevin Pietersen, Shaun Pollock and Mohammad Yousuf - have been nominated for three individual awards. The Emerging Player nominees include Shaun Tait, Mitchell Johnson, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Ross Taylor, Chris Tremlett and Ravi Bopara. Malcolm Speed, the ICC chief executive, said he was looking forward to the awards ceremony. "There is so much great cricket to reflect upon during the voting period," he said, adding, "There were runs galore from the likes of Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden, Kevin Pietersen, Kumar Sangakkara and Mohammad Yousuf, and outstanding bowling displays by established champions such as Glenn McGrath, Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne and newcomers like Shaun Tait and Monty Panesar". Ponting and Jayawardene are also the sole nominees for the Captain of the Year after the ICC released a long list of nominees for various awards. The nominations were made by a five-man ICC selection committee led by Sunil Gavaskar and including Chris Cairns, Gary Kirsten, Iqbal Qasim and Alec Stewart. The panel also chose the Test and ODI Teams of the Year The nominees for the individual awards will be voted-upon by a 56-person voting academy comprising the captains of the 10 Full Member nations, the 10 umpires in the elite panel, eight match referees in the elite panel, and 28 former players and select members of the media. The voting academy will also decide on the Spirit of Cricket Award, given to the ODI team that has played according to the spirit of the game. The ICC has introduced the Associate ODI Player of the Year award for this year's ceremony. Each of the six Associate Members of the ICC - Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, Kenya, the Netherlands and Scotland - were invited to nominate players for the award. For the Women's Cricketer of the Year, each Full Member is eligible to nominate two players. The resulting nominees are then voted upon by 17 former cricketers and key figures in the women's game, including members of the media. The nominations for the Umpire of the Year were made by the ICC. The ICC will announce a shortlist for the awards on September 4, while the final winners will be announced at the fourth annual ICC Awards set to take place in Johannesburg on September 10, a day before the opening match of the Twenty20 World Championship.
