Will Pakistan ever be in a position to play the Super Series?

Australia have played the inaugral super series but somewhere down the line, will Pakistan ever become good enough to hold onto the number 1 spot long enough to host a Super Series?

It's not as crazy as it sounds, I think our ODI unit is close to being one of the top 2 sides in the world and with a lot more hard work we can clinch that number one spot. We are already being touted as one of the favourites for the 2007 World Cup and if we can improve our performance until then then maybe it may become a reality.

However its unlikely we would be hosting the Test World XI as our test unit has a long, long way to go before we can be counted amongst the top 4 let alone the number 1.

How long do you think it would take for Pakistan to turn themselves around in order to become a top test team or do you think we just dont have the temperament for that??

One must think big and plan to get there. Not sure if that's the strategy at the moment.

We could be the no. 1 odi team with just a bit more application.

As for a test team, well first we need to find two people who can play the new ball, then we'll worry about that...

I think Pakistan can definitely be the No.1 ODI team... As far as tests are concerned.... Nope. Not for a couple of years.

But, what's the use of doing something if you do not believe that you can be the very best at it...At the ultimate level of your sport...And for me, test cricket is the ultimate level.

I am sure that is the long term goal of all cricket players...

Anyhow...another question then, if you don't mind....

If, in three years time, Pakistan is the best ODI team in the world, and the West Indies the best test team (don't laugh, it ain't funny)... HOW WILL THE SUPER SERIES BE PLAYED? Do the 3 ODI's in Pakistan, and then shift the whole shebang to one of the Windie Islands to play the test there?

A logistical nightmare!!! To say the least...

What makes you think there's going to be another one? Most supporters worldwide think it's just a meaningless, unwanted addition to an already overcrowded fixture list.

Well all the talk from theose that matter has been of making it a regular fixture. Since when does it matter what the supporters think anyway?

True, unfortunately. I just hope that the dismal crowds for the one dayers might have made them think again. They reckoned there was 18,000 there for the first one. It looked like nearer 4,000 from the footage I saw!

Still, I genuinely hope that there's a decent turnout at the SCG for the 'Test', since I gather proceeds are going to the eathquake relief effort.

Pakistan are still playing catch up as far as the academies are concerned, levels of coaching in Pakistan and also the preparation of players in readiness for international cricket.

Whilst other countries opted to organise "A" tours to Australia, the West Indies, South Africa etc, we were sending our "A" team to places such as UAE and Kenya.

It seems that the days of someone turning up at the nets and becoming a superstar overnight are long gone. These days it appears that the foundations have to be in place to prepare players for the top level, that is get them through the academy set up with some proper coaching and then some "hard" cricket at "A" level in countries that will test their technical ability.

Until some of the above issues are addressed, we will remain also rans especially at test level.
