India formally allows foreign investment from Pakistan

NEW DELHI: The Indian government on Wednesday formally allowed foreign direct investment (FDI) from Pakistan, the latest in a series of confidence building measures to build trust between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
Pakistani citizens and companies will be allowed to invest in all sectors apart from defence, space and atomic energy, a government statement said.
The move to allow FDI from Pakistan had been announced by India’s trade minister earlier this year.
Both sides have implemented measures to improve trade and business ties, as they slowly rebuild relations that were shattered by the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
Under previous rules, Pakistanis could not directly invest in India. Investment flows are unlikely to surge after this initiative, but the move will go some way to addressing concerns by Pakistani businessmen that India places too many restrictions on them.

Does Pakistan allows Indian investments? is this move good or bad for the future of both countries? will this help in peace process?

I don't see how it could do any harm. Both countries share the same continent, why shouldn't they take advantage of proximity for trade and commerce?

Yes if they take advantage like south-east Asian it would be great for both countries but even after 70 years we are debating about the two-nation theory and religious differences/hatred to one another, can this be overcome? can any sort of trust be formed to take mutual advantage of each other?

It depends whether we have real leaders at the helm or petty children. In Britain there's still a lack of trust of French and Germans but that doesn't prevent trade which could be mutually beneficial. In fact we are taught French and German as a language specifically for that reason despite the fact that we are cracking jokes about Nazis and Frogs to this day.

@Cpt.Rishwat

I agree with you one cannot fly with just one wing, I can only hope our leaders have attained that kind of political maturity but to be honest fearing a imminent statement from Shiv Sena and the age-old game will start again.

Any Cricketer from India who has a potential to become PM of India like Imran Khan who is finally in position to challenge any big party in Pakistan? Cricket is Religion in India right?

"Cricket is Religion" is often used to show how important we consider our Cricket to be and should not be taken in literal sense. When it comes to realpolitik they are not often the ideal candidates.

At the moment no cricketer can become PM of India and rightly so because unlike Pakistan(which is in need of a leader who can unite) India needs a good management expert.

Very good move from India.

With no power, no gas, no oil, no energy in pakistan, pakistani businessmen will turn to India and invest there. Excellent move!

Doesn't matter. As soon as people's economic interest are dependent on each other people become allot more "accepting: and "considerate".
French don't get along with the British. French don't also get along with the Germans. Canadians don't get along with the Americans. But they become allot more civilized to each other as soon as they developed economic dependency to each other.

Few months back, when there was a Pakistani exhibition in New Delhi, Pakistani textiles were a huge hit among the Indians, and were sold out.

I believe that the biggest market for Pakistan is not China or any other country. It is right across the Eastern border.

economics, much like it did in post world war europe, will eventually bring peace to South Asia.

Agree completely with Shashi Tharoor's opinion on this matter:

Quote:
He adds, “Relations between the two countries have been improving now. The Pakistani government has reciprocated our offer of MFN (Most Favoured Nation) trade status, though the bill is yet to be passed in the Pakistani Parliament. I am cautiously optimistic that free trade between the two countries will ensure that economic interests become intertwined. This would, in the long run, ensure that the Pakistani businessman would lobby and make attempts to ensure that Pakistan and its intelligence agencies will abandon the anti-India stance and would work in the better interests of peace in the region.”
