Water and Earth are the two most crucial components in the making of the Universe.

I have driven to Uthal by road on the old highway and this new highway is an amazing upgrade to what was there before. Brilliant pics suhaib and the coastline looks amazing. A shame about what will happen to the road and coast when people start using them. Keep these as 'before' pics for future reference!

it will stay like that, because the areas empty right now, when resorts are made on the beachs of the makran, traffic will start to grow and when gwadars fully made, the road will be flooded, i think it should have been more then 2 lanes, cos it will be jam packed in 5 years time when everyone will want to go to gwadar.

no i dont think any resturants would want to open up on a highway, but you can always go down to karachi to go to nandoo's

Highway of Hope (Makran Coastal Highway)

(By Faiqa Abdul Hayee)

When we hear the word “princess”, the first person who comes to mind is Princess Diana. It would be hard to dispute that she still lives in the hearts of so many people across the world. But thanks to the Markan Coastal Highway, people travelling on this road can now get a chance to see a glimpse of the gorgeous Sassi, also known as the Princess of Hope, no less in stature than Princess Diana. The whole journey is so scenic that it feels as if one is travelling through pre-historic times. I wonder if any producer from Hollywood had ever travelled through this route, because many historic movies could have been made here.

The construction of the Makran Coastal Highway will not only generate enormous economic activities in the region, but will also pave the way for creating employment opportunities for the poor living along the 800km-long coastal belt.

Then there is the fort of Sassi Punno whose construction dates back to 6000 to 8000BC. It is widely believed that the Princess of Hope waited here for her prince Punno hoping that he would come, but with the passage of time she transformed into a figure made out of stone. One interesting feature of the figure is that her visage is facing Kech (Turbat), the region Punno belonged to.

Folktales of Pakistan are full of stories about unrequited love, having colourful characters. Myths and legends have a unique place in our culturally rich history. The stories associated with these legends contribute to cultural evolution. Sassi-Punnu is a very famous folk love story and one of the favourites of film producers in the subcontinent. It was first written by Nawab Mir Mohammad Maasoom with the title Masnawi Husn-o-Naz during Emperor Akbar’s tenure (1556-1605). Qazi Soorthi re-wrote the story in Mohammad Shah Rangeela’s rule (1719-48). Shah Abdul Latif Bhattai as well included this story in his spiritual classic Sindhi literature.

Sassi was the only daughter of King Adam Khan of Bhambour, Sindh. At her birth astrologers predicted that she would prove to be a curse to the royal family’s prestige. The king ordered that the child be put in a wooden chest with a taweez tied to her neck and a lot of jewellry and gold coins as her living expenditures, and thrown into the Indus River. And so was done.

The chest was seen floating on the water by Atta, a washerman. He considered the child a gift from God and took her home and adopted her as his child. Many years passed by and the king did not have another child, so he decided to get married again. When he heard that the daughter of Atta, Sassi, was as beautiful as the angels, the king summoned her to his palace.

Sassi was still wearing the taweez (amulet), which made the king recognize his daughter immediately. He asked Sassi to live with him, but she refused. She wanted to acquire knowledge.

During this time she heard about a trader from Makran who had a garden with a huge monument, the inner portion of which was adorned with exquisite paintings. When Sassi visited the place to admire the art, she instantly fell in love with a painting, which was a masterpiece. She soon discovered that it was the portrait of Prince Punnu, son of King Jam Arao, the ruler of Turbat, Makran. Sassi became desperate to meet Punnu. She ordered that any businessman coming from Turbat should be presented before her. There was a flutter within the business community as the news spread and someone informed Punnu about Sassi’s love for him. He assumed the garb of a businessman and carrying a bagful of different perfumes came to meet Sassi. The moment Sassi saw him she recognized him. Punno also fell in love with her. They decided to get married.

At the wedding, Pannu’s brothers forced him to drink different types of liquor. When he became drunk, they carried him on a camel’s back and returned to their hometown Turbat. Sassi couldn’t bear the grief of separation and ran barefoot towards the city of Turbat. To reach the city she had to cross miles of desert land, the journey that was full of different kinds of dangers.

Sassi’s end was similar to that of the bird called Kaknoos. It is said that when this bird sings, fire leaps out from its wings and it is reduced to ashes in its own flames.

Balochistan, so far unexplored, offers a lot to tourists, historians and visitors. Those who have not visited the coastal highway are missing out on a great visual treat.

There are three famous mud volcanoes a few miles east of the highway near Hinglaj, which are said to be the biggest mud volcanoes in the world, and are considered sacred by Hindus, who call them ‘Chandra Gupt’ and make regular pilgrimages to the site to offer prayers. These volcanoes erupt periodically.

The new deep-sea port and the coastal highway mark a turning point in the country’s history. These projects would change the economic situation of Balochistan and the country, and will also further enrich its cultural heritage.

china only in 2000 had a similar no.living under the poverty line....

now its down to half that.

To improve chances of living for the poor ppl in Pakistan is to increase the basic amenities for them if it can.Building roads, access to clean water etc.

Most importantly, with providing education, building more government schools etc.

Majority of the poor have their own backward beliefs which needs to be eradicated. Once that happens , ppl can move forward. Some ppl are so suited to their customs that they dont believe in change.
They need to be dragged into the present day. But, it is difficult and requires negotiation.

It will be generation before u see the benefits for the poor. But, they need to ask for it and upcertains backward customs to progress.

its a two way street to see progress.

China is a communist country.

Cant see how some people are poor and others arent.

And no, China wasnt the same in 2000 but 20 years ago, their economy has been growing around 12% for the last 15 years.

i was referring to the no. of ppl living under the poverty line.

China has vast natural resources...majority of known Pak resources is in Bolochistan. They have gone an industrial evolution the last 25 yrs. India at the moment are doing the same because of their resources.

I know.

350 million people in china were living belo the poverty line 20 years ago.

It has reduced because China's economy has been growing 10-12% for the last 2 decades.

No nation can match that growth especially considering the size of their economy.

WoW, by building a 300km road gives us a growth rate of 8.6% and FDI of $3billion dollars, WOW, we must build some more of these and give this secret to the afrcans and indians.

there isnt even one tower up yet and your dreaming of 50 storeys,

dubai it gots first 50 storey tower only in 1997/98, and that was by the goverment.

to actully get a 50 storey tower you need to start with the 20s first.

Pak will only overtake India if Pak maintain this progress for several yrs and that's also over India. just after one yr result, we can't say we have overtaken India

All Suhaib is trying to say is that it isnt all doom and gloom in Pakistan.

Our economy will grow at least 7.5% this year.

its growing because of foreign investment..but if that goes.....we'll be back to square one. Investments -partly from multinationals and partly from ex-pats.

Indias is due to exports now...rather than investment. If it continues say for another 5 years in a row than we will see progress.

Foriegn investment?

How else do economies grow?

China still receives the most foreign investment.

And India only exports 70 billion dollars worth per year.

Thats peanuts considering the size of their economy and population.

China exports close to 700 billion each year.

I think its how much returns the investor gets for their investment.

100% means good investment.

Well not yet.

Itll take 5 years of sustained growth before it can be mentioned as a BIG market.

Manipulate figures all you want Muddy and Suhaib it doesnt hide the real story behind it, lets take an example say India's total GDP is 1000 and Pakistan's is 500. Now Pakistan's economy grows at 10 percent meaning 50 growth and GDP goes to 550, India's grows at 7.5 percent meaning 75 growth they have still grown more then Pakistan. Dont even bother to give me stock market figures what happened 3 months back was totall disgracefull people lost millions in a crash and SECP and government just sat their looking at it doing nothing. All SECP chairman could say "People want more money what can we do about it." heck you have to do something about it as you are the regulatory body.
