Madad: yeh kaunsa sher hai?
I know there is a sher by Ghalib (I think) which goes something like:
Nazuki (delicateness) uss lubb/zulf ki kya kahiyay Kali aik gulab ki see hai (not sure whether its lubb or zulf) does anyone know of the correct sher, and who said it? thanks!

Gairat-e-yusuf hai ye vaqt-e-aziiz
'Meer' is ko raayegaa.N khotaa hai kyaa The reference to Yusuf (AS) in this one reminds me of Ghalib's reference to Easa (AS): Ibn-e-Mariam hua karay koi Meray dard ki dawa karay koi waisay this Mir chap is pretty good, i must say

bhaiyo, aik aur sher dhuund wa do...this one is from Iqbal for sure. I remember seeing this in grade 5 or 6 on a poster in school, and it stuck on me...but have forgotton the words.
it goes something like this (grossly paraphrasing!): kafir ki nishaani yeh hai kay hai aasmaN main gum momin ki nishaani yeh hai kay aasmaN iss main gum hai

mir's mastery was to write ghazals with shorter verses. in urdu they call it "chooti beher" and i think it's not easy to do so. it's like painting with few strokes(it shows the artistic capability of a person to express like that). in contemporary urdu ghazal, nasir kazmi's shairi is a good example of it.

mir is considered more as a hindustani or subcontenental poet. ghalib was very much influenced by some persian poets. according to different critics he was influenced by "urfi" and they critics consider urfi as better than ghalib(certainly not my opinion as i never read urfi)

nasir was one hell of a mir protege, dare i say waisay B.
waisay i am not sure if i completely agree with mir's rep for choti beher. though it has to be said he did it far more than his contemporaries. |

i think choti beher was his speciality. just look at this:
dekh to dil ke jaan se uttha he yeh dhuan sa kahan se uthta he it's so beautiful especially the second line. |

yar for choti beher, nasir was it, i think that was more so his domain than even mir who probably one of the earlier exponents.

mir was definitly on oar with ghalib.
but i wudn't rate him higher either.
